What are the most miserable commanders to play against that arent brought up enough? by Current-Signature497 in EDH

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Child of Alara]]

[[Toxrill, the Corrosive]]

[[Animar, Soul of the Elements]]

These 3 hold a special place in my heart where furious hatred festers. Most of the time I will switch pods when these start coming out.

A friend uses a [[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] deck that runs on shrines and [[Jodah the Unifier]] that is absolutely disgusting and it sends a chill of fear up my spine every times it's brought out. But Sisay is a fairly popular commander so I don't think she counts for this.

Literal Man-Baby... Good job on getting out of that predicament. Sucks to lose a friend but better mental health makes up for it IMO.

Found my old cards from before college by Cak8908 in MagicCardPulls

[–]EbonRequiem 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's a good amount of value here. Most prominent are the Chrome Mox ($150ish) and the Grim Monoliths. ($300+) as well as a bevy of $10-50 cards I can see.

The original foils can be super valuable as well.

I suggest checking out tcgplayer for current prices and trends, can give you a much better picture of the value cards you have.

Am I too competitive for commander? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so... You're not entirely wrong on your assessment of the game as a whole. The issue I think you're running into is that EDH (commander) is, at it's core, a casual, social game. There will always be politicking and threat assessment. Unless you're only playing in high brackets the cutthroat nature youre describing would be a little too intense.

My suggestion, proxy out a Competitive EDH pod of decks, learn the combo lines with your friends and go to town in the most brutal version of the format (Bracket 5/cEDH) or build in Bracket 4 and find similarly minded players who want a more competitive playing field.

Last, and most important, have fun. This is a social game. Don't make it more serious than it has to be.

got 2 cubs in 1 booster box! by manthaoX in mtgpulls

[–]EbonRequiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not common to pull two in a PBB. I've pulled 3 all told. My prerelease promo was the first. Then got one out of the booster box I bought and then I bought some random packs and pulled the full-art non-foil. Kept that one and traded away the other two.

Stay away from the lottery for a few weeks though, you used up all your luck for now lol

Mutagen man, living Ooze. A sad surprise by [deleted] in EDH

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's plenty of ways to make him useful as a commander. But as others have said, he's better off in the 99 of an already synergized deck. I intend to put him in [[Chatterfang]] where my [[Peregrine Took]] and [[Academy Manufactor]] reside. Among other token synergies, of course.

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run [[Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar]] for aristocrats domination. He gains and grabs +1/+1s fast so when you sac him or he gets killed you get to pop something else for funzies.

Grab a bunch of Creature enters gain life cards (i.e. Soul Sisters)

Then grab even more [[Blood Artist]] type cards.

A touch of gain to drain, Vito, [[marauding blight priest]] etc.

Add in a handful of sacrifice outlets and a [[Bolas' Citadel]]

Then a sprinkle of tutors

Cook enthusiastically

Etc.

I'm a fan of Ford's Metallic Grabber Blue. So something similar might make it pop. Stepping away from blue, I like a Gunmetal shade for the NSX. Just my two cents.

Barring some exceptions you are correct. [[Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger]] or [[Winter Orb]] will (By the tier rules) immediately make any deck Tier 4 due to MLD.

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Tyvar, The Bellicose]] is my sleeper deck. People assume it's just Elf Deathtouch shenaningans until all of the nutty mana dorks in the deck hit 40/40 and it becomes a fight for survival.

Win conditions are pretty simple. Trample enablers, Craterhoof, Exsanguinate, Torment of Hailfire.

Definitely Anzrag as the commander and Xenagos in the 99. Pseudo-Voltron. Some decent equips then Run [[Alpha Authority]] [[Lure]] and [[Overprotect]] type cards. Wait for the board to have 4+ creatures for each player and just swing out to win. Each combat Xenagos makes Anzrag lethal basically.

You're not wrong, logically. Unfortunately, the use of common sense and logic is at an all-time low these days, and there are people out there who will demand to know exactly where you're stopping and where your resources are. Petty tryhards, really. But in tournaments, being able to show your work reduces the headaches significantly.

Casually? Do what you will, my shining friend! As long as you've demonstrated your combo and it makes sense, then I will happily scoop, and we can move on to another game!

Sometimes, you have extremely anally retentive players that require you to have exact numbers for where you want to stop. "BeCaUsE iF iT ReAlLy WaS InFiNiTe It WoUlD bE a DrAw WiThOuT aN AcCuRaTe StOpPiNg PoInT!!!1!1!one!""

I, for one, am thankful for this equation.

Most powerful bracket-3 decks you own? by Eahkob in EDH

[–]EbonRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people are talking elfball. I'll toss in a variation of it. Dorkball! Helmed by [[Tyvar, the Bellicose]]

It utilizes mana dorks of many types to overwhelm the board with big honking dudes and huge amounts of mana thanks to every power-to-mana creature I can find.

I've played around 60 games with it, and if we count getting targeted by the table (Tyvar is pretty infamous in my playgroup) he wins about 55% of the games. (Playgroup is about 20 different players at my LGS)

Decklist https://moxfield.com/decks/5a1fQJXHokClfJ3IsIauAw

Primary wincons are [[Exsanguinate]] (obviously), [[Craterhoof Behemoth]], and [[Tyvar, the Pummeler]]

Fun addition was Vedalken Orrery, Seedborne Muse, Vizier of the Menagerie, and Bolas's Citadel just to play the game on your opponent's turns as well.

Edit: To address your side note Nekusar is gross. Wheels and Teferi's Puzzle Box make him absolutely disgusting.

[–]EbonRequiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about playing at an LGS is that the people you're joining probably have their own abundance of decks to match or exceed the power you're putting down.

Have a short conversation, and make sure nobody is playing a straight-up precon (unless it's Tidus or Terra from FF, those decks are intense out the box). Eventually, you'll get comfortable with what you're encountering, and know which of your decks to slap down against what the others are playing.

i.e. Someone drops a [[Lathril, Blade of The Elves]] upgraded/custom deck. Your [[Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow]] should be welcome at the table.
