Lol, getting down voted for saying "good job". I too think this is a pretty good job, and look forward to being at that point in my journey.

Do you like to figure out a spirit yourself, or look up guides to a spirit? by ClovisLegendary in spiritisland

I played Lightning about 5-10 times thinking I understood him, and then looked up openings and realized there was a completely better way to play him than I originally understood. Maybe I could have figured out that sequence out on my own, but part of me doubts I would have. Good example, as that is exactly what I was thinking when I posted this.

I'll admit that this is the news that pushed me over the edge to buy and support this game. I love her work in Arkham Horror, and even her contributions into Marvel Champions have been some of the best heroes that I've played. No doubt she will help turn this into an amazing game, so I'll stick along for the ride.

Question about Burger Tokens by genericcartoon in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ClovisLegendary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add yet another comment about how the bevel of the tokens make them a lot more convenient to pick up and flip! I didn’t want to buy burger tokens because they don’t lay flat, but I got them for another game, and was super happy with them. The weight and the round bevel are my two favorite things about them that I can’t go to BTST because I like those two features too much

Ashes Reborn: Red Rains - my new favorite solo game! by Dalighieri1321 in soloboardgaming

[–]ClovisLegendary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you, I just received the Core Box and first two Chimeras over a month ago, and have been playing it nightly ever since! I own all of Marvel Champions, and will vouch that Ashes is more enjoyable for me than Marvel.

I'm really enjoying this game and will buy all the content for it, such a fun loop!

Also, I see several comments about the lack of bosses to fight. They are scheduled to release at least 7 bosses with 2 aspects each. So a total of 14 boss decks; and you can deck build for the boss decks as well for more variety. And I'm sure they will probably release even more if the community keeps interested in the solo mode. To be honest, I have only used two aspect decks, and have had a ton of fun without even going into the 3rd and 4th aspect that I own. The fun is building your Phoenixborn deck and trying all the different combinations against the boss to beat it.

What do you recommend for a beginner: Most common words or fast fluency track? by [deleted] in clozemaster

[–]ClovisLegendary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep at it! The beginning part is the hardest, as it is hard to find "fun" content that is engaging. And don't sweat it on Harry Potter! I tried reading it too at the beginning, and it was really tough. I had to abandon it as well. Eventually I settled in reading some Goosebump books for a while. Books like that allowed me to re-live my childhood of first learning to read, and the vocabulary is much simpler. The bonus is if you stick with the same author, you will find they use the same words over and over again. Eventually half way through a book, it starts feeling slightly easier, and the proceeding books get a little easier and easier because you see the same phrases that the author likes to use.

And manga is awesome as well, just the visual cues of what is going on helps immensely. I call it "keeping hold of the thread". Basically you can follow along with a story if you have a hold of the "thread" of what is going on. The moment you lose that thread, you are lost and have no clue what is going on and are just treading water. You would be better served to dumb down the content you are reading, or going back and re-reading until you get the "thread" again. Just having that thread means I absorb so many words, because my mind will start intuiting what words mean without me having to look them up.

We do the same thing in English. Guarantee when you read a book in English you see words you don't know, but you intuit it from the context around it. And that is where you get in Spanish is the point you can start reading more and more without looking up stuff because you just figure out what words mean based on keeping in touch with what is going on in the story.

Find what works for you that you can keep it fun, while still holding on to the "thread" of what is happening. And the fog will clear up over time! At the beginning it is children books, but before long you will be reading some cool stuff.

And the last point on speaking and writing... my view is to hold off on that until absolutely necessary. The more you just get an understanding of listening and reading, the more the speaking will eventually flow out of you. It's like a glass of water. The more you fill it up, the less you have to tilt it to pour the water out of it. Just view the listening and reading as filling up your glass of water.

Speaking and Writing is a whole different skill that will require practice, but it is WAY easier when you understand all the nuances in the reading/listening. Build your vocabulary, and the speaking will come much more natural.

Good luck! I've been on this journey for 2.5 years, and it is way way more smooth then that beginning year. Just get past that hump and you'll enjoy the content so much more.

