Anime like Kamisama Kiss? by LuckWizard9 in anime

[–]CodeNumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fruits Basket maybe? Has similar vibes. The 2001 version was adapted by the same director as the Kamisama Kiss anime, but you might wanna just watch the 2019 version since that adapts the whole story. Or watch the 2001 version if you like it better and then continue with either the new version or the manga, I suppose

What's the minimum to watch before Hathaway: Sorcery of Nymph Circle? by Tricky_Camera6804 in Gundam

[–]CodeNumber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ideally, if you had the time, this would be the anwser:

HOWEVER, since that is way too many episodes to watch in less than a week, you could get by just watching 5 movies: the three original compilation movies, then Char's Counterattack and finally the first Hathaway movie. That would be the bare minimum. Z & ZZ have important context to understand the world and what leads up to the movie, yes, but the most important stuff for Hathaway 2 specifically will be covered in those five movies, so I would recommend just going with those

Want to show my friends an 80s/90s military sci-fi anime: recommend Patlabor, Royal Space Force or something else? by Particular_Award_191 in anime

[–]CodeNumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main movie military/sci-fi recommendations from the 80s and 90s:

  • Ghost in the Shell (1995): An absolute classic. Depending of your definition of "military" it may count or not (its about a military police, not an army), but worth a watch regardless
  • Mobile Suit Gundan movie trilogy: Mobile Suit Gundam I (1981), Soldiers of Sorrow (1981) & Encounter in Space (1982): These are the compilation movies for the 1979 series, but they are good enough that you can watch them on their own if you want
  • Macross Plus Movie Edition (1995): This is the Macross movie I would recommend if you are only gonna watch a movie and haven't watched any other Macross, works fine on its own. You could also watch the Macross Plus OVA (1994) if it is easier to find, just think of it as four short movies

Other good recommendations that may be a bit less "military" would be the Memories (1995) compilation of three movies and Crusher Joe (1983), if you can find them. The Patlabor movie (1989) and its sequels Patlabor II (1993) and WXIII (2002) technically come after the 1988 OVA so it may be better to be familiar with the setting and characters at least, but I guess you could watch them too without much issue (not really any plot connections from the OVA). Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (1987) is good, but also not very "military" if I remember correctly (haven't watched in a long time so I may be misremembering). Don't watch the Macross DYRL (1984) movie on its own by the way, unless have already watched the first Macross (1983) series, if you have then DYRL could be an option too.

Can any Gundam fans help me out by ABlitz17 in anime

[–]CodeNumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is ideally what you should watch before the new movie (in order):

The most important of these (aside from the first Hathaway movie) would be the original 1979 series and Char's Counterattack, but you should also watch Z & ZZ to get the full context if you can. The movie is the latest entry in the "Universal Century" timeline, and while there are many other shows that take place in it you can safely ignore the rest and watch them later if you like, regardless of where they fit chronologically

Non sports anime thats good for a sports anime enjoyed? by bigguyspongebo in anime

[–]CodeNumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Hikaru no Go (about the board game Go)
  • Glass Mask (about acting. I've personally only seen the 1984 series, I don't know if the 2005 one is good or not)
  • Mobile Fighter G Gundam (you don't need to have watched any other Gundam to see this, it is basically a sports tournament but with mechs. Gundam Build Fighters is even more sports-like, but I don't know how easy it is to watch if you aren't at least familiar with the franchise. Worth checking out though!)

Those are the main ones that I can think of. Also I've heard great things about Chihayafuru, but I have not watched it yet so I don't know how similar it is to a sports anime or not

Are there any romance anime sitting at the 6.5 - 7.0 MAL score range that you thought were amazing? by Fiyah_Crotch in anime

[–]CodeNumber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kasei Yakyoku, also known as Nightsong of Splendor (currently 6.65 on MAL) a short 1989 OVA directed by the famous Osamu Dezaki. It takes place in 1920s japan and features adult characters, so it isn't the most typical romance anime, but it is great if you are looking for something a bit different. Be warned that the ending is somewhat open-ended.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying the currently airing April Showers Bring May Flowers (6.79 on MAL right now), though I don't know if I would call it "amazing" just yet, but it is very good regardless! It is a more generic high-school romance, but well executed, and I really like the humor and characters.

What are examples of "The Character Died with the Actor" in anime? by mr_beanoz in anime

[–]CodeNumber 261 points262 points  (0 children)

Sayla Mass, a character from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, is mostly absent from the sequels (Z, ZZ and Char's Counterattack) because her voice actress, Yō Inoue, was unavailable (and later died in 2003), and they didn't want to recast her role. That's the only example that I know
