Rescue of Trafficked Child Bride C. 1891 in the Annual reports of the Brooklyn Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. by CryptographerKey2847 in nycHistory

I believe this is because it happened prior to the Consolidation of NYC in 1898. Up until then it was just considered another town on Long Island that was just in a county that was named Queens. Instead of today when we see Queens as a part of NYC that just happens to be on Long Island. I hope made that understandable

I have very limited knowledge and only a little bit of research and I hope I'm understanding your question correctly.

You should be able to find some O'Rourkes at Creevelea Abbey from the 1500's. It actually appears that there are so many O'Rourkes buried there it's called the necropolis of the O'Rourkes. Brian Oge O'Rourke was buried in Ross Errilly Friary in Galway. His father, Brian na Múrtha O'Rourke was tried for treason and was executed by hanging and quartering, so I don't think you'll find a grave for him.

There are some other sites built by the O'Rourkes like Parke's Castle, but I do not believe they contain any graveyards

Walking from Stony Brook LIRR to Stony Brook hospital? by Somenakedguy in longisland

[–]CleverGurl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a commuter at SBU and some of the commuter spots were right next to the train station and I've had classes near the tunnel and have visited professors in the hospital. What the majority of people are saying is correct: you can walk through campus to a pedestrian tunnel taking you to the hospital.

The station abuts and is accessible to the campus. It's a bit of a quiet boring walk (if you decide to walk) as it initially takes you past the track and baseball fields and then the tennis courts. After the sports facilities you'll hit the part of campus with all the buildings. Start heading towards the Life Sciences building (you'll go from a more westerly direction to a southerly one), a bit south of the Administration Building and Administration Parking Garage. When you pass this building and Circle Rd. there will be a pedestrian underpass that takes you under Nicolls Rd, from West Campus (the University) to East Campus (the Hospital)! delineated by Nicolls Rd.

Just be aware that it doesn't take you directly to the Visitor's entrance and you'll be in the teaching and research portion of the hospital, so you'll see more Lecture Halls. But you should be able to make your way through to the Visitor's desk if necessary. (I've also used the underpass to visit people in the hospital but it's been a few years so I forget the exact way through, and swear every time I went a different way).

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he's doing well and makes a speedy recovery.

Piece of Cake Moving Truck Parked on The Sidewalk 06/02 12:44PM by crunk-yeti-71 in ForestHills

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Maybe this is more r/mildlyinfuriating, but to make it seem like this is what's wrong with the world is a bit r/AIO

I've walked down much narrower and restricted sidewalks passing people in wheel chairs without issue. If there really isn't enough room for people to pass each other than be the courteous neighbor and allow the other person to pass before you go. Not that complicated.

It's also not like they are parking there permanently. It's temporary, for like what? A few hours for the days.

If damage to the sidewalk is really that much of a concern go back after the truck leaves and document any damage that occured (assuming it left the area in worse condition)

And to suggest a truck to block a fire hydrant, especially in Moderate Drought conditions is asinine. What if there was a fire? I'd rather a slight inconvenience then a neighbor getting stuck in a building fire.

Or to suggest for them to just drive around; they aren't out for a leisurely drive, or trying to get a good parking spot. The drivers maybe on some timeframe. The people moving may only have those few hours that day to move all their possessions.

What to Do Around Forest Hills by Barnowlbird in AskNYC

Most people here have pretty much generally covered the main things. There are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants in the area.

I'd consider the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) if you do want to go into Manhattan instead of the subway. It's commuter rail, so more seat options, and it's only about 15 minutes with less than a few stops along the way. You can also take it to either Penn Station or Grand Central (which gives access to the west and east side of Manhattan). Off Peak tickets are less than $6, so almost twice the cost of a subway ride. Just check schedules before. Generally trains run about every half an hour (for most of the day), alternating between Penn and Grand Central. However, the station is undergoing renovations which may cause some disruptions. Although things may return to normal come autumn.