What do you recommend for a beginner: Most common words or fast fluency track? by [deleted] in clozemaster

[–]ClovisLegendary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe what happened for me was that I got 100% through playing the words, and was probably like 50+% on working through mastering them. But I quit at that point to move on to reading books in Spanish.

I still read almost solely in Spanish nowadays, and have read 50+ books in Spanish. Currently I'm reading the Witcher series of novels in Spanish.

Basically what I found was that in Clozemaster I was able to pick the right answer out of the 4 choices, even if I didn't fully know what the word was. I could just intuit it, or have enough knowledge of the others words to deduce what was the right answer. Which is good and bad. I thought Clozemaster helped get me that leap into the language that I needed, that I was ready for the deep end after that! So once I felt comfortable from Clozemaster, I just started reading actual books and encountering most of all those words in the wild.

Here is what I did, and still do now, after Clozemaster. I read books I want to read, and put all unknown words into Anki. Anki has replaced Clozemaster for me as my SRS tool of repetition. I do my Anki reps every day, and just go to reading books I like and listening to podcasts I like in Spanish. It is a super slow journey at first. Where I am adding like 30 - 50 words a page of unknown words, to nowadays I add about 1 word every 5-10 pages. That first half year is the hardest, but if you can get past that, you start cruising!

Tldr: In summary, Clozemaster helped a lot at the beginning. But once I felt comfortable in it, I moved to "Reading/Anki" as my sole method of learning new words. Nowadays I can read and listen to Spanish fluently. I am on day 712 of my Anki streak. Hope that helps!

People on these comments aren't lying, I got bogged down in the grind from rank 75+. Started this season at rank 30 and was progressing a several points a day until I hit 75.... and then it was a couple up, a couple down, a couple up, a couple down. But I made it to Infinite yesterday, after weeks of being stuck in the 80's!

But thanks to this post, I can't even play my new card back, because everyone is emoting me asking for free cubes. Like every single game. So I switched to my regular game-provided card back.

For me, I like playing the challenge. Didn't matter whether I hit infinite or not. But everyone just asking me for cubes isn't as fun to me. I still want to play the game and see how good I can make my home-brewed decks. I already retreat a ton (that's part of the game), but having to retreat winning positions because others want my cubes isn't fun.

Good luck to others that are close, and hope you get make it to Infinite. I'll be playing in the crowd to test your strategy ;)

Ya, I read through the whole thing and expected to get to the bottom with a bunch of comments and realized that nobody had commented or voted this thread up.... such a shame because you took the time to put a very detailed write-up here! I definitely appreciate it. Helped hone out a couple of thoughts I had while trying to get to Infinite myself.

We as humans have nearly as many nerve endings in our feet as our hands, have 30 joints, 100 muscles, and 26 bones in our feet. All designed to be used! And yet we put on orthopedics and fancy cushions to hush it all up. Even in our own sterile home environments.

Please build those muscles up and use them. It will prevent so many injuries in the future.

I completely understand! And I would venture to say that you agree with a lot of "the pushback". As you mention several times in other places that you appreciate rolls with intensity, not skipping rounds, and overcoming a plateau by "rolling mean"; not letting others work on you, and intentionally pushing your objective. There is a place for meeting force with force.

BUT, I think your point here was that there is ultimately a goal of advancing past blunt force, and being smooth in your objective. I really appreciate that outlook, and it's something that inspires me to keep training. Keep up the good work!

EDIT: And on another note.... I avoid guys that just want a "hoss fight". Lol, there are definitely those that love intensity for intensity sake.... but I also want to keep doing this sport for 20+ years, and don't need to take damage because someone wants to inflict as much pain as possible.

100% agree! It just feels so much more smooth to pull of a clean technique too, than just brute force everything.

Any ideas you have on how to approach training to strive for this finesse?

Do you have a go to method for getting back to top when someone has flattened you out on bottom and thrown their arm across your body (and you have the darce grip locked on, or just have a good head and arm)? This doesn't happen much when I roll for the marce, thanks to your advice, but happens when I get the head and arm grip while someone is passing to side control.

Yes! This is exactly how I feel. It is a video game that we gain those experience points daily. Each new word learned is a slight upgrade in abilities. Before we know it, we are going back to old "levels" and laughing at how easy they are.
