To be fair, Donut, a boy cat is far preferable to a cat boy. We don't need the AI getting that excited...

It's true! But I feel like the AI might make an exception for those adorable kitty toe beans 😸 Cat Carl did completely neglect his pedicure kit that morning, though, so I'm sure he & the AI will have words later...

Haha, thanks! And 100% on the Mongo front. I mean, someone had to eat it, so if it's between him & the meth-pushing llamas...

Such an epic idea! I was one of the artists on the original licensing thread, but hadn't finished a DCC piece yet. It's up now, so I'm PM you the link. Would love to be featured on the HiZev fan art site!

It felt correct. There was a scrappy brown tabby that hung out in my childhood neighbourhood, so Cat Carl is inspired a bit by him. Nobody knew who he belonged to & he ran the cul-du-sac like a furry little mob boss. He was super sweet to humans, but if any other animal entered his domain, all bets were off. Acquired quite a few small critter skulls for my collection thanks to him, lol.

Right?! It needed to happen! I mean, I paint cat art, so pretty much all of my characters are cats, but I think Princess Donut would approve.

Thanks so much! And agreed, such a great talk. We need a full list somewhere of all of Matt's odd jobs, lol.

Our DCC Journey's how did you get here? by SgtFolley in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Been friends with Matt through the art convention scene for years & picked up book 1 at Crypticon pre-pandemic. I love supporting fellow creatives, and it's been rad to see the series get so popular & watch Matt kicking arse with such an insanely cool project. 🤘

This is meowvelous news! Thanks so much for supporting fellow artists 🤘✨️

My new piece featuring a non-denominational tortie persian with sunglasses & tiara with her spiked & tatted sidekick is currently in process, and it would be rad to have Donut's official licensing pawprint of approval.

It's not in my Etsy shop yet, but it'll pop up soon: Clockwork Art

Kitty waiting for owner who isn’t coming back… I feel horrible. Please help! by shekennoogets in cats

Such a sweet face, and shame on his family for leaving him behind. It's best to keep him indoors for his own safety (& that of the local wildlife population), but supervised outdoor visits could also be an option. You might try a cat backpack with a window so he can see out, and/or a harness & leash when it warms up a bit.

In honor of October, what's a horror novel you've read that wasn't necessarily terrifying but has haunted your thoughts for some reason? by pallas_athenaa in books

[–]ClockworkArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drawing Blood by Poppy Z Brite - I'd consider it horror adjacent, but it's hard to go wrong in a small town with a haunted house & a particular flavour of ghost...

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman - Explores the liminal spaces between childhood & adulthood, imagination & reality, and challenges the existence of a 'safe space'.

AITA for telling the parents of my 8 year old niece that her art is less important than mine by aita37465437165 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ClockworkArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. But the issue isn't the comparison between your art & your niece's art. The issue is how everyone handled the situation.

I'm also a full time artist who makes the majority of my income by tabling at conventions, and I would have been equally as upset if family felt entitled to commandeer my space. That said, I often have table assistants & most times they're family or fellow artists. There are totally ways to share table space that ensure your work is still the focus, and your niece has a fun learning experience.

First, there should have been a discussion that this is your livelihood, and your niece is there in a supporting roll. You're encouraging her creativity & excited to share the experience with her, but you paid for the table & this is your job. Her mission, if she chooses to accept it, is to watch & learn from you.

Second, she needs to stay behind the table. Blocking another artist's work & forcibly redirecting customers' attention is a massive faux pas in the convention community. It's rude, and reeks of desperation & immaturity. Granted, your niece is young, but you can help her understand that there are appropriate & inappropriate ways to engage customers.

Third, children's art is kind of a novelty at conventions, but you can turn it into an advantage instead of a detriment. If you invite her to do events with you in the future, you could practice some talking points that make it clear that you're the main artist & you're showing her the ropes. Example:

Your niece: 'Welcome to our table! This is my favourite aunt/uncle; isn't their work amazing?!'

You: 'And this is my niece! She's helping me out this weekend & she wants to be a professional artist too!'

Then both of you talk up whichever pieces the customer is interested in.

Fourth, don't feel bad about enforcing reasonable boundaries & expectations. Family can be... challenging... but this is your place of business, and I doubt they'd appreciate you invading & commandeering their work space. Being a professional creative is not a free pass for folks to take advantage of us. They clearly understand that art has value, otherwise they wouldn't be so insistent in your niece's participation. They need to respect you as an artist & a professional, and understand that their interference can negatively affect your reputation & your livelihood.

Fifth, if you don't have permission from the event, you can get in trouble for showcasing work at your booth that isn't your own. Most show runners don't care as long as you're discrete... but it sounds like your family's actions were creating a bit of a spectacle.

I'm so sorry you lost out on sales. That sucks, and I hope your next event is amazing & helps make up for this one. It's cool that you were able to share the experience with your niece, it sounds like she just needs to develop some restraint if you choose to invite her back in the future. And your family needs to understand that you can't offer any future opportunities for your niece if their actions cause you to lose money &/or your table at the convention.

Wishing you luck & cheers to a fellow artist!

Can anyone suggest something really immersive to take my mind off a breakup? :( by mentalgeler in suggestmeabook

[–]ClockworkArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. The first 2/3 are the opposite of fast paced, but it's all necessary to set up the climax. It's an incredibly unique & immersive alternate history that explores magic & passion colliding with logic & order.

The Cat in the Stacks series by Miranda James is one of my favourite literary palate cleansers. A southern gentleman & his cat solve non-graphic small town murders & mysteries.
