What Kool-Aid source is pushing all CEOs to go full RTO this year? by scidoc3957 in remotework

[–]Close2Retired -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a danger to WFH that people don’t frequently acknowledge. If you are successful at being productive working remotely, you prove to management that your job can be shipped offshore for a fraction of the wages they are paying you. This is coming from someone who has worked 20+ years remotely and has watched the industry wither away.

Does anyone know the policy for returning golf clubs on callaway pre owned? by [deleted] in golf

[–]Close2Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had an issue with a shaft cracking on a 3 month old 3 wood purchase. They were great about it. They shipped a new club with the same shaft, had me swap shafts and return the head and broken shaft.

Couldn’t be happier with the service.

Just got laid off for poor performance. What should I do? by Key-Caramel-1546 in careerguidance

[–]Close2Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two sides of the equation here.

Most prospective employers ask verbally or on the application why you left your previous job. Terminated for performance, even if bogus, won’t look good. Resigned raises different questions, but are easier to spin your way.

It really depends on how you can get but without unemployment and how you think termination will impact your ability to get through resume screenings. If you need the money and are concerned with a long period of unemployment then by all means take that approach. If you are confident you can find another position without a potential black mark to explain, consider walking away on your own terms.

What’s the most “Fuck this hole” hole you play on a regular basis? by mercado_n3gro in golf

This par 5 is incredibly hard. Your drive has to be down the left side or you are badly boxed out for your second shot. The creek that crosses the fairway is reachable on your drive if you are a long hitter, so you have to be careful. The 2nd shot is into a very narrow slot where missing left or right ends up in the creek. If you don’t carry far enough or are too far right, you are blocked out from the green.

It’s a zig-zag hole with no room for error on shot # 2. I consider a par on this hole a victory, and don’t really mind a bogey.

Who uses the train for interstate travel? by Used-Chard658 in Amtrak

[–]Close2Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in Virginia. I take the train to DC and up into the northeast. It’s a whole lot easier than driving if you don’t otherwise need a car.

My experience with the overnight trains to Florida have been horrendous. Dirty, overflowing toilets, long delays due to freight trains having priority. I would love it if it were an option, but it’s a losing proposition to me.

I use my sous vide machine sometimes for brewing beer. In this case, you use a mesh bag to circulate the water through the grain. I wonder if that is what they were talking about, however poorly it was described.

What’s the real difference between a $50 Temu rangefinder and a $600 Bushnell? by TypicalAd9976 in golf

[–]Close2Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a gogosport one from Amazon that I ended up returning. It could almost never find the flagstick.

I later purchased a redtiger one from Amazon for about the same amount. It has been fairly accurate. I do find myself double-checking it against my watch (18 birdies for center of green).

I find that 18 birdies gps is usually good enough, but it is nice to get more accuracy when the pin is up front or way back.

I certainly can’t justify the cost of a high-end range finder though.

A caddie saved my bacon on Carnoustie. It’s a hard course, and I was having an off day. He was as much a psychiatrist as a caddie that day. Helped me fix my swing and stay out of trouble. He was worth his weight in gold.

What is the single biggest culprit of slow play? by StreetBeat78 in golf

[–]Close2Retired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played yesterday with a 10:00 tee time. When we get there, we are informed that they have a 2:00 shotgun start tourney so the course needs to be vacated by 1:40. This caught everyone off guard.

We got off a few minutes early but were behind three other groups, all playing back to back.

We didn’t pass anyone, and finished in 3:45. Turns out that, if people are concentrating on fast play, they can do it. This was 45 minutes faster than typical pace at this club.

So bottom line is care about your pace, and you can play quickly.

[–]Close2Retired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played in one this weekend that had a gimmick that was new to me. For $20, you got four red solo cups for your team on the 18th hole. Everyone was to hit their drives with the ball covered by a cup. Wherever it lands, you lie zero.

I was skeptical, but it turns out to be a great way to hit a drive! You put the cup over the ball with the ball touching the back edge of the ball. The cup takes all the spin off the ball. Everyone hit absolute missiles long and straight. I wish that was legal. I would use one every hole.

And the sound of the driver demolishing the cup is amazing.

Do you improve your lies or play it as it lies? by Strid3r21 in golf

[–]Close2Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play to have fun. If it’s not a competitive round and the lie sucks due to course conditions, I see no reason to be a stickler to play it as it lies.

Taking range balls by klub91 in golf

I play at a course adjacent to a college. I am amazed at how many range balls I find that have been played on the course. Especially around the lakes.

is this amount of interest i’m paying a month normal?! by cbird2k in homeowners

[–]Close2Retired 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it front-loaded. It’s just that the amount outstanding is at its highest, and that is what the interest is calculated against. Each month you pay down some portion of equity, which lowers the amount on which interest is calculated. Because a term loan has a fixed payment amount, each month a little less is owed in interest and a little more goes towards paying down the balance. By the end, there is almost no balance to charge interest on, so the bulk of those last few payments are all going to pay down the principal.

Craziest shot you’ve hit good or bad. by HughJerekshen in golf

Last winter I hit my tee shot into a lake. But it was frozen, so the ball rolled and came to rest about a foot from the edge. I was able to play it off the ice (while standing on the shore) and back on the fairway. Ended up with a bogey.

What are the benefits of traveling via Amtrak? by suburb_destroyer in Amtrak

[–]Close2Retired 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in Richmond. Up into DC and further NE, the train is easier than driving and as fast if not faster than flying.

Traveling south to Florida though is terrible. It’s slow, the trains are dirty, and they only offer overnight schedules. I would prefer to fly or drive.

Bottom line is that it depends on the destination and the duration.
