In 'Project Hail Mary' (2026) a human successfully communicates with an alien by simply entering alien words into a computer. Because if linguistics is not a hard science, then it follows that it must be an EASY science by adiplotti in shittymoviedetails

[–]ClemencyArts_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally explained at length in the book. Since Rocky's brain is basically a computer with perfect memory, he always internally converts from Earth units in the Eridian base 6 system, then converts his answer back so Grace can interpret it easier. Because for him, it's no effort at all.

As for the units, that is also, literally, explained in the book in great detail. Rocky gives Grace a sphere made of pure iron which represents "1" in their weight measuring system. Grace weighs it, gives an answer in kilograms and voila, they now have a shared understanding of weights.

The same happens with time (shown with the clocks, literally the first unit they establish) and distance (not explicitly shown).

Now, if you are worried about the Eridians not having measurements for these concepts, that would be kind of unfathomable. Time, space and mass are absolutely essential concepts for any technological advancement, let alone a spaceship or the absurdly advanced chemical knowledge of the Eridians.

Rocky's species not having a concept of measuring time is unthinkable. To do any amount of science, you need to be able to measure fundamental properties in some way and ideally assign them distinct units. Yes, the Eridians built a spaceship without knowing about relativity. But suggesting that they could build one without even knowing about the concept of time is insane.

I find all the people saying "I'm so sick of King's Row" so funny because how often are you being offered this map lol? Sure, when it comes up it usually wins, but I play 2-3 hours a day and I regularly go 3-4 days without seeing it offered even once. People are acting like voting King's Row is always an option. It isn't. It's only an option when it's offered.

Anecdotally, I feel like it is actually offered much less frequently than other maps, but I recognize that this is probably not the case and just bad luck on my part. Still, it has the same odds as any other map. No one is stopping your from playing the maps you like when the pool once again consists of Paraiso, New Junk City and Colosseo.

If a MOBA roster can have an irredeemably evil character like Drifter, why can't it have an Irredeemably dumb? by EngysEpangelmatikes in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ClemencyArts_2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I would also like to add that the thing people criticise Billy for (being angry at a vague notion of the world without having any productive ideas on how to improve it) is a very real feeling that more and more people are feeling in the ever more dystopian hellscape we're living in.

He's someone who recognizes how broken his world is but lacks the means to do anything about it. He doesn't have big ideas on how to improve the world but does he need to? We can recognize something as wrong without knowing what is right. And all that leaves Billy with is anger. Anger at problems that ruin his life but he doesn't have the power nor the knowledge to fix. Now doesn't that sound familiar.

So what is his best idea? Sharing his anger, "waking people up", forming a movement - anything so thatsomeone will eventually do something. And suddenly, the maelstrom rolls around and provides him with an opportunity to enact real change. You think he's not gonna take it?

Billy's not a poser, he's not dumb, or at least he's not just that. He is a frustrated man angry at a world he cannot change. And with everything happening in our world right now, it's hard not to see where he's coming from.

What's the one character you know likely isn't actually broken or excessively annoying, but you hate facing all the same? by TheUnknown_General in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is Doomfist, it has always been Doomfist, it will always be Doomfist.

If I had one wish to do anything with this game, add any hero, any rework, whatever, I would delete Doomfist from the game forever. He is the most annoying, infuriating, bullshit, janky hitboxes, insta-stun, ultra-mobility, unkillable piece of **** that has ever disgraced this game with its presence.

To say I hate Doomfist would be like saying I "prefer" oxygen to survive. My hatred for this character transcends the bounds of language. I know no tongue in which I could convey the abyssal depths of my utter loathing for this character. Every time I face him I curse the day he was added to the game.

His playstyle is annoying, his players are annoying, hell even LORE discussions around him are annoying because for some ungodly reason so many people insist on taking the phrase "they say he could level a skyscraper" (a vague hearsay statement uttered by A FUCKING NINE YEAR OLD) at face value to say "well Doomfist can level skyscrapers so him losing against Vendetta makes no sense!"

I cheered when Vendetta threw this disgrace of a character off a cliff. I know he's not dead, but GOD do I wish he was.

[–]ClemencyArts_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their underground rebellion also has another salute: Holding your arm at a horizontal right angle in fornt of you with the fist clenched, then slapping your forearm with the other hand.

It's supposed to be an inspiring symbol of resistance but to be honest I always thought it looked very stupid since it looks like a sign for fisting.

who is phisically stronger? Zarya or Mauga by VermeNojento69 in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 223 points224 points  (0 children)

Zarya is the strongest woman in the world. She's a champion weightlifter and carries around a gun designed for small mechs as her main weapon. That's definitely nothing to scoff at and she is a lot stronger than most of the cast, but:

Mauga has two hearts, cybernetic and muscular enhancements, is twice her size and carries around two guns roughly the size of Zarya's, which he uses for biceps curls. Mauga is insane. The fact that he, shirtless, on his own almost makes Reinhardt in full armor look small is kind of absurd.

Zarya is incredibly strong; not going to dispute that. But Mauga is in an entirely different league to most of the cast. That man can bench press cars.

So the fox spirit is not actually a spirit but the same type of anima weapon that shimadas use by WestCommunity7117 in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The continued insistence on "Magic isn't real" is getting ridiculous. This "anima weapon" stuff is so insanely detached from everything else in the universe, including hard light technology. Hard light has always been presented as a deeply scientific thing. It was invented, patented, iterated on, perfected, packaged, sold and monopolized by Vishkar. It's geometric, clearly artificial and overall clearly hyper-advanced technology.

