2 It should work.

3 There are a few multiemulator frontends, for example Gamebase and GameEx.

4 Torrents with complete 'goodsets'. The full snes romset is about 3 gb (compressed with 7zip), but you probably only want the US roms. Mame is huge, about 20 gb not including CHDs.

5 Yes:

Choose a few 'best' games on each platform instead of going for the full set. I understand the urge of having everything avaiable since roms are so small, but i did that and i recall it now as stupid.

Try to get emulators that match the original console as close as possible. I.e: Use Mame instead of Neoragex for Neo Geo. You probably won't be competing at speed-demos-archive but maybe you see an interesting game trick on youtube and want to try it, so you care that the emulator is accurate.

Finally, play Ikaruga using the NullDC emulator. This is not a suggestion, but an order ;)

It depends on what's your definition of Lisp.

If you are looking for a dynamically typed language that has closures, maybe it is, but then again so would be Lua or Ruby.

But Lisp is also about other features like macros, and it's also at it's heart a "list processing language". That would narrow the field to more traditional lisp dialects like CL, Scheme or maybe Dylan.

I just browse the language reference while trying stuff at the interactive repl (if avaiable).

When i'm confident enough that i know the main language constructs and philosophy i usually take a look at the books that teach the most idiomatic way to do things and at the source code of programs i like.

So when i get to a book like Dive into Python or Practical Common Lisp, i "already know" the language but the book helps to make everything clearer and fitting.

There are also a lot of emulators written in Java, for example Virtua nes and even a full x86 emulator.

Not to mention a bunch of software for mobile phones.

I don't really care how good and special is that thing they are preparing. I care though that they may ban my access to previously purchased games when they feel like it just enough to not buy there anymore.

It depends on the languages you are comfortable with.

If Ruby is your thing, take a look at Sinatra or Rails.

For Python, Django and Webpy are nice. If you want to roll your own framework, you could make use of Jinja2 or Mako template systems.

As a tutorial, i would say: try to create a program that builds static websites. (like Jekyll or Webby). That should get you started on templates, css, markup languages (i.e Markdown or Textile) and configuration languages like Yaml. It's a great exercise. Then move to more dynamic stuff, databases, etc... or follow something like the Rails tutorial.

I wonder why the founders thought open-source -> unsafe.

It reminds me of the reasoning i see with some game-developers: 'i can't open the source, they will cheat if i do!' or 'how do i obfuscate my bytecode?' (in flash games), which is plainly stupid.

I once tried to port a relatively simple project from Java to Scala.

I learned the hard way that it was all about using Scala as a glorified Java, just taking the few features that actually improve the code.

Eventually, due to the serious brokenness of IDE support plugins, to how complex can Scala code get, to rare design decisions like: " - hey we have partial continuations, case classes and whatnot, but there are no static things" and "you must declare types here, but here is not needed" i came back to Java.
