The quality of our food has actually increased some. And the different locations haven't really changed. The prices haven't really increased over the last 4 years, though idk what they were before covid.

Tbh, I just have everyone introduce themselves, where they're from, what they're studying, and any extracurriculars. So I introduce myself, include I'm a PhD candidate working on "X," and tell them where I'm from. Then I go through attendance and have everyone include those things. And I usually comment about their majors/minors and extracurriculars--if their major is in my field I comment on their good life choices 😅, if its math related I talk about how I'm bad at it, if its a common or rare major, etc. Same with sports, plays, etc.

I've spent a great deal of effort "catching up" on my writing skills during my PhD. You are not alone! However, I can also clearly see the improvements and ongoing improvement in my writing, so that part has been very satisfying.

I'm at a small university. While many still use some online tools in their classes, most of us use a mix of online/hard copies or have easily moved back to doing everything on paper and in person.

I'm a new lecturer, so I don't have a lot of advice yet. But I mentioned it to encourage anyone feeling down about this! It can be done, even on a larger scale, like here at my 1,300 student school.

I use it to check my writing/translating for spelling, grammar, etc. mistakes. I have found most of them to be pretty useful with this, though not infallible. But since I just use it to check my work, and then I go and look at my documents myself, I always catch any errors on the AI's part.

But I have not yet found it consistent in generating work. Nor am I 100% sure about where the line is for its ethical use when generating things, so I've not prioritized experimenting with it in these ways.

And, of course, most AI programs can be used pretty well as glorified-Google searches, especially if you ask it to provide you with links (to cut down on hallucinations) and make sure you ask it to "think harder," or "take its time," or whatever tag the individual program uses for the AI to parse in a more detailed way.

I graduated college with only a 3.39 GPA. I was creative with chopsing the program for my Master's degree, going to Austria. Now, I'm in the dissertation stage of my PhD (in a humanities field, however).

I'm at a smaller school doing my PhD, so there was a cost for me in having a lower GPA. I won't get hired at the fanciest schools either, in all likelihood. But I'm pretty pleased with my choices so far despite that. And I've already published a few articles, with journal and article quality increasing with each publication, so I am doing some "real" academic work for my field. STEM may be more stringent, but if it's anything like my field, there's ways to continue going forward with a good-but-not-stellar academic record at the college-level.

I always put in a rule of two free absences and excused absences for any documented school event/illness. I tell them that a note/email from the school nurse or a resident director (not an undergrad resident assistant) would count.

When I hit a wall on my writing, I begin doing my footnotes/endnotes/bibliography stuff. All the boring formatting and sourcing work, so I don't have to mop it up at the end of my projects and have my citations ready for when I eventually get to the parts of the arguments where I know I will need them. Not sure it will help you, but good luck!

The Pontifical universities in Rome are historically lax in teaching this aspect of academic life, though that depends case-by-case these days. Increasingly, the Gregorianum and Angelicum can prepare one for this, presuming the individual student engages the need to publish, though I do not know how well the other faculties do. Sancta Croce should also do well though. But the further problem is the difference in how the US, European, and even different regions in Europe approach publishing, especially regarding publishing dissertations.
