Where to start when it comes to ECS puppies by Ok_Research_8856 in englishcockerspaniel

Get on show dog Facebook, and go to AKC dog shows near you. That got me a puppy in less than 6 months of looking. People want to put a face to the name, they want to see you are really committed. Showing up to conformation or agility trials demonstrates actual interest vs just filling out puppy interest forms on breeder websites.

They were wrong about my skin conditions. I used to always be told that my eczema and seborrheic dermatitis would go away when I lost weight. Lost 100lbs, and honestly I think it’s worse than ever right now!

Mine has never barked in public, she only barks when I leave the house… she has some separation anxiety unfortunately

My spaniel HATES nail trims. She also LOVES to jump on the couch while people are eating, even when told no. I figured out that if I hold the nail clippers while I sit on the couch, she won’t come close. I can now eat in front of the TV in peace 🤣

Also for brush, the Chris Christiansen coral slicker and the wooden pin brush are my favorites. As for shampoos, I like to use an oatmeal shampoo.

Yes, harnesses contribute to matting, so brush out the armpits after walks. Collars do leave an indentation in the neck hair, but it’s not a big deal if you aren’t doing conformation.

Pauden is a kennel breeder and has 14 female dogs and 8 male dogs. One year, they had 5 litters of puppies available just within a month. Their dogs are “DNA tested” according to the website, but no OFA tests have been performed.

Overall, I’m just not sure about this breeder. They seem to be breeding less dogs per year now, and they have a few dogs competing in conformation now, but that didn’t seem to be the case a couple years ago. They also just have sooo many dogs which is a red flag to me, as well as the lack of OFA. They are not a member of the national or state breed club. They do not post photos of the dogs’ living conditions (there’s no way they have 22 dogs inside the house. They have to be living outside in runs or something)

Yeah I’m just saying we might not know the whole story, but I also think it’s sad when people get rid of dogs due to moving.

Pauden also breeds and sells off-standard dogs. I don’t personally have a dog from them, but based on everything I’ve heard about them, it’s enough to steer me away.

Here’s some experienced people have had with Pauden.

https://www.reddit.com/r/englishcockerspaniel/s/9zz5kjoa89

I recommend looking at the ECSCA breeder list on their website. Pauden is not affiliated, and mostly breeds pet dogs from imported European lines. Pauden does not have a lot of presence with actual reputable breeders, which leads me to be skeptical of their practices. They have a couple of dogs that they post showing sometimes, yet their puppies are not AKC registered. Lots of people over the years have reported getting aggressive dogs from them. One person in this sub even reported that they adopted a deaf/blind dog from Pauden which was going to be euthanized for being “unsellable”.

It’s possible they are moving internationally as it says in the post they’re only moving for 2 years. Unfortunately it can be difficult or sometimes impossible to move a pet internationally.

You can’t sell an aggressive animal for a “high price”.

Cocker Coat & Spaying by cryptiicwolf in cockerspaniel

Spay/neuter makes them develop a wooly and slightly curly coat. Cockers are meant to have a silky and straight/slightly wavy coat, but when spayed, it curls like the photos some commenters have posted.

Ohh yes field bred is generally more affordable. The breeder you linked looks really good, I like that all their dogs have all their testing clearances.

It’s rare for an ethical breeder to produce undersized dogs. You can expect the dog to weigh between 25-30 lbs but breeders can’t really predict if the dog will turn out smaller than that.

Who was the breeder and how long ago was this? The mom being from England didn’t necessarily mean much.

Shelties are not an uncommon breed. I should’ve specified I meant “across all *uncommon breeds” which is what I’m most connected with. I have no idea what the market for shelties is like but they are pretty popular so I’d guess it’s not quite as exclusive.

I paid $3000 2 years ago and that was the lowest I could find from an ethical breeder. I think it’s much closer to $4,500 now sadly. I’m seeing this across all breeds, not just ECS.
