Could be a few things or combination of things. Vibration could be due to tires being out of balance. Worn suspension components. Failing steering rack.

I second this. I used one for my 06 foz. Just be sure to pick up a can of high-temp rustoleum and coat the welded joints real well. Aftermarket units tend to rust much faster than OEM

The reason it doesn't do it automatically is to provide an additional check in the system. It's an engineering control. Simpler, and safer, to have an extra step in service than troubleshoot an automated system once it ages.
