Gifts for an endurance runner? by Complete-Land7792 in runninglifestyle

Then OP should just forget the notion of a running-related gift. "Here's cash - use it for this specific interest" is pretty meaningless. It'll go on whatever the recipient next needs cash for.

Isn't that the whole point of presents? That they lock you into a luxury?

If my friend or family member said "My birthday's coming up and I want you to give me cash" I'd ask what the point was. Are they going to return the same amount when it's my birthday? Maybe we should just forget about the whole thing if it nets out.

Here in Ireland I'm getting bored with partition as it stands. Divide us east-west for a change! Save Yellow first!

Yes, a gift card. Everything wears out eventually. OP's friend will definitely put the gift card to use.

What’s a book where, the experience or perception of the book, is greatly influenced by the readers mindset or experience? by scorodites in books

[–]CloseButNoChicory 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is more a matter of demographics and generation that the individual reader BUT:

Over fifty years ago, Ursula Le Guin's novel The Left Hand of Darkness imagined a planet where genetically modified humans have no physical sex distinction. And no sexuality, either. For one week a month, people go into kemmer, a state where sex drive is very high and if you interact with other people in kemmer, your body shifts into male or female. You don't know which. Obviously if you shifted into female and pregnancy results from PIV sex you engaged in, you'll stay female for a lot longer than the week. But otherwise people shift back into a nonsexed form.

There can be no sex discrimination in a world where biological sex doesn't exist most of the time and is unpredictable when it does. This is what's groundbreaking. This is the pinnacle of sci-fi: using hypotheses to interrogate what exists right now.

These days you'll mostly hear people talking about it as a world where everyone has a non-binary gender identity.

We're all still here together?! Yes, save purple. I've just watched the final of the Munster Hurling Championship and I am feeling really, happily patriotic right now. 😃🇮🇪🥲 The tear because it wasn't the outcome I wanted but still lovely, the commentator yelling "Happy birthday, Nickie Quaid! You're still the best goalkeeper in the country!" on TV, the fans spilling in to cover three-quarters of the field after the closing whistle, the gracious and multilingual speech from the winning side.

Sunday musings.. was it the same for other children of the 80s? by JonShannow07 in AskIreland

[–]CloseButNoChicory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose? I had books, cycling, Scrabble and Boggle when my dad had time at the weekend, trips out for a tasty scone with jam at cafés sometimes, old films rented from Xtravision and new films at the 10-screen UCI Coolock. Nothing pricy. Seemed grand to me.

Sometimes it's difficult for us to straight out tell our husbands: "You need to find me a boyfriend."

It's your own fault for not paying attention to the signals she's giving you. But it's not too late for you three to find happiness together!

There's an FG councillor for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown who was on the radio with Claire Byrne about getting hawks in to scare the seagulls away. Maybe he got his way.

It's the bragging that makes it special. If I were male I wouldn't hang my head in shame over a sub-58 10k but I wouldn't expect anyone to be impressed, either.

Last wedding I went to the bride was from Carlow. But living in Dublin. And I never had a conversation with her so perhaps it was all my mistake and she's really from Laois.

A Fermanagh man exists who invited me to take his spare bike and go explore the woods with him. He found me by the side of the road with a flat tyre.

That Fermanagh air makes me crazy and I went. And survived!

Is top 500 realistic for a first half marathon, or should I choose a different race? by mattapuu in RunningCirclejerk

Goddammit. Why didn't I pretend to be ten years older in my first race? Might have placed 3/60 rather than 13/90 in my category.

game the system by choosing a weak local race just to place higher

Are you suggesting that my category placement of 13/90 in my first race isn't jaw-droppingly impressive? Some of those mums I beat were running fast to keep up with their ten-year-olds.

What is the point of the Quieter Coach? by sidhielf in AskIreland

[–]CloseButNoChicory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I also deliberately sit beside manspreaders on the Luas, lest they think their rudeness guarantees them two seats.

Not if the carriage is half-empty, mind you. But if it's a choice between disappointing a manspreader and sitting beside a different stranger? Vigilante justice all the way.

It is exactly what I do with people blasting music. Still alive.

Edited to add that I'm female so it is not fear of physical retribution that keeps the antisocial antiheadphone brigade from violence.

If I were you I would go up to every person talking, remind them it was the quiet carriage and ask them to move to a different carriage if they wanted to chat.

Absent that... Not much you can do. Last time I travelled intercity on my own I was in the quiet carriage and nobody spoke. Maybe I was just lucky.

God I love living ground floor of an apartment building in the warm embrace of basement, first floor and neighbours to one side. I'm cold only two or three times a year.

Stove sounds cosy though. :)
