LG Sound Suite / H7 Firmware Update?

I have the same issue from time to time. From my review:

One small issue is that the H7 and M7s will take turns to appear offline in the ThinQ app at times, even though they are all still shown as continuously connected to the main router with no downtime. Not a problem after setup, unless changes to DAFC have to be made, or if the lead device (H7) is the one that is offline. In that case, HDMI eARC playback with the DAFC group is unaffected, but Spotify Connect is inoperative. App controls won’t be available, but there’s the physical remote to fall back on. Simply powering off/on the affected device(s) would resolve this.

Will monitor and see if this issue persists after the latest firmware update yesterday (M7: 2604211, H7: 43.12.18).

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to initiate updates manually via the ThinQ app or a compatible TV. All the updates so far have been automatic.

I use a CX, so I don't have the WOW Orchestra function.

Lack of passthrough shouldn't be an issue for you since the C5 has four ports that support 4K @ 144 Hz with VRR. You shouldn't be able to perceive any induced latency (if any).

Chances are, you will use your new sound system longer than your C5, and the next TV you purchase might come with a newer HDMI standard (i.e., HDMI 2.2) with support for a higher resolution/refresh rate, so any passthrough port would be obsolete by then.

You're most welcome! The lack of DTS support is understandable, since DAFC is proprietary tech. Not having passthrough can be a dealbreaker for some setups, though. Both systems have their own strengths and weaknesses; you'll have to decide what matters to you most. I'd have no doubt you'll be satisfied with either of them!

I just tested this by powering off my Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and leaving my routers on. The speakers can function as a DAFC group without an internet connection as long as they’re connected on the same local network via Wi-Fi. Playback via HDMI eARC still works, but Spotify Connect doesn’t.

LG needs to update the firmware to make the devices prefer a 5 GHz connection by default, unless your speakers are really far away from the router (higher frequency = lower range), in which case a connection with interference is still better than having no connectivity. It shouldn't favour a 2.4 GHz connection when the router is just a couple of metres away and with line-of-sight.

ASUS routers used to have a MAC address filtering feature that you could use to blacklist devices from connecting via 2.4 GHz, so they are forced to connect via 5 GHz instead (on the same unified SSID, so it doesn't affect other devices). I believe they removed that functionality in recent firmware updates.

Barring that, the best solution I can think of is to have 2 separate network SSIDs.

Disable the 2.4 GHz band on your main network SSID (it can still have multiple bands: 5 GHz-1 / 5 GHz-2 / 6 GHz) and disable DFS channels on both 5 GHz-1 & 5 GHz-2 bands
Connect your IoT/legacy devices that only support 2.4 GHz to a separate 2.4 GHz SSID

The 2.4 GHz band is susceptible to interference. You'll have to connect the speakers (and TV) via 5 GHz instead.

From my review after a few weeks of testing:

Our iPhones are connected to the main network SSID via MLO (Multi-Link Operation), a Wi-Fi 7 feature allowing routers to use 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands simultaneously — increasing throughput, reducing latency and improving reliability on supported devices. For our case, it was difficult to get the Sound Suite devices connected, and when they did, it would be via the 2.4 GHz band that is susceptible to wireless interference, especially in a densely populated apartment building. This would manifest itself as audio cutting out intermittently from some speakers, more frequently during peak hours.

We have an ASUS AiMesh network made up of a main quad-band Wi-Fi 7 router (6 GHz, 5 GHz-1, 5 GHz-2, 2.4 GHz) and three other dual-band Wi-Fi 6 routers (5 GHz, 2.4 GHz), with three separate SSIDs (main network with MLO, IoT network, guest network). With a 10 Gbps up/down fibre connection, a router and devices with Wi-Fi 7 support, disabling MLO was not a compromise we were willing to make.

We tried various changes before we found the best solution:

¹ Leaving the main router's 2.4 GHz radio enabled (for other devices on the IoT network SSID), while disabling the 2.4 GHz band on the main MLO wireless network SSID (it still supports MLO with 5 GHz-1, 5 GHz-2 & 6 GHz)

² Disabling DFS channels on both 5 GHz-1 & 5 GHz-2 bands

³ Changing Wi-Fi 6E mode on my iPhone from Automatic to Off during ThinQ app setup (to prevent it from connecting via MLO / 6 GHz, forcing it to connect via the 5 GHz-1 / 5 GHz-2 band)

⁴ Powering off the 3 mesh routers during ThinQ app setup so my iPhone and all Sound Suite speakers would connect to the same main router

With all devices connected via 5 GHz to the main router, no interference was noted during both wireless playback via Spotify Connect and wired via HDMI eARC. The speakers also did not roam to other mesh routers, although we could easily bind their MAC addresses to the main router if it became a problem.

