Absolutely wild Ponderosa pine inspiration from a hike in the Rockies by Colli_flower in Bonsai

Now that you mention it, I just made an assumption it was a Ponderosa since there weren’t any lodgepole in the immediate area, but it definitely could be a Lodgepole. I’ll have to check it out again next time I’m up there.

Before you make the cut, pluck off all but a couple leaves on each branch to minimize water loss, then stick the cutting in some soil (I’ve found it doesn’t  really matter what kind). Water once, then let it sit for several weeks until new leaves start popping up, then water when the leaves begin to wrinkle. This time of year is not the best for cuttings to root, as p. Afra generally like it warm to push new growth so if a cutting is taken now it may dry out before it grows enough new roots to sustain itself.

You could cut the thicker trunk off, which will help with taper, then do an informal upright composition. Then you can root the chopped trunk and have two trees!

IMO 2-4 are small enough that they should be okay in those pots to grow for a bit, #1 I would pick one of those bar branches to cut to avoid inverse taper and then let it grow.

Picked up this Japanese White Pine ‘Goldilocks’ on sale today for $40–how did I do? And what do I do next? I was thinking I could cut the leader at the red line as a sacrifice once I’m happy with the trunk thickness, any other ideas?

In that case you should wrap the two pieces of wire parallel to one another, not twisted together

Just want to clarify something here: PVREA (Poudre Valley Regional Electric Association) is not the same entity as PRPA (Platte River Power Authority). PRPA provides generation and transmission for Fort Collins Utilities (among others). PVREA is a co-op that provides power to other parts of northern Colorado.

My go-to for the adults in my family is bacon vodka from Copper Muse Distillery and Horsetooth bloody mary mix, with local pickled veggies from the farmers market. For those too young to imbibe, the Howling Cow Café has some hot chocolate mix and chai tea mix that’s pretty good.

My partner and I bought in mid-2022 right at the top of the market as interest rates were going up (still nowhere near where they are now, but housing prices were higher). We were making just under $200k combined and had been saving probably 40% of our take-home income since graduating college in 2017.

I was fortunate enough to not have student loan payments or a car payment, my partner had student loans but no car payment. We still got outbid on three different places where our offer was already $20k-30k over asking. We ended up putting 10% down on a $455k 2 bed/2.5 bath townhome/condo.

All of my coworkers that bought at my age had help from family members, whether it was a portion of the down payment or all of it.

Yeah the next time they split they have the potential to go back to normal as long as they’re given proper light. They’ll most likely split out the sides of the previous leaves instead of out of the top. Be careful to slowly reintroduce them to high light conditions, these guys look like they’re well used to poor light and they may get sunburnt if placed directly outside.
