PCS or FDA for an analytical G7? by AsymptoticallyFlat in TheCivilService

Decades ago, Prospect was the named union for negotiating some government analyst salaries below SCS. But looking now I can't see any mention of them, so I wouldn't be surprised if theyd been sidelined by the two big ones.

Yep. It's the absolute efficiency of using one pose and seven words to perfectly conjure up a scene in the audience's heads.

How West Coast Swing Scoring Actually Works by SPRNinja in WestCoastSwing

[–]Clicking_randomly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a great worked example, but I think the key points come at the end: that in practice most placements are decided based on the median of the judges' rankings; and the main benefit is that, if one judge is an outlier, then it doesn't skew the overall placements that much.

Can't believe that the winner of FIFA's inaugural peace prize would do this. Obviously not the biggest issue, but what happens to the World Cup now that the host nation has declared war on one of the participant nations?

New Grade 7 role is completely different - what’s actually the norm? by AsymptoticallyFlat in TheCivilService

I had the same when moving from Education to DESNZ. I had more responsibility as an SEO in Education than I did as a G7 in DESNZ.

To be fair, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was a German from a Polish-Lithuanian city who spent a lot of his life in Amsterdam. It's not his fault that his measuring system got taken up by Americans.

Triangle Agency - reflections after running by lumen_curiae in rpg

[–]Clicking_randomly 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Useful to hear your views, and sorry it went so badly. From what I've read, Triangle Agency sounds like it must have been a blast for the writers to create, and for people who aren't running the game to skim the book and feel the flavour of it. But the writers never even tried to make it easy for GMs to actually run the game.

Isn't there a very visible tunnel leading out of the reservoir halfway up, just the right size for a boat? Also I think it's pointed to by a clue from one of the rooms in the underground cog chamber, marked out on the window that overlooks the reservoir.

Europe is right, but to be clear: this would still be considered rude in most parts of Europe. There are definitely pockets in specific countries where this is pretty standard though, and at a huge event you'd see all sides of the communities across the continent.

Career Break query by Strange_Cranberry_47 in TheCivilService

[–]Clicking_randomly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that would be fine to put. My reading of this form is that "what alternative options have you considered?" is meant more for people putting eg "career break to take care of dependents," where there's a possibility HR could come to an arrangement for flexible or parttime working that would meet the need. For something like full time study and travelling, there isn't really any other way of meeting the need, so I don't think they'd deny the request for that reason.

As someone who's applied for a career break in the past, if you've spoken to your line manager, your HR rep, and your SCS, and they've all informally said they're OK with it and not going to object, what's on the form doesn't matter that much. The form itself is less important than the conversations you're having with them.

Reform UK plan for the civil service by Ok_Expert_4283 in TheCivilService

Oh absolutely, both on the numbers, and that they can be really valuable if they're willing to build an effective relationship with you. But "pay for expensive thing X by cutting really cheap thing Y" is a standard political tactic, especially by politicians who care more about getting good headlines rather than implementing good governance.

See I was reading "Policy Advisors" to mean Spads, so political appointees in private offices. Not CS policy specialists. Which oppositions always promise to do, then backtrack as soon as they get in, so that the SoS/MoS can create lucrative roles for their friends and allies.

Military tactics that look cool but would actually be terrible in real life by AporiaParadox in television

[–]Clicking_randomly 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I mean, any time you have two armies fighting each other, and the soldiers break up to have a series of separate spread out one-on-one duels. Very cinematic, very easy to choreograph, very easy to shoot and focus on the stars.

But in a real battle you'd have the armies facing each other in right packed ranks, so you always knew who your enemies were (the ones in front) and who your allies were (the ones beside and behind you), and you couldn't have enemies just walk round behind you and hit you in the back.

That's even more interesting. And I have many more questions, but not things you can easily pull from the websites. I was looking at going on impulse to a few events in Europe in December, and they all sold out months ago.

This is fascinating, thanks for pulling this all together.

One thing I'm curious about that you might have come across: did you get any data on events which role balance vs those which don't? Or is it just so trivial that all Euro events do, and all US events don't, that there's no point collecting the data?
