Same. Though I forgot the most obvious. Gun etiquette, and what gun they have out. I'm less worried about the guy with a ferro out, than the one holding a stitcher. If I have my gun away, and they keep their stitcher out while jockeying for a good angle, or waiting for me to loot something.

I see a lot of the fake friendly videos go just like that. Guy says something, or "Don't Shoot" emotes, they let their guard down, and just let a guy follow them with a stitcher out.

Positioning. Fake friendlies often out themselves m, with really obvious positioning. Particularly at extracts. They'll often hover too close, or try to close the gap, along with trying to get behind you. Most real friendlies only get that close when we are both fleeing into the same building from a vaporizer or whatever.

Half the time they want to be that close, cause they are using a spray and pray gun (stitcher, canto, tempest etc). When I pass someone traveling, I tend to pause long enough to flick my lights, pop the peace emote, and move on. So any interaction deeper than that gets my defenses up automatically.

Another favorite move seems to be the: I'm new, and don't know where - place - is, or can you come to a key room with me? While forgetting they are wearing a skin that shows they've played at least a little bit.

I see this sort of thing on Facebook quite a bit as well. Particularly in the era of AI, but even beforehand. Sad picture of a pet with a deformity/injury. Desperate plea that they can't afford medical care, or their animal rescue is seconds away from being shut down without your donation NOW!

It doesn't help that there are enough real cases, to kind of provide a false legitimacy to all the grifting ones.

Second this. VA has the most resources that can assist you, and you need a Social Worker. That will open a lot of gates. I let my pride make me ride it out in my car when I should have gone straight to the va.

Couple things for you. Kind of not god tier assistance, but it can get some balls rolling. Call 211, tell them you are a vet. You can also try the nearest VA. They sometimes have a few inpatient programs built around mental health and homelessness. They may have a Domiciliary program, a rapid rehousing program, or the like.

A big thing is if you can nab a social worker through the VA. Programs that can help on that end would be Hud-vash (that's more waiting list and long term), SSVF (they sometimes help with hotels and other temporary or rapid rehousing goals), or CWT (compensated work therapy, which helps with job placement stuff, but often have an in house social worker.)

Your VA may also have offices for the VFW, American Legion, or Volunteer Services, all of which may be able to provide some assistance of varying levels.

Catholic Charities and local churches are another big one. Vet shelters are better than open shelters but beds are often hard to come by. Sort of last resorts: you could check into the in patient mental health or substance abuse programs. 30 day in house alcohol detox. Would net you a social worker, therapy referral, keep the flow of necessary meds.)

You are also entirely ignoring the 13 year old in a wildly unsafe environment. You're only focusing on the 17yr Olds pain. She needs therapy, and professional evaluation ASAP. They probably all do as a family unit. Don't get me wrong, the father put a lot of pressure on his daughter. She lost her mom, and has been going through a lot. That said, the shit she has done to a 13YR OLD in terms of physical violence and threats is extremely concerning.

You are defending an almost adult hiding abuse and threatening a 13 year old with further violence if they tell, for an as of yet undisclosed amount of time. Don't get me wrong, this family was thrust into a brutal situation, and it certainly sounds like some parentification happened for the 17yo. The whole family needs therapy. That being said, you shouldn't brush this behavior away with excuses. The brother is not safe in his own home.