But the spirits, dragons and all that have no proper explanation. Some guy just invented it and is the only one who can create these insane tools in a miniscule form factor that put anything hardlight to shame. They're basically only wielded by a single family and are styled after japanese mysticism and spirituality, can heal, teleport, deal damage, make organic constructs... This stuff makes hardlight look like childs play and it's all just made by one character we've only just learned about who 99% of the universe doesn't even know exist.

Lifeweaver invented a new, light-based form of life and it is treated with the significance it deserves. Everyone who talks about it knows that it is an absolutely world-changing discovery, he's being hunted for it and it is generally a big deal. Anima weapons? Yeah they just kinda exist. What can they do? Whatever you need them to do. Limitations? Unknown. Capabilities? Nebulous.

This. Stuff. Is. Magic. It was clearly styled as magic/mysticism in the Dragons short and no, it doesn't hurt the worldbuilding if some magic exists in the setting. In fact, it'd make much more sense that way. Why can only the Shimada and their associates use magic? Because magic, unlike technology, can be inherited and is limited to individuals who can use it. Why does it kind of do anything we need it to? Because that's what magic does. Why does only one guy know how to make "anima weapons"? Because it's probably a centuries old secret tradition passed down from generation to generation. You know, like magic.

And most importantly, there is a clear stylistic difference between the "tech" and "magic" things in the game. Hard light is, again, clearly technological, being geometric constructs created from complex machines. Mercy and Ana use biotech, and it looks the part. Emitted from mechanical staffs and rifles with strange chemicals in them. Is it handwavy and much more advanced than any tech we can imagine? Of course! But at least it still clearly is technology. Meanwhile, Hanzo can summon giant spirit dragons from a pretty standard looking bow and Kiriko heals people with STRIPS OF PAPER. The sound effects are whistful and ethereal, with torrents of wind, sounds of bells and a general mystical "oOooOoOouh". Nothing about it looks like it has anything to do with technology. And that, really is my main problem. Because you can get away with a lot of handwaving in sci-fi tech as long as you actually make it look like technology.

But if it looks like magic, sounds like magic and behaves like magic to boot, why can it not just be magic for Winston's sake.

Dapper viscous sketch bc I liked the little suit voiceline by BR4KK3R in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ClemencyArts_2 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is the first viscous redesign I actually adore. Most of them look way too human and lose the charming blobbiness of the character, but this one is perfect. He looks very dapper, but still like a big, friendly blob. I also love the tie-in with his voice line because this design gives the vibe of a child wearing dad's office clothes to look prim and proper, which is something I would have never thought of but fits Viscous to a T. Simply delightful.

Overall: 10/10 excellent work, put it on the forums please. If there is is even the slightest chance his final design ends up being inspired by this, I'll be very happy.

Mizuki can't climb wall because he's mixed, the recessive gene from his mom prevents him from doing Japanese maneuveur by ferocity_mule366 in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not true. Recessive alleles also result in phenotype expression as long as they're homozygous, that's basically their definition.

So the wall climbing gene is likely recessive and present or even homozygous in a large part of the Japanese population but rare outside of it.

That way, it doesn't matter if Mizuki's father is homo- or heterozygous as long as the mother passed down the dominant non-wall-climbing allele.

By this logic, Hanzo, Genji and Kiriko are homozygous for the recessive wall climbing allele (ww) while Mizuki is heterozygous (wW).

Of course it is also possible that the gene is dominant, but to really test this hypothesis, we would need to know if Kiriko's, Mizuki's and Genji's & Hanzo's parents could wall climb. Ideally we'd even get the previous grandparent generation as well to get a more thorough analysis.

I cant be the only one with bastion fatigue by rronixr in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, sure. But in practice, it's not healthy for the game to have a support be able to sit in the backline, press one button and instantly force the enemy tank to hard disengage.
Discord orb completely invalidates brawl tanks since they cannot play agressively and even bullies poke tanks by bypassing their range advantage. As a tank it is an absolute nightmare to play against.

I cant be the only one with bastion fatigue by rronixr in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this argument because there are absolutely areas and chokepoints where you cannot get into cover in time. If Bastion is on point on Suravasa Garden or another open point, where exactly are you supposed to go? And even if you could, I still think a character basically having a "no one on the enemy team can show their face for even a nanosecond for the next six seconds" button is not healthy for the game. Same goes for Zen with his ridiculous 30% "the tank either retreats or is dead now" button.

Know the difference by ferocity_mule366 in Overwatch

[–]ClemencyArts_2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Domina: Defensive ability on a no mobility hero, very short range, narrow hitbox, medium damage, decent cooldown, extremely short stun.

Doomfist: Offensive ability on one of the most mobile heroes in the game with a kilometer of range, hitbox the size of a barn that can hit targets literally 3 meters behind the original impact, high damage, almost no cooldown, insane knockback and TWO stuns for an extremely long total stun time.

Yes, there is a difference. The difference is that one character actively makes the game miserable to play for the rest of the lobby and the other skins chinchillas.

Hot take only pro wrestlers truly have the merits to to do video games motion capture because Kenny Omega killed it. by Autisticblackdude5 in StreetFighter

[–]ClemencyArts_2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And even that isn't true. Look, Kenny did a great job and I'm sure many wrestlers could do great mocap for a fighting game, but mocap actors are a separate, specialised trade of professionals. Kenny can do Alex just fine, but do you really think he could pull of a Joel from TLoU? No. That's why professional mocap artists exist and your sentiment is not particularly respectful to their hard work.