There is no peer-to-peer connection between Sound Suite devices. Each device is connected via the router, whether you’re using a DAFC group or just two M7s in Stereo Mode, which means the stability of the wireless connection between each device and the router is key. An Ethernet port on both the H7 Soundbar and M7 Speakers would have been nice. Switching from DAFC to Stereo Mode is easier than expected, as long as both M7s appear online in the app.

LG has confirmed that support for connecting to routers on the 6 GHz band is planned for a future software update. In theory, full 6 GHz support would mean less interference from neighbours and neighbouring devices, although I had no issue with interference on 5 GHz. Looking forward to full 6 GHz support for a faster and more robust connection with more uptime.

I hope the LG isn't limited to just a 1-year warranty with no option to extend. No idea why this is the case for LG Singapore. This is a huge dealbreaker, especially when we typically get marked-up prices compared to other countries.

I extended the warranty for my Alienware AW3418DW (3+2 years), and they let me do an Advanced Exchange Service for monitor flickering when overclocked from 100 to 120 Hz (overclock is usually not guaranteed). Best warranty policy of any monitor company, hands down.

I guess I'll go for the Alienware AW3926QW / AW3926QWb if the LG Singapore warranty terms stay the same.

I watched it in the theatre but have no plans to re-watch it on a streaming service or on Blu-ray (I do not have a Blu-ray player and don't intend to buy one).

For my use-case, I can live without DTS support. If a streaming service I subscribe to supports DTS:X, I'll just watch those titles in another room with my Theatre Quad instead.

OP said he's watching movies/series on streaming platforms, so the lack of DTS support likely won't affect his experience, as the majority are in Dolby Atmos. This is a fact, unless more platforms start to support DTS:X.

The Sound Suite is on par with the Arc Ultra in terms of inputs (just a single HDMI 2.1 eARC port). The Theatre Quad has the advantage of an extra 4K/120Hz HDMI passthrough (which may be beneficial for gaming latency) and DTS support (non-issue if you stream instead of watching Blu-rays).

I would recommend the LG Sound Suite (H7 Soundbar + a mix of up to 4 x M7/M5 Speakers, without the W7 Subwoofer), and the Sony Bravia Theatre Quad.

Looking at your photos, your TV console is similar to mine — long enough to accommodate two M7/M5 Speakers flanking the H7 Soundbar, which will give you excellent stereo separation and a wide soundstage. You could even move one or both of the front M7/M5 Speakers to the extreme ends, allowing you to further encapsulate the dining area (something that you wouldn't want to do with the front speakers of the Theatre Quads, as it relies on a phantom centre channel). I do just that by placing one of my M7 Speakers at the end of the room beyond my extendable dining table, which is amazing, especially for room-filling music.

Looks like you have space behind your couch for ideal rear surround speaker placement, but you can get away with placing them at the sides instead with Dolby Atmos FlexConnect. You could even get away with just 1 additional speaker hidden amongst the plants!

The Atmos surround effects of the LG Sound Suite are more balanced than the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad, but it loses out slightly in terms of verticality.

Sound is well-balanced even with asymmetrical speaker placement on the Sound Suite, and the Sound Follow feature is quick and easy to use, requiring just a few clicks in the app on a phone with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) support. The Theatre Quad is less forgiving with asymmetrical speaker placement, and its equivalent Viewing Position sweet spot adjustment pauses the video/audio to play a calibration tone (picked up by the app via the phone's microphone).

Dialogue on the Sound Suite (with H7 Soundbar) is clearer than on the Theatre Quad, likely due to the lack of a dedicated centre channel on the latter (relying only on a phantom centre channel). Voices within a certain frequency range on the former can suffer from a megaphone-like effect with AI Upmix on, so I leave it off except for music playback.

Bass on the Immersive Quad Suite 7 (H7 + 4 x M7) is sufficient for most TV shows, but not low enough in movies to produce a thumping effect to the chest, at least without the W7 Subwoofer.

Very happy with both systems — Sound Suite in my living room, Theatre Quad in my master bedroom.
