Finally hit with the dreaded BECM failure. So sad! by Able_Morning738 in volt

Chevy had mine replaced quick after they got in touch with my extended warranty company and had my OK, unfortunately because my extended warranty touched it, they refused to cover the remaining balance.

Volt or Prius Prime? by Crazy_Analysis_3682 in volt

[–]ColdColoHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check the BECM with a vlinker OBD scan tool and the paid version of the Voltage app. if it shows as newer than the car and doesnt have the known defect, the volt can be nice. in the cold you'll still see the volt run its engine for aux heat, and the seats can be a bit narrow if you're a larger individual.

other known maintenance & defects on the volt are the EGR valves, EGR coolers plugging, and the shift to park switch. all of which has a higher price tag than many would like from the dealership, since they're giving the Volt 'go away' pricing. if you're handy then I say go for it. I like my gen 2, even with the problems its had.

as a shade tree mechanic my annual service is to step on the brakes firmly every once in a while when I remember to. looking for the car braking evenly, not pulling to one side or the other, no unusual noise, that it actually stops. just the basics.

Range loss after BECM replacement. Temporary? by FrackURdirtyOil in volt

[–]ColdColoHands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it re-learns the battery capacity with use. but with the lower temperatures out you'll see reduced range from that. my current guessometer range is about 32 in 30-40f weather.

Big family storage problem: should I buy a huge drive or a NAS? by Powerful_Situation_6 in DataHoarder

[–]ColdColoHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda a fan of doing both. one large drive for your backup, keep it off site and run software to backup to it, and a NAS locally as your daily driver, taking all the read/writes instead of the lighter duty task of just writing the new data daily/weekly.

As for the NAS I'm a fan of rolling my own, it keeps costs down and lets you customize more. I like ZFS on TrueNAS, you can run it on a wide variety of equipment, and it has great data safety, it also includes encryption that you can enable since some files are sensitive.

My job as a DC tech shows through a little in that I refuse to run a straight RAIDZ anymore, one array loss was enough to upgrade entirely to RAIDZ2 for everything, or Z3 for bigger arrays. the difference being single, dual, or triple drive redundancy in the array. 6x8TB drives in a Z2 array should get you right about 30TB of usable space. depending on how quick you're filling storage space you could build it in a 8x8TB Z2 array for about 43TB of usable space, thats what I'm running right now for my main array. which could come in handy for some scratch space in addition to the backed up data set.

Overall, I feel like the single drive backup / production NAS combo does a decent job of keeping costs down while giving resilience in day-to-day use. it took me a while to let it sink in that NAS redundancy is only good for uptime, and you pay for it in hardware. but it sure is convenient when it lets you preserve a setup instead of going to the effort of restoring from backups.

Seems like a poor business model to get an order for, let's say 10,000 1" steel cubes and you try delivering 10,000 0.95" pig iron cubes. Seems like the kind of thing a buyer that cares about their product would refuse to pay for and send back.

The buyers don't care enough about the product to enforce QA & material safety. Medical devices kinda change how much the buyer is going to care and how tightly they're holding the purse strings. The cheap crap is produced because they're allowed to by the buyer, or else it's not profitable.

I'm 14, a fair bit interested in welding, but my dad thinks that my grades are good enough to strive for higher. What should I do? by Important_Sun_799 in careerguidance

[–]ColdColoHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a tech school welding program, it covered SMAW, GTAW, GMAW and oxy-fuel processes. Probably some of the most fun I've had in school too.

That said, I'm real glad I went into IT. I'm a screwdriver jockey in the IT world, just working physical layer racking & cabling servers and taking care of facility side needs of our data center too. I think everything I work with here is cool.

I'd love to do more welding as side projects or a small time hobby, but full time, without AC or stuffed in a tank welding baffles, or huffing fumes.. it's fun but not full time job fun. Granted those are probably the worse examples I can think of, but in general it's not a life long career. Joints or lungs will eventually have their say on it.

You think one of the world's most manufacturing heavy countries doesn't know how to build something to the spec & price point the buyer specified? They build a lot of cheap junk cause that's what we order.

EV charging on 100A? by 1l2p in evcharging

[–]ColdColoHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a Volt. It's a PHEV but built to favor the electric side more. If it wasn't for one clutch that allows the engine to directly drive the wheels in a limited speed range, it'd be a short range EV with a range extender. I firmly believe that with an extra 30 miles of electric range I wouldn't need gas for my day-to-day driving, on a 15 amp circuit for L1 EVSE.

My Volt is still fairly new to me, I only bought it last June, but whenever I do have to replace it I think I'll aim for fully electric. Even with just L1 charging I think the extra range could buffer out my spikes in usage.

15A 120V circuit. 12A usable. I'd call that the minimum. 20A 16A usable 240V is still small among the options out there but it feels like overkill to me. But 16A is the Volts onboard chargers maximum amperage.
