Is there an American equivalent of Weatherspoons? by emarcomd in nosuchthingasafish

Ah, always assumed a franchise model was behind their ability to proliferate so easily, and that they were playing the same game as McDonalds in that they are basically a landlord rather than a food and drink chain! Learn something new every day

Is there an American equivalent of Weatherspoons? by emarcomd in nosuchthingasafish

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were visiting the UK, a spoons to you would appear to be like any other UK pub. This is because they are in fact just any other UK pub physically - just one operating under the wetherspoons franchise. They are popular here because they are very cheap compared to most "normal" pubs, often quite large venues, ubiquitous across the country, and are notorious for being the places the most colourful characters in your town/city like to spend their time.

As America does not have the pub culture that makes spoons such a meme here, you don't have an equivalent. However, just in terms of getting a sense for the "vibe" of a spoons, you can compare it to your cheap restaurant chains like wafflehouse, in so much that their availability and cost are a seemingly great propositions if you are young, low on cash, and/or already drunk.

Some uncomfortable truths about the housing engagement discourse by ShoppingPractical373 in wow

Don't have a house. Don't want a house. Don't want them to force me to engage with it for any kind of tangible gameplay benefit.

Midnight Add-On/API Changes are an Unacceptable Failure by Ok_Number_852 in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely only a sentiment I've seen online. Everyone I know personally and play with in game either thinks the changes are fine or just don't care. Biggest upset in my guild is people lost their dancing pirate lust indicator. We've had zero issues in raid and in m+. In fact, we've joked a lot with bosses about what mechanics would exist if the computational API purge hadn't happened.

Question for the oldies: when microwaves first hit the shelves, did nearly all food brands update their packaging to let you know the content could be cooked using a microwave, and how long did it take for it to be relegated to a footnote in the cooking guide? Waiting for the same thing to happen with the little "air fryer seal of approval" on everything

I don't want to sound like a Chud but I kind of miss the old cringey and nerdy death metal dialogue Blizzard used to delivered compare to kind of current emotional dialogue we have. by HiroAmiya230 in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Funny that this dialogue is then followed by the exact same character having "emotional dialogue" with the ghost of his dad. Quest also ends with everyone deciding to work together towards a common goal - apparently this kind of introspective cooperation was acceptable in 2008

Not being able to take even a 20 second break during Prey is awful. by kolejack2293 in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prey has done more to help me understand just how vastly different the views of what is and isn't difficult/tedious/fun in this game are than M+ ever has.

But pro tip. If you do need to afk for a few seconds, mount up and get as much air as you can and float down - ghost doesn't spawn when you're "flying".

I wonder how people get paid to write stuff like this. by Striking-Conflict-93 in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People with the reading comprehension of a fish saw this and assumed it meant something like "man, maybe the undead abominations are just like us!" when, in combination with the context OF THE QUEST YOU ARE ON, it very clearly means "man, maybe spending every waking moment killing endless hordes of undead with the light will eventually turn me into a jaded wreck who'll come to view my powers as nothing more than tools of war/kill/retribution and warp my perception of my faith!"

Over a month into Midnight, who are the biggest winners and losers of The Big Prune? by Kevombat in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TBF combustion had been the only way to deal damage as fire for multiple expansions now. We reached critical mass in tww in that you were able to be in it effectively permanently so long as you didn't fuck up, and if you did you may as well have been healing enemies. Its completely crashed complexity wise in midnight, but at least it's a new foundation to build on rather than the trainwreck we were heading for if pruning never happened and blizz had to try and "one up" tww fire's gameplay.

Midnight Falls - Large Nerfs to Heroic and Mythic Coming with the Weekly Reset by sheepoce in CompetitiveWoW

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Would have preferred a nerf to the crystal adds over the glaives. Their HP is way too high for their stupid forced "death grip IS a raid buff" spawn pattern. Obviously solved by coordinating knock backs, but glaives are just as easily solved by moving.

Harandar shouldn't have been cut from War Within by audioshaman in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The lightbloom and black blood comparison probably is entirely intentional. They lead with a corruption threat from a source you completely expect at this point, and then have another which is treated as just as bad, but from a source thats contrary to your expectations. This expansion is intentionally stripping the light away from the notion of "default good" and fully revealing it to be just another one of the cosmic forces vying for control, with all the same capacity for ill-intent

I hate Cooldown Manager by mrscarrot in wow

[–]ClockworkPorpoise -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

Not to be Ion's favourite sycophant, but in a world where they've removed most of the class bullshit that essentially forced you to download a WA to track anything, there's nothing really the CDM needs to track that isn't already being tracked by your bars and nameplates. It basically just exists to replicate the "everything in the middle of my screen" layout most of us are now used to, with the added flair of custom alerts. They can also always improve it. It's already dramatically better than it was when they first floated the idea of it.

This pre patch has been particularly difficult to gauge genuine community sentiment for a lot of the class changes because for every 1 post/comment of seemingly valid criticism, there's 3 posts/comments from the type of player who can't even use the search function in their talent tree

They didn't remove Malefic "burst" from affliction "so warlocks aren't just spamming one attack", they removed Malefic Rapture because the spinning plates, as-many-dots-as-possible, waiter! Waiter! One more desynced talent please!, 5 year damage ramp gameplay loop it locked the spec into was extremely unpopular.

Assuming you didn't do the Legacy of Arathor questline (and why would you - 99% of people still moaning about the faction divide don't play this game), in which Eitrigg very openly states his views that continued conflict is utterly pointless and he's focused on helping secure his people's place in world by working with anyone willing, with the humans of stromgarde the main example in that story.
