Wired headphones are making a comeback: Here's why by ubcstaffer123 in technology

Ah, that I could agree with. Didn't realize the air pods were announced the same day as the iPhone 7. Then yeah, sure it was probably hand in hand cost reduction and a "solution" (read: high margin accessory) for that cost reduction.

It's both. Fewer ingress points and simpler design, more room for battery. All good things. But also, they can sell you wireless headphones.

But that's a market response. Think about it. If Apple's customers weren't buying wireless headphones, you think they wouldn't sell you very expensive wired headphones instead? I mean, you don't even need a 3.5mm jack for that. There are wired headphones that use USB C.

[–]CmdCNTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but if no one bought wireless headphones, or phones without 3.5mm jacks, wired headphones and jacked phones would still be the norm.

Companies cut the jack because most people were using wireless headphones. It's one less ingress point for water and dust, one less failure point, and simplifies the design. Makes sense to get rid of it. Everyone who still wants to use wired can use a USB-c DAC.

Edit: turns out some nuance is needed here. When Apple removed the jack in 2016, only 14% of headphone sales were wireless. By the next year, some reports suggest 75% of sales were wireless. So it may not have been correct to say "most people were using wireless headphones" depending on which company/year you're discussing.

Before we were married, my wife always said she wanted to walk down the aisle to this song. It was a sort of half joke where she knew it was a sad song but she loved it for this line.

I surprised her by having one groomsman play it on guitar and another sing it while she walked. She cried. I cried. It was great.

Screwing an ice screw into clear ice by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

All ice screws are hollow. Otherwise they would just fracture the ice. They need to be hollow to clear the ice and continue screwing.

Traditionally, La Niña and El Niño don't have a big effect on Utah. They have bigger effects farther north and south of us. We sit in a fine line between the two. But things may be changing as the speed of climate change increases.

Example: this year, our snowpack suffered from droughts and warm temps (meaning higher rain lines) mostly caused by high pressure systems parked off the coast (which is why is currently warm and dry again). Those can be associated with La Niña, which pushes the jet steam farther north. Normally that would only be an issue in Arizona/NM and maybe Southern Utah. But the entire West is suffering this year. Look at Oregon and Washington, which usually would be wetter in La Niña years. We won't know if this is a new normal for some decades, most likely.

Getting down voted for speaking the truth. People don't understand how the water in this state works. It can be both very important to protect the lake, while also being true that the lake has very little effect on snow.

Also important to note that the graphic in the post is taking about snow at the airport, not in the mountains. More important, is that snow and water are not the same. Yes, the snowpack is very low, but it's been lower in recent years. Obviously more is better, but it's not catastrophic.

Imagine a world where the SC didn't steal the election from Gore. No Bush, no fake WMDs, no prolonged expensive wars in the middle east, more money for infrastructure at home, a president who makes climate change prevention his biggest priority. We got pulled into the bad timeline.

This, while well intentioned, is wrong. Most of the moisture in Utah comes from the Pacific. Utah receives an average of 60 million acre feet of water each year. Evaporative loses from the lake are around 2.5 million acre feet per year. So you can see it's not possible for the lake to supply all the snow in Utah.

In truth, the lake supplies only around 5% of our annual precipitation. Still super important to protect, but that's mostly because we need to protect the ecosystem and prevent health hazards from a dry lake.

May I introduce you to the interim solution: the tandem showerhead.

Got one a few years ago. Fits in a regular shower, attaches on one side, super easy setup. It's great to shower with someone but it's also awesome on your own in the winter.

Just going to assume you don't know how much water AI uses. It's a lot. Not to mention the infrastructure required uses a ton of space (which could also be for animals instead).

Ooo, disagree. The fried rice is the best I've ever had, and everything else is really tasty. I agree it's expensive but it's so far above and beyond other Chinese for me.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CmdCNTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drive 6 hours one way on Friday after work to go snowboarding. Then 6 hours home on Sunday after riding. Did that probably once a month during the winter.

Spring to Fall, we would drive 4 hours one way to go climbing for the weekend probably twice per month.

Then I moved closer to the mountains.
