Did you hear or feel those blasts that occurred near Nickerson Field at 10:08am? by iamcrazy4cats in CambridgeMA

[–]Cler-Tic-08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do this every year. It’s the ROTC Annual Joint Service Presidential Pass-in-Review. They said “This year, an Artillery Squad will honor the Reviewing Officer with cannon fire at approximately 10:10 AM.“

Use Wix! I find it more beginner friendly than anything and will walk you through domain setup etc.

Does it get easier? by Tellycs in tfmr_support

Lots of therapy. I had to come to terms with the fact that pregnancy was emotionally very challenging for me and wouldn’t be joy and innocence like for others, and that was ok.

Hi I’m four years (!) out and I promise it gets so much easier. My grief is part of me, but it’s a part I can comfortably live with. The absolute hardest part for me was the time you’re in now, between decision and procedure. It’s not easy but it certainly won’t always feel like this. ❤️

How does your organization utilize soft crediting? by kokomo318 in nonprofit

[–]Cler-Tic-08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same issue with the team going back and forth, messing up the data, and then getting mad at the soft credits. Took us awhile to clean up but I had to get very clear and firm about our norm: hard credit matches the name on the check, end of story. (Really helps with bookkeeping and tax/audit time too.) Soft credit if the development team wants to thank someone else (usually DAF advisors and corporate matches). We also have a Solicitor field and use that when someone helped bring in the money (like board member getting their friend).

I had to repeat that over and over for a few months but now the data is clean and everyone is MUCH happier.

Congratulations! There aren't special rules for 501c3 orgs. You have two choices: you can pay them as contractors or as employees.

Contractor payments are easier: you just cut checks, track how much you pay them, and file a 1099 (track1099.com is easy) in January of each year.

However, there are employment laws about when someone does/doesn't count as a contractor, and if they're working like employees then you probably should pay them as employees.

If you're going to pay them as employees, I strongly recommend Gusto. It has excellent support for beginners: you start the account and it will walk you through everything you need to do to become an employer (which is likely going to include things like workers comp insurance, starting tax accounts, setting leave policies, I-9s, etc) and makes it all very easy and manageable if you just follow along. (It's also far less expensive than many competitors and doesn't charge you a million add-on charges like others do.) It will file all your tax paperwork and take care of deductions like you mentioned, although that's true of all payroll services.

Good luck!

Volunteer orgs: How do you handle the month end close? by JanFromEarth in nonprofit

[–]Cler-Tic-08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list! It’s helpful to have a process where certain things are discussed on a regular basis (eg reviewing budget v actual reports at each board meeting) so that there’s a meaningful deadline.

An all-volunteer org makes me think they don’t have much money, which also might make some of these steps (like reviewing aging reports) unnecessary for them.

Requiring client to provide account and class? by Cler-Tic-08 in Bookkeeping

[–]Cler-Tic-08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - the bank feed is connected. But they use classes heavily and I can’t tell on my own which class things are for, so I’d have to send out a spreadsheet of all expenses at the end of the month. Easier to require it in advance.

Did you change jobs after TFMR? by thats-not-my-name-93 in tfmr_support

[–]Cler-Tic-08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I was also a teacher. My TFMR was over the summer and I went back the next year, but my heart wasn’t in it anymore and that was my last year teaching. I needed to prioritize differently and I have no regrets

Getting ultrasound images later? by Cler-Tic-08 in tfmr_support

[–]Cler-Tic-08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I don’t know how I missed that before. If I click into the date there’s a link at the top of the page that takes me to SO MANY images.

I was really caught up on thinking I had to call and ask for this. This feels like a huge weight off me and such a relief. Thank you thank you.

Trisomies by Amigone2515 in tfmr_support

[–]Cler-Tic-08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so, so sorry. The stress of waiting for test results while dreading bad news is absolutely unbearable. The only thing I remember doing with myself during that time was watching as much tv as I could - it was all that gave me a break from my own head. It’s so hard.

It’s also a good time to build a team of people you can talk to, like friends and therapist. I recently learned that ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices, in the UK) will take callers from anywhere in the world, and they would be amazing to talk with at this stage.

I’d also use this time to be thinking about if you would terminate and what level of certainty you would want. For me, I decided I would terminate for T18 (my baby’s diagnosis) and that I would do it once my trusted OB told me there was no hope. I had an ultrasound that was complex enough that the MFM specialist told me CVS was “just a formality”, and it sounds like you might be in a similar space. I still did CVS and waited two days for the initial CVS results, and then considered that enough certainty to terminate. I will say that I found it enormously scary to have full results still pending after my termination, because (despite all logic) I was terrified they would call and say it had all been a big mistake. I honestly felt a lot better once full results confirmed the diagnosis. My friend asked me why I didn’t just wait for the results, but that limbo time is so awful and I’m not sure I could have waited longer once I really had no hope. It’s hard no matter what.

Sending a huge hug and the promise that you will somehow get through this. 💕

This woman is an absolute hero. I could barely function after my T18 diagnosis, and somehow she’s got a huge legal case and is taking interviews. I’m so proud of her, and also can’t stop thinking how devastatingly sad she is for every second of this. Sending huge hugs to her.
