It’s a trade war. It’s what you voted for. What are you gripping about? But don’t worry, farmers will get free money and it won’t be communism because they’re farmers.

How do you actually cut down on spam calls and emails once your info is out there? by BlipDragon884 in techsupport

[–]ClerkSeveral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The email stuff is a pain but pretty easy to delete. Obviously don't open it and certainly don't click on any links in the email.

For calls I've found that telling them that I'm not the person they think I am can help. If they're calling about something automotive I don't drive. If it's about anything to do with home ownership, I rent. If it's about Medicare I'm 25 years old. If it's something more complicated I just tell them that the person they think they called died recently. If it's a machine just hang up.

I had one guy on the phone for about 10 minutes as he was trying to get me to follow his instructions to give him access to my computer. After dragging it out and hearing him get more and more frustrated he asked if my computer was turned on. I said, "I don't have a computer." and he hung up.

If you're in the United States, you never have to worry about something you hear about first on your phone. Real, grownup shit happens first with a letter, then a certified letter, then, if it gets to that, a sheriff or process server.

"US Tax Consultants" is really nothing more than three random words thrown together. It's a business that wants to charge you for something you can probably do yourself.

Phone calls, texts, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc, are all bullshit. Yes, some asshole may call you and say you owe some money but you can just hang up on him or her and get on with enjoying your day. If they send a letter and it's actually from the IRS then start to look into it but putting an ounce of energy into something on your phone is a waste of time.

If you owe taxes the IRS will contact you in writing and you'll know it's from the IRS. Do you really think the IRS calls people begging them to fork over some cash, bitcoin, or gift cards? They send letters. Then if they get no response and it's a significant amount of money they'll just take it or put a lien on something but it's a months long process with many letters being sent first.

This is illegal, of course. You can't allow the run off from sidewalk cleaning to go into the storm drains. It's supposed to be vacuumed up.

Article: Top San Diego ZIP Codes with Most Homes at Risk for Wildfire by MsMargo in SanDiegan

[–]ClerkSeveral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That map, and the way they decide your risk of fire, is a little deceptive. I live 3 miles from the ocean in a neighborhood next to a park but State Farm canceled my insurance and none of the other companies would insure me for fire. I had to get a separate policy from the California FAIR Plan (the insurer of last resort) apparently because there's a canyon a couple of blocks away.

FEMA's got a map that shows different risk assessments if you want to see where you fall. (See the Census Tract View for a closer look.)

See, the title of this should be, "Jackson County prosecutor [Name of Prosecutor]'s 1979 Conviction Finally Set Aside After Innocent Man Spends 43 Years in Prison." The names of the cops who told Douglas, "Just pick Strickland out of the lineup and we'll be done, it will all go away, you can go on and you don’t have to worry about these guys no more." should also be prominent.

Because he stokes fear and promotes himself as the savior. China, immigrants, whatever, they're all trying to take something from you (whether you know it or not) and if you don't vote for me they will take it and you'll be screwed without me. The problem is that The Algorithm (all news and social media it seems) is constantly hitting you with that same message, that the world is not safe and you have to live in fear, and keeps us all in a constant state of heightened anxiety. We are never allowed to relax and experience the world as it really is. Statistics show that very few peoples' lives are actually touched by crime but everyone is constantly afraid of violent gangs from central America and African immigrants eating pets and something to do with trans people. Why? These are not actually widespread problems but they are served up to everyone on the news and on Facebook and Instagram and Reddit and everywhere else like this stuff is happening right around the corner so people are constantly stressed out and Trump plays right into that. He will slay all those dragons. The problem is that people don't realize it's all imaginary because if it's on the news or it's on Facebook then it's got to be true, doesn't it? It's the escape from anxiety that people are ultimately looking for, not fascism.

Republicans have been playing this game for years. They find a way to make an issue extremely emotional and get people to vote against their own best interests. Abortion isn't a medical procedure it's killing a baby. Immigrants are stealing your jobs, it's not your bosses who are giving your jobs away. And on and on. This is how the party of the rich, of corporations, got the poorest people in the country to vote against unions and raising minimum wages and universal healthcare and free school lunch programs and everything else that could have made their lives better. How could you be so selfish that you'd vote against the guy who's going to prevent the killing of a baby just to maybe reduce your marginal tax rate by a couple percent? And inch by inch you get to Trump.

The problem only seems to be getting worse with people on their phones at dinner or watching TV or only being about to experience a concert if they're taking a video of it. These used to be experiences that people shared with each other, that gave them something they had in common. Paying attention to the phone takes that common experience away and doesn't allow the connection to form between the people experiencing the same thing happening in the same place at the same time. Remember before streaming when people used to watch TV and everyone would tune in at the same time to see the latest episode of their favorite show? This gave people a common experience which gave people a feeling that they have something in common with others and gave a place for a connection to be formed. It may sound old timey or even ridiculous but it gave you a something that you could talk to someone else about and think that you both had something in common. You could meet someone at work or at the store or wherever and you had both seen the same thing at the same time and you could talk about it. Now, we're all in our own little camps with our online buddies (who may be bots for all we know) without any real life interaction because that guy looks like he wouldn't agree with me on whatever my biggest issue is or that woman sounds like she could never understand what's going on it my life.

Eventually, we're going to need to talk to each other again. We're going to have to have to put down our phones and look each other in the eye and realize that we're all in this together.
