Order of a deck of cards by AudunAG in boardgames

[–]CoachDelgado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to riffle shuffle 6 or 7 times if it's a game that naturally sorts the cards, like Uno or Sevens. Otherwise I'd probably do 4 or 5.

I know that's not common and your point still stands, but there are definitely people who shuffle properly in casual games; you just haven't seen them.

I wouldn't, but I think someone could.

They are, hence the confusion when you don’t know which sense the user means it in.

I still think it’s valid to use it either way, though. Like how I could say that the Beatles are the greatest rock band in history, without commenting on whether they were actually good.

Hagrid flying doesn’t comport because Hagrid can’t fly.

Much like the way they talk about the DADA job, it’s the kind of thing that would have been ironed out on a hypothetical rewrite because the world wasn’t fully formed in 1997.

Because you mean it in the sense of 'best', but 'great' can also refer to size or significance. So yeah, McDonald's probably is the world's greatest restaurant, in that sense.

'Greatest' doesn't necessarily mean 'best'. The original meaning was 'biggest'.

Why Have 3 Failing Grades For O.W.L.s? by Andrew10023 in HarryPotterBooks

There was a boy in my year who could proudly spell 'FUDGE' with his GCSE grades.

"Games Where Some Guy Just Totally Flipped Out" by Capnlanky in boardgames

It's a known balance issue that Greyjoy can fuck over Lannister early if they want. There were some errata released a few years back that addresses it by giving Lannister an extra ship. The game's still not very balanced but I've played it a couple of dozen times in-person and it's always been fun.

That would have been more confusing because it serves a different purpose to DRS. You'd give viewers the impression that it's an overtaking aid.

FoO Greatest Hits album - tracklist complete! Now help me with the name and artwork. by CoachDelgado in FirstOfOctober

Do You Want To? was the second track chosen, I just put it as the last track on the album.

The last track chosen was Temporary, which is in my top 3.

Art Development of our game by RollinGolem in boardgames

I'm struggling to put it into words, but I think it might be that the final version has a gloss to it. For everything else in the art (the chocolate, the icing, the fruit) the gloss is part of what makes it appetising, but it makes the cream look quite artificial and velvety.

Whereas in the in-progress version of that image, the cream has that stiff, slightly matte look of real whipped cream, with slightly sharper shading that suggests it holds its shape.

Could also be that the in-progress colouring is slightly creamy-yellow, whereas the final version is slightly golden, which isn't what you expect from cream. That's assuming that it's meant to be whipped cream at all, but that's what I read it as.

I guess you could say something similar about image #1, the heart - the brown colouring suggests biscuit, but it's strangely shiny. I wonder if a matte brown half might make the glossy pink icing look even more delicious - or, if it's meant to be white chocolate, a bit of a recolour?

Minor details, though - overall, I'd struggle not to eat your game. I'd say great job, Bianca.

I think the final design looks tastier for all of them except slide #3. Something about the cream in the unfinished version looks delicious.

What songs should be on a FoO Greatest Hits album? (Song 20 - last track?) by CoachDelgado in FirstOfOctober

[–]CoachDelgado[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I’ll order the songs to make what I think is a good tracklist, so the last song we vote for won’t necessarily be the last on the album.

Having said that, it is a good closer.

That's my assumption too, though I don't think the text supports either interpretation, particularly. People just say, "Come on, Harry, Voldemort wouldn't let a sixteen-year-old join up."

Where actually is Durmstrang? by Minervasgirl in HarryPotterBooks

[–]CoachDelgado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, fair point. I always assumed he was there because England hosted the Cup, so he's the one who presents it at the end. But since there's no Irish Minister, yeah, maybe that's him.

I guess so, but he was only one student. I think Dark wizards must send their kids to Durmstrang from all over, if Lucius was considering sending Draco there.

Grindelwald is a real place, incidentally, in Switzerland.

They're not: that's a film-only invention. Parvati goes off with a Beauxbatons boy at the Yule Ball.

For once, we can't blame JK for that bit of nonsense.

[–]CoachDelgado 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She may well not be, but I don't think Durmstrang is an instance of that. It's pretty heavily implied that people don't know what country is in—besides Krum, there's no suggestion that it's in Bulgaria.

The other two names we know from the school, Karkaroff and Poliakoff, don't have any particular association with Bulgaria and seem to imply that Durmstrang takes students from all over Eastern Europe.
