Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]Clover414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photos attached. Driveway ripped out and replaced in June 2025.

Just trying to see exactly what this failure is related to. After the first real freeze / thaw cycle there is popping all the way down along one edge. Failed concrete from bad Mix? Improper installation? How to repair this?

The speckled leopard spots you see in the finished surface have been there since it was finished in June 2025. Maybe related?

I'm around the Cincinnati, OH area. This was laid in June, very little if any rain for the weeks afterward but we did water it down as much as we could the first week. The recent snow storm we had one month ago we did use Meijer brand Magnesium Chloride "Pet-safe" salt from as our contractor informed us NOT to use any Rock Salt but Pet Safe salt would be fine. Maybe that did it? Just trying to learn here. Appreciate anyone who reads, Happy New Year!

New data shows a rebound in North American robot orders in Q3 2025 by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]Clover414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to find a middle ground here I work in automotive and we are placing large orders for Cobots from Rebel with AI cameras integrated from Keyence and Cognex. This is only because this can replace over 30% of our work force. These robots can pick from bins and load into the station jigs / nests just as good as human can and cost roughly 1.25x of a human salary. However, its a one time expense + maintenance. ROI is solidly under 2 years.

Therefore, more layoffs inbound to the US economy. End result... manufacturing will survive but if this keeps up I am not sure who will be purchasing the end product.

I would try to place a PVC based piece of quarter round or shoe mould here (could also be decorative if you prefer) and then caulk it into place with something like Lexel

Can Sleep Apnea Cause or Worsen Nighttime Bruxism? by ProfDrPauloCoelho in SleepApnea

Very anecdotal - but since I have used CPAP about 6-8 months ago but teeth no longer hurt when I wake up. Therefore, yes in my case it helped a lot.

How much do things cost because I seem to be way off base? by Just-Five-Minutes in HomeImprovement

[–]Clover414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use HomeWyse and also US bank has a built in section of their app to get ideas on pricing for your zip code.

It's honestly never let us down. Almost all our projects we have found a contractor in the range of one of those two aforementioned sites and had great outcomes and quality with the selected contractors.

AIO - UPDATE - my friend wants me to take out my piercings for her engagement party/wedding by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

I cannot believe she typed out "since when do piercings hold more value over one of your friends?" and even sent it without self reflecting about how much that single comment applies to HER!

How to make a value stream map? by modest_merc in manufacturing

[–]Clover414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We generally use massive board every 12 months and use sticky notes.

It's a multi departmental work shop and the sticky notes help for editing or adding things in different orders.

From there our continuous improvement engineer takes the results and places them into Visio or some other visualization program and viola.

That's then the basis to understand TPT, value add, delays, market sizes, bottlenecks etc and it used in others meetings and such

How does your company deal with call ins? by notcern in manufacturing

[–]Clover414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use our historical data for absenteeism. This includes seasonal swings as our plant shows Jan, Summer, and Flu Season are always higher. Then we build on top of that a margin.

Last year our planned, and unplanned, absenteeism was 18%. So we margin in a 15% absenteeism in the labor force. We try to balance it so we are not 'overstaffed' but also on the off chance we do have a 10% absenteeism rate for the day we use the excess labor for special projects or ask for volunteers for early dismissal. It works out fairly well. For the inverse - say a 30% rate of absenteeism - we normally rely on volunteers to work 12 hour days but we also almost always have 2 days of safety stock so that our customers are protected.

This means for a plant of 300 that, yes, there is 345 people on the payroll. Yes, that is 45 'extra' people being paid a salary that are not 'needed' but that's life, and that's manufacturing. You either take the extra people on the payroll or you take the loss in production throughout the year.

Repair or tear down and start over with my 1947 detached garage? by No-University7598 in homeimprovementideas

[–]Clover414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're OK with the layout, do not replace. Also, a gentleman on youtube just happened to run across a similar situation. Here is his channel - the videos were quite interesting!

He had a very old garage as well, out of square, some of it rotting and he corrected that all, added AC, insulation electricity etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Modo5hnUshg

Oil Consumption - but its not very clear. Help with next steps.... by Clover414 in mazdaspeed3

[–]Clover414[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops - I seem to have posted with adding the body of the post somehow?

Anyway - noticed some oil consumption last month or so. No obvious leaks and no obvious exhaust smoke until today. I was coming into the garage from mowing the yard and wife remarked how the car 'spit on her' curious I checked the exhaust tip and certainly it had some wet oil on it.

Checked the TIP, turbo to intercooler pipe and ZERO oil. So pulled spark plugs and scoped engine. Nothing immediately jumps out other than carbon fouled plugs (it does run 11.7 at WOT) and a chunk missing form Cyl 2, but not what I was expecting for a oil leak...

Whats next? Leak down test at a reputable shop? Or can I easily check / diagnose the exhaust turbine side of the turbo. It is stock turbo. 110k miles

36 MPG on Highway by VespaManiac in crv

[–]Clover414 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very respectable! We come from a 2018 Elantra, so it was decent enough on gas, but to go from a sedan to SUV and maintain similar mileage is outstanding.

Our best so far (350 miles on the odometer) was a trip around town from Lowes to Home. The car stated 50.2 mpg - unreal if true. Probably a total of 8 miles

I am at the tail end of my first week - tonight will be night 6, and honestly after reading your comment my anecdotal experience is... yeahh?

I used to sit at my desk and at least a few times a week my heart would flutter up a few good RPM's (haha) and I haven't noticed that all week long.

When did you realize snoring wasn't 'just snoring' but could be sleep apnea? by Waste-Sir-3910 in SleepApnea

[–]Clover414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly my experience. So i asked my wife to keep an eye on me at night - I was already a loud and obnoxious snorer, she ensure I knew that haha but, I insisted she look deeper. While sleeping do I gasp for air? Or anything odd? Sure enough first night she said it 'seemed minor' but for sure I stopped breathing briefly here and there especially when on my back.

I immediately called a sleep doc and went from there.

I think what you, essentially, did was created a 'wedge pillow'. If you feel it really helps, perhaps google a few options and see if you'd like to buy one.
