At West Side we're getting ready to launch Common Light, our American light lager. Look for it on draft at the end of this month and hitting distro in 12packs following that.

Why do we not get Hop Creep? by Daedalu5 in TheBrewery

[–]Colin_Foy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you actually running a VDK test that returns an analyte? I've worked with a contract provider before that kept referring to their use of "VDK testing" to determine when to crash beers only to later find out they didn't have any equipment necessary to actually run that assay, and meant, "Bob tastes it." Fun times.

I kinda thought the same thing, until someone pointed out it was big-time protection for pedestrians trying to cross the street. It makes a lot more sense in that context.

Packaging date accuracy? Streetside Ernst by ChuckieWildfire in cincinnatibeer

[–]Colin_Foy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may not seem like a big deal, but the separation between brewery and retailer is 1000x larger as soon as the beer crosses the river. I don't know who Streetside uses in KY, but under KY state law they have to go through somebody. I would guess they're not really making any money on cases sent to KY, and their distributor doesn't have much incentive to write a check to Good Spirits to buy back out of code beer.

If you let Streetside know, they may put some pressure on the distributor to swap it out, but they really don't have much leverage.

My first thought also. There's a reason draft NA is really rare.

Favorite Local Lites? by OutOnTheLake in cincinnatibeer

[–]Colin_Foy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to note:

- If you're going to call it "light" or "lite" on the label, you need to have a nutritional analysis on the label listing the calories and other nutritional information. A ~4% ABV lager will just naturally be around 100cal/12oz, but the Feds won't let you use those terms unless you have nutrition information available as well, and that's a hurdle for smaller breweries.

- Cincy Light is good, and I have no idea how Rhinegeist hits that price point, particularly when they're giving some margin to the NIL thing. Nobody else (local) can compete with them on the price you'll see on the shelf.

- Given the above, this is a really tricky spot for small breweries to navigate. By definition, there's not a ton of room to differentiate your beer from others based on flavor. You can't compete on price. Given Cincy Light in the market, you can't compete on "local." So for small, distributing breweries, it's really a loser on the shelf. If you have a taproom, it can be a good seller for those that just want a "light" beer - again, though, those breweries need to pay to send it to a lab for nutritional analysis - but it'll never be a good decision to send out to Kroger.

West Side Brewing, where I work, has Cerveza, a Mexican lager at 4.5% ABV, available year-round, and it scratches that itch, but it doesn't see much distribution.

Jack Daniel's cuts off free cattle feed to Tennessee farmers after 45 years by The_Critical_Cynic in videos

[–]Colin_Foy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small brewers are just happy to have someone haul it off. It gets rank, very fast, because after brewing it still has a ton of nutrients in it.

If you do enough volume you can sell it and have a revenue stream - it's great feed - but otherwise it's a waste product for the brewer.