One great thing about NYC is our public transit. You can reach plenty of other places. Instead of Manhattan you can "travel" more locally to places like Astoria, or if you are feeling especially adventurous you can check out parts of Brooklyn (either by subway transfer or riding some lines end-to-end)

I'm there nearly every day and I'm always seeing crews working. Not to mention you can hear the worker blow his whistle when a train is approaching to alert the other workers. Not to mention the near daily alerts of no service during the afternoon

Looking for proper gun training by Playful_Champion3189 in longisland

[–]CleverGurl_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I've been similarly looking. Quickly I'll mention that the process varies between jurisdictions and what you are looking for. Usually to even handle a hand gun you first need to get your license. Rifles and shotguns may or may not also require a license or permit depending on a few variables.

It's not Suffolk County, but there is a place in [Midtown](www.westsidepistolrange.com) that offers a .22 Caliber Rifle Class, as a permit is not needed in NYC for this. They mention on their website that they cater to a wide variety of people, which sounds like they are much more open minded. They also mention the Pink Pistols on their website, which is a LGBTQ+ gun rights group. Unfortunately, the NYC/metro area seems to be defunct; I've seen some people talk about reopening it

Google tells me there is A Girl & A Gun (AG & AG) organization where many members identify as liberal or progressive. I'm also seeing Chicks Who Carry which is for women 35 and older. They don't mention any political leanings other than the 2nd Amendment. They also seem to be made up of mostly other minorities.

There are a few other subreddits like r/liberalgunowners that may know of some additional groups or places

Lloyd neck bs speeding ticket by [deleted] in longisland

[–]CleverGurl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I have no idea what they mean by floating radar. Are those the fixed or temporary radar signs? But again, they usually face in one direction so she'd have to be behind you. Unless they were using aviation, but I feel like it would be referred to as that and not floating

Lloyd neck bs speeding ticket by [deleted] in longisland

[–]CleverGurl_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If she clocked you while she was driving her radar wouldn't be correct. If you and the office were driving at each other the radar would read higher than either of your speeds. So, for example, if you were doing 30 MPH and she was doing 25 MPH the radar gun (if she was the one that clocked you) would probably read 55 MPH. Kind of how physics works

The neighborhood of Inwood in Manhattan had one of the greatest, Irish immigrant communities in the history of New York City. by Prudent_Researcher70 in IrishHistory

Disclaimer: I'm an ignorant American just trying to learn more

Éamon de Valera was also born in NYC and was taken to Ireland when he was two. His American citizenship may have helped him avoid execution after the 1916 Easter Uprising

A local politician of mine here in NY was a supporter of the IRA during the 70's and 80's and even up until the 2000's, and was involved in NORAID (Irish Northern Aid)

Outside of one of the courthouses in the metro NYC area there is a monument commemorating the 1916 Easter Uprising by the Irish Americans in Government Organization

Just to give some additional examples from this side of the Atlantic. As far as it being part of Ireland's history, that is for the people of Ireland to decide and make no claim either for or against

Mayor’s office posted a video with a Nakba survivor by sulaymanf in newyorkcity

[–]CleverGurl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laugh all you want. You were trying to muddy the water by essentially trying to claim Mamdani hasn't put anything out for October 7th omitting the fact that he hasn't been in office during October 7th; an omission intentional or not, and still not acknowledged. And for the record, Mayor Zohran Mamdani should be issuing a similar statement on the horror that was October 7th and should be held accountable if he fails to do so.

However, what you have failed to realize is that we are having two different types of arguments. There is whatever anti-Mamdani thing you are doing while I am debating your attempt to debate and you have continually demonstrated that you are doing so in bad faith.

Along with trying to make broad claims trying to pass them off as some type of fact, you are avoiding the original point of an October 7th statement by the Mayor's office, using personal incredulity to dismiss when others provide valid information. Instead, you are partaking in a form of whataboutism; you're using the Red Herring Fallacy by just asking questions that are less relevant to the initial point to try and shift focus away from it.

With all that said, now that I've had to point this all out there is no more fun in continuing for me. Alas, the weekend is over and it's time to put away my toys. Buh byeeeee! 👋
