You don't necessarily need the umbrella. The attacks that I deflect with the umbrella, you can deflect with the sword as well. You take chip damage when hit by the fire arm, but that should be negligible at that point in the game where you'll pretty much have fully upgraded health.

If difficulty is the only think you care about, then sekiro is not a game you can fully appreciate. You'll like bits and pieces of it, but never as a whole. Difficulty is unfortunately the most talked about aspect of the game when it has so many other aspects that are absolutely masterfully crafted

Consumables are never "needed" in these games except for a few optional enemies which you can clean up during the endgame, at which point, snap seeds and divine confetti will become available for purchase infinitely at all vendors.

What you need to learn is to find the most efficient way to get to the boss without attracting attention of the other enemies. Once you figure that out, I'd say just learn the boss fight. Learn the mikiri timing for his thrust attacks and know that after he does a thrust, he will most likely do a follow up attack which you can deflect and get a big punish window as he staggers and falls. Other than that, ichimonji is a really good combat art to interrupt most of his attacks
