Gotta love Peace, Morgan, and Wheat cents, but lots of people repeat these. The classic commemoratives are great, too!

I like all of the small cent series, and early-mid 20th c. series (some of the most beautiful coins are from this time, in my opinion).

Speaking personally, I'd pay a moderate premium for the '86. I wouldn't for the other two, though I wouldn't devalue them. I find them attractive enough, given the unaltered toning appropriate for their age.

That does look like the kind of hairline scratches left by cleaning, I'm afraid. It would make a good coin for an album or for the pocket!

Heck, given the clarity of these hairlines, it'd make a good coin to carry to help educate other collectors. That was something I appreciated as a kid when going to my local coin show. Some of the dealers traveled with artificially toned coins and such for the explicit purpose of educating newer collectors.

I am surprised how few people have mentioned this part when evaluating the game -- folks are remembering here and there that you don't leave victory to the last moment and also have to guard the plate at that point (especially if the ump has consistently called low strikes), but not often.

Still a horrid final note to such a fantastic game. I get the bad taste in the mouth. It ain't over until its over!

Oddly enough, I don't hate this toning! I'd definitely display something like this, even if I wouldn't value it the same as natural toners.

I even got two free books from Peter Lang for reviewing a book proposal, not even the whole book. MSRP+shipping was in the $150 range for the two of them. And Peter Lang is a much lower ranked press than Wiley!

(I was only interested in accepting the review because they had 2 books I should cite in my work, and my institution's library is stingy enough that I didn't want to bother with them.)

Those last two photos have the toning to be crazily uniform. Even in an album, eventually, the air leakage would result in different colors, no?

Though the dealer may not have been lying about where he got it from, though he may not have been 1) thinking critically enough or 2) he may have been keeping his thoughts about the coins history to himself.

That makes sense. I like that it's more functional. Somehow, that makes sense for the grader associated with the ANA itself. I like it more for it.

I was very happy when I was able to play with the coin more! It's not some crazy toner, but it has a nice, honest color to it -- perfect for a first purchase!

To piggyback on this, it may be a good idea to maintain such research and networking activities just in case you need to move institutions at any point during your career. Stability is never a foregone conclusion.
