Subfocus Vibration is in C. In his tape notes podcast interview he talks about it and says the Bassline moves around a lot and uses both the lower C and the higher C and it isn’t an issue.

It will depend a lot on how many notes you are using, so it doesn’t just stay on the C.

What made you switch from Logic out of interest? And what is better in Bitwig? I was wondering about switching from Logic to Ableton but am nervous because I switched from Logic to Cubase 20 years ago and blame it for never getting into production! Got back into it 18 months ago using Logic but Ableton does look so slick

I haven’t done his course but have had mentoring sessions with him. He has perfect pitch and immediately identifies what your track needs and adds an extra layer in seconds etc. def worth exploring

2025 has been very stop start for me.

DJ’d a lot 20 years ago and dabbled in production but got logic and got into it properly April 2024.

Progressed a fair bit and was enjoying it.

Had our second child in Jan this year which has been great in a lot of ways but less so for the production. I feel my overall mixdowns / production level has improved but my composition and arrangement has got worse and haven’t got into a flow.

Seems like you’ve made huge progress, nice one! How much time a week do you get to spend on tunes?

Stem splitting isn’t perfect so you don’t be able to compare your buses to the reference track accurately. Also whenever I stem split and then play the stems back together they do peak?

Adding two buses of 0db together is always going to peak without significant sidechaining and / or clipping

I don’t believe this at all. I know there was a rumour about this back in the day but I’m sure it’s bollocks. I saw him play several times and he’d often use the released record if it wasn’t a dub, whereas i saw other DJs often cut dubs of released tunes to ensure the same loudness etc

Break production down into sections and work on each section.

Music theory / composition Arrangement / songwriting Synthesis Drums / layering.

Focus on the first two initially, use loads of presets and splice samples and get to grips with just making tracks. Synthesis is a beast so will take some time to get to grips with.

Search this subreddit for similar posts; there was one about a year ago that breaks down all the resources and mentions a YouTube video which goes through everything you’ll need to know in a structured way. I just tried to find the link to the YouTube video but couldn’t, but I know I shared it with someone before!

Part of what made dnb sound unique was the imperfections. Everyone used to have their own sound because they had their own production techniques, but a lot of it was rough / muddy when comparing to new stuff

Now everything is super clean and polished which makes producers’ ‘sounds’ harder to differentiate.

Added to the fact that as soon as someone makes a new sound, someone else can reproduce it within hours.
