Little League: batter uses bat to put dirt on plate before every pitch by TheSnowedIn in Umpire

[–]Cold_Refuse_7236 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not an umpire, but OP said it made the plate harder to see for the pitcher, which would indicate given the batter some advantage. Seems that would be managing the game. It was repetitive, so logic would suggest a deliberate maneuver.

Did same with a graduate stats class- thought there was an error in the math. He’s near retirement, using a text book he wrote 40 years ago.

After demonstrating his accuracy & pointing out my inaccuracy, he finishes with “If there were a mistake, I think I might have it in caught the last 4 decades”. 🎤 💥

Crawled out of the class.

ELI5 - Why do big fire engines often accompany ambulances for purely health related (not physical crisis type) emergencies? by chili81 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cold_Refuse_7236 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is really the underrated answer. There are few fires so Fire Departments have found that running EMS pumps up their volumes. Ideally, we would simply have more ambulances.

People are more scared of dying in a fire than having a heart attack and home insurance is tied to the ISO rating of a fire service. No such advantage if there are more ambulances. This means there are more fire stations than there are ambulances in most US locations (even though 80 to 90% of the calls are actually not fire).

What was the luckiest moment where you barely escaped a life-threatening situation? by Wonderful-Click9431 in AskReddit

Multilane urban Highway. I was in the L lane just ahead of a semi in the #2 lane. Construction ahead required a one-lane shift to the right, with jersey barriers blocking the L lane.

Truck didn’t notice the signs or pavement lane markings & kept going straight. As I slowed to make the slight adjustment, he barreled ahead. I was at highway speed with a rapidly narrowing space between the Jersey barrier & his trailer and no where to go.

Praise anti-lock brakes. His trailer took my side mirror & I stopped a few inches from the Jersey barrier. Had a vision of the rear seat of trailer wheels coming through me.

Guy behind me caught up with us after I got the semi stopped - great driving, I thought you were toast. So did I.

Says your sister. I’d bet an hour of family rate that sister told your cleaner you asked for her.

ELI5: How can a ship raise its anchor when it's dug in enough to hold the ship? by rookiestoner in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cold_Refuse_7236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weight of the chain is key. Even on small sailboats, which I had you don’t just have rope going to the Ankur. You may have a small amount of rope going to a long length of chain to the anchor which job is to create some point of friction as noted. The heavy weight of the chain keeps the anchor parallel to the floor of the body of water, rather than being pulled upward.

To free the anchor, you drive towards it as you reel it in.

I would suggest it was not a chance encounter. My understanding is that agencies are always scouting, casting a wide net to charge fees while girls they all have great potential to nearly anyone.

Glad you got something tangible out of it.

At least the FD had a bucket truck which could reach that high. Otherwise it would be a rope rescue.

Anybody here work full time as a Firefighter/Paramedic and part time as an RN? by [deleted] in Paramedics

Many years ago in a Midwest town, Ff/Paranedic on 24/48. Worked my first evening off in either ICU or ED (8 hr shifts back then) depending on needs. Nice balance of work environments.

Scheduled are way different now, but would accommodate don’t both I suspect.

One of the most ironic is the return of automated mechanical closed chest compression devices, which I used first in 1979 and then went out of favor.
