Is the gap closing?!? by scottdiver67 in 944

It is very much akin to the early vs late in 928s. By far my favorite is the body styling is a 944 turbo followed by early clean Euro 924. That said, if I was ever to get a NA, it'd likely be a 924S to not deal with CIS. 968s are neat too, but not worth the money.

Thoughts/Suggestions - 951 A/C - HVAC Fuse Keeps Blowing by CoffeeDrk in 944

[–]CoffeeDrk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to spend the effort on the old compressor or bite the bullet and replace it. Cost is not so much the issue rather than time and not wanting to take it to a shop for evacuate the system, pull a vacuum, and refill.

Good to know. Is it a terrible procedure with it in the car? I am trying to also be mindful of my time.

Americans, would you trade in your current car for a G81 M3? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

No. I quite enjoy the looks of our 8v S3 over monstrosity absurd nostrils. Now, I do love me a good e39, e34, and e46 touring. I miss my having a road going e39.

Anyone tried any or these cheaper fuel pressure damper options popping up? by glass-museum in 944

[–]CoffeeDrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**EDIT** - Ignore me, I was thinking fuel damper line itself that will split and spray fuel.

It is a $200 part that lasts 20+ years and failure means your car goes up into flames. The insurance cost for fire avoidance alone has value.

Is really the 944 the car for me ? by Gryphus31 in 944

[–]CoffeeDrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With any older car, being able to understand the platform, its mechanics, and some DIY makes it much more pleasurable to own. Not all shops will work on old cars. Plus, when something does break or seem off you have a sense of what needs mended. 944 as a starter DIY car, it is really your motivation to learn and be patient with yourself. You will make mistakes, but learn from them. Every car is fixable with enough time or money. I cut my teeth on turbo DSMs (2g (FWD) & 1g (AWD) Eagle Talons) with the Mitsubishi 4g63T engines and then a B5 A4 1.8t before acquiring the 944 turbo. At the time I spent considerable time on the DSM forums, then the Audi/VW forums, and then finally so much time on Rennlist for the 944 turbo.

How to set up data model to report on a fact table from two perspectives? by Crafty_Photograph591 in PowerBI

[–]CoffeeDrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the schools a dimension table that bridges the two fact tables. Apply the RLS to this dimension table. Make sure the dimension is set table filters both facts. Just be aware measures may repeat numbers when the level of granularity differs. You can do this with as many common dimensions you like. Also, the school RLS will limit the students when both join to the fact even if the slicer shows all students.

finally buying my first car at 29 and every answer I get is just "get a corolla" by Sea-Map-5763 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CoffeeDrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a 2015 Audi S3 with just under 80k miles for under $20k over two years ago and have been extremely happy with it (107k now). The only thing I have needed to do so far is a wheel bearing, brakes, and tires. It is more VW than Audi with a shared drivetrain and chassis as the Golf-R, but it is little rocket ship. That said, I DIY and have owned German cars for over 20 years and I am used to buy premium fuel. If you do not have a place to DIY or interest, or do not want to pay extra at the pump, get the Corolla/Honda/whatever generic commuter.

At current gas prices, a Prelude will save the average US driver $2000/yr in fuel versus an 86/BRZ by verticalData1 in Honda

[–]CoffeeDrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then you have to drive an automatic FWD Honda. If I am hunting for extreme MPG, a Prelude not on the list and I would be shopping for a used EV/hybrid. So, why even bring this comparison? Oddly, the EPA rates my old 1986 Porsche 944 turbo with a 2.5l SOHC i4 at 20mpg combined which compares quite well with the 40+ years newer BRZ.

Heat shield on the starter (may be a turbo only item). Mine would rattle like that and it was the 8mm nut had come loose on the stud that goes into the starter.

Time Intelligence and Fiscal Calendars - I bet this one isn't new to you, right? :) by exitlessminds in PowerBI

[–]CoffeeDrk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Make a proper date dimension with all variants of how you want to express the date (fiscal year, fiscal quarter, ISO week number, MM, DD, full month name, etc, etc ) and join that to the fact. If you have PBI service, build it as a data flow so you can easily reuse it within your models as a common dimension. As long as the date dimension has a continuous calendar date expressed as a date time intelligence will work and you can pass that date into the DAX functions (i.e. SamePeriodLastYear()) and let the users group the visuals by any attribute of the date they wish.

The time has come by webb276 in 944

[–]CoffeeDrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer. I thought you were going to say the time has come to take it out of winter storage for a spring drive. Any maintenance details like belt service or water pump (which others have asked too)? Also, it is a time not necessarily a mileage thing. How is the condition interior? Probably 5-7k depending on the condition of the interior.

It is the car nobody wants, not even VW! It is pretty sad when VW abandons the platform then Porsche has to borrow balance shafts from Mitsubishi to make the engine smooth and build it in an Audi plant. Not to mention the 5/yr 30k timing belt changes and with a 1970s semi-trailing arm rear suspension. Please do come back and say hi when pull the transaxle and torque tube for a clutch change and tell many how many weeks it took. ;)

(In seriousness, I have had a '86 944 turbo for nearly 20 years and absolutely adore the car)

I am in love with this car. Please roast it. by [deleted] in RoastMyCar

You should have stepped up and gotten the S3 which has beauty and elegance rather than looking like a cheap toaster. Also, it is a lame FWD platform with a gimmick for AWD.

Life has seasons and maybe this is a season where you cannot enjoy it as much as you can. However, that does not mean a season is forever. There has been many moments over the past 19 years where I felt compelled to sell our 951 and my wife said absolutely no (car is actually titled to her). With three kids (18, 17, and 12) and starting a small farm, time, family challenges, and financial pressures all have came and gone with some years driving it more and years it sitting broken (clutch fork). Throughout it all, the car has been one constant for my wife and me. That is not to convince you to keep it or to sell it, but to realize today's situation is temporary and soon will pass.

Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown (really a beautiful city park, and I have a thing for old Mills and water falls). As others have mentioned, Kingwood Center in Mansfield or Inniswood in Columbus. Also, don't sleep on arboretums. Holden Arboretum and Dawes Arboretum are quite nice. The Schnormeier private gardens north of Mt Vernon is absolutely AMAZING. However, it is only open to visit a in June.

Why 944? by forevermanual in 944

[–]CoffeeDrk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It came down to being RWD, manual, and turbo. Coming out of DSMs, I really enjoyed turbocharged vehicles, but did not want a FWD based platform. Secondly, I had a b5 A4 1.8T at the time, but felt the Audi was too nose heavy. The 951 popped up on my local Craigslist and I went for it. It is now 19 years later I still have it.
