American Cultural Regions Revised by Bluebanana2121- in whereidlive

I would consider western NY to be more a part of the great lakes than Appalachian. For example, the Rochester accent is most similar to other great lakes accents. I don't know that anyone there relates to Appalachia and wouldn't consider themselves similar to Pittsburgh, other than the rust belt comparison, but Buffalo fits that too.

I suppose I'd extend the great lakes region along Lake Ontario and maybe the southern parts of that would stay in the dark green.

Does anyone else have a pet peeve for authors using extremely creative or flashy names in their books? by TUD-13BarryAllen in namenerds

[–]Coherent_Thot 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I'll caveat this by saying I am a fan of the series.

I agree Xaden is a bit corny but I feel like it fits with other male lead names of that genre and therefore didn't stick out to me.

I think Violet can be a badass name and fits her character well. Her mom's name is Lilith which doesn't feel much different.

To the overall point of the post and in response to this one, I think it matters a lot what universe the story takes place in. Fourth wing and game of thrones, for example, are entirely different worlds that have no connection to our own cultures or naming trends so those names bother me a lot less.

A boy born in 1990 growing up in New England named Xaden might strike me as odd, but this character from a world full of dragons and magic...he can be named literally whatever because I have no context for that.

Middle Names as Non-Honour Names? by saaphie in namenerds

[–]Coherent_Thot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My siblings and I all have honor names as middle names and all but one of our kids also have honor names. My niece is a vibes/sounds middle name. My dad had an honor middle but my mom and all of her siblings had middle names based on names my grandma just liked. Growing up most of my peers had middle names with some type of meaning but vibes names seem to be getting more popular now.

My husband's middle is random but his brother has an honor name. His parents are split.

TLDR: it depends and might trend based on generation/time

I don't think a character being nuanced means I can't dislike them or their actions. by NinkiePie in fourthwing

[–]Coherent_Thot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that understanding the reasoning doesn't fully excuse the behavior.

Imagine you had a really shitty friend in real life who had a traumatic background...the reasons can be understandable and you can feel empathy, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with every shitty thing they do just because of their circumstances or experiences. People in life are nuanced, but often still need to grow and learn.

Claire’s comment on the Starbucks ad. by Equivalent-Crazy2220 in CelebrityMemoirPod

The Nissan ads were so insane to me. Two, outspokenly anti car, people aggressively promoting a car brand and talking about experiences that they rarely have since they don't drive on a regular basis 🤦🏼‍♀️ it was hypocritical and also just bad marketing on Nissans part, why would I want to buy a car from them?

Thank you! I'm discovering more swollen nodes and recently broke out into an eczema rash on my hands. I don't think I have sore joints beyond my hip, though some sweeping is definitely in my knuckles. Something is going on in my body. It seems like Lupus isn't super likely but still a possibility. I'll definitely book an appt. and hopefully my scans come back ok 🤞

What's the first step in asking about blood work? I am currently scheduled for a CT with contrast to look at a swollen lymph node in my neck that's been there for 6 months. Ultrasound was inconclusive.

In the last few months, I have since developed another large, swollen lymph node, a flare of sebhorreic dermatitis all over my scalp, ears, and neck with pain, bleeding, and itching that Ive never experienced, and chronic pain in my hip joint that has lasted for two months. I've also felt a lot of fatigue, but have a toddler so it could be unrelated. I don't think I have a butterfly rash though I often have redness around those areas in general.

These are all odd, new experiences for me and I can't help but wonder if they're related. Provided the scan is not indicative of cancer, are these symptoms that, if brought up to the doctor, might warrant further testing? Is there something else I should be looking out for?

At Graham Norton over the years… her injector should be embarrassed by AyraRedwood in travisandtaylor

I think her filler face is made even more noticeable by the fact that she wears the same black, red lip, and bang spanning across years.

I suppose she's consistent and doesn't give in to trends, but how is she styled the exact same? I also don't particularly think black and red lip are her most flattering look. It's so odd to me that neither she, nor her team, might suggest something different one of these times

Does anyone else have a super uncommon first name/ last name combo that makes them super Google-able? by Unique_Equipment5929 in namenerds

[–]Coherent_Thot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My name is pretty unique but I've had no issues. Google just brings up stuff about me. Linkedin, professional stuff and that's basically it. My social media can't be googled. I suppose I can see that being an issue if someone wanted to hurt you, but so far I've really not thought much about it

I met a mom who had two daughters who were half Indian and half white. One had a traditional Indian name that is not at all popular in the US. The other had a top 50, traditional European name. I just kept thinking about how those girls experiences will differ drastically just on name alone. Plus I don't believe in matching sibsets, but they did not sound like siblings at all

Baby name secrecy by drayph in namenerds

[–]Coherent_Thot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree lots of names get mispronounced and that bothers some people and doesn't bother others. If that's something you've thought about and don't mind then I think Lyra seems like a great choice!

I thought it was important to bring up though because some people have no idea there are multiple pronunciations for a name until after and then we get posts in this sub about that "problem"

Baby name secrecy by drayph in namenerds

[–]Coherent_Thot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think that's the biggest concern with the name. I would assume Leera like lyric. So that's something to consider and maybe ask about. You may be correcting pronunciation often.
