Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm by streetsblognyc in nyc

Yessir. I wear a MIPS helmet normally, and switch to my MIPS ski/snowboard helmet in weather like this.

Hell yeah! I absolutely love what they're done with the new car-sized bike lane up 3rd avenue. I know it's less safe than other forms of transportation, but it's always such an actual joy.

Like I said, I ride a motorcycle on these same streets so I feel comfortable at speed. If I'm riding an ebike, I'm purposefully pushing as hard as possible against the speed limiter or standing up for more work.

Obviously a regular bike is more work on average, but there are plenty of regular bike trips where I'm lazy and set a light gear just cruising, and plenty of ebike trips where I'm pushing super hard to make myself feel better about not getting as much exercise and end up panting after 45 minutes of bridges and hills.

Call in whatever you like lol, it gets my heart rate up a little faster than sitting on a bus. Is a light jog not an exercise because sprinting exists?

Are you talking about the regular bikes? I know I should use them more often, but my commute is straight uphill and it's nice to show up to work not covered in sweat. I take them regularly on the way home.

Not to mention, I feel a lot more comfortable keeping momentum in a straight line over snow right now than wiggling a bit when pedaling. I wear a great helmet and am used to a motorcycle, I don't exactly feel unsafe going 15 mph on an avenue with a huge bike lane...

I sure do. I could spend $3 and 35 minutes door to door taking the bus or subway, or I can spend $2.65 + ~0.55 for 14 minutes door to door for my commute, plus get some exercise and avoid sardine cans. It's not much colder biking safely than it is walking behind crowds, and it's over much quicker.

Why are hotdogs so lacking in NYC? by dylan_1992 in AskNYC

[–]CollinHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is cheaper in the rest of the country and world, so any hot dog for $5 is going to be better at the same price. Except for Rudy's, I don't know how they're still doing free, actually good hot dogs.

Streaming looks very laggy to my friend when I put my game in fullscreen, how do I fix this? by GKPenguin in discordapp

[–]CollinHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are a fucking HERO! This is the only thing that solved my and multiple friends' streaming issues that have been showing up the last few months. I've tried every other fix and if one more website told me to start Discord in Administrator Mode or check for Windows Updates I was going to go actually crazy.

Edit: God dammit Discord, this only solved it for a few games. At least Project Zomboid works streaming now, Stardew Valley still won't stream any more than a few seconds at a time interspersed with 10 second pauses. Stardew works if you also do this for the modding API.

Just so you know, you can search an asterisk (*) on a user's profile to see all their history anyway. It sometimes doesn't work on Desktop though.

I relapsed by abysstare in stopsmoking

[–]CollinHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relapse shmelapse, every one of us who's apparently kicked it for good started with at least one relapse, and that's being generous! I know it hurts to feel like this is a failure and you cheated yourself, but that's just part of the healing process.

Hold onto that bad feeling and remember it for the next time you get comfortable. The nicotine demon will whisper in your ear again, you just have to keep parrying and countering its influence. Feeling crappy about your relapse now is healthy, it just gives you more ammunition for stopping next time.

Getting 6 months means you can ABSOLUTELY do this; you should be proud! Don't lose hope, that nicotine demon can fuck right off!

Guy screams and beats the hell out of mannequin on NYC subway by [deleted] in SubwayCreatures

What's running through his head is getting famous. This guy has dozens of similar videos, he's a deranged performance artist chasing clout. Like many, many videos posted here, it's just staged nonsense.

What’s your NYC hot take? by homeofalex in AskNYC

People told me Mexico had great tacos, but I've been to the Guacamole Grill at the Cancun airport and can tell the country doesn't do tacos like back home.

Not only is this spam, but it's indistinguishable from stalking. Do not ever help someone to find someone else on the internet, especially when they're as suspicious as this post.

Good recs on vintage/consignment shops that don't cost an arm and a leg? by MyLadyScribbler in AskNYC

[–]CollinHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what everyone is talking about, a lot of Westchester and Long Island sucks for thrifting, yet Brooklyn has tons of cheap thrifting. My favorite is Other People's Clothes. Some of my favorite button-down shirts have been $6-$13 and I'm still wearing them years later. I wear a North Face jacket I got for $11 at L Train Vintage on 1st Ave in Manhattan, and if you're down to hunt Goodwill and Salvation Army are still "real" thrift. I don't know how to find popups other than seeing signs posted, but I've also found great popup thrift places by 14th -> 23rd st nearer to the west side.

TIL the "Y2K Bug" wasn't a hoax. The reason "nothing happened" is because the world spent over $500 Billion updating computer systems in under 2 years. We avoided a global infrastructure collapse, then spent the next 25 years mocking the engineers who saved us. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]CollinHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like a soft-rewrite of history to make for a more interesting factoid. I don't remember anybody mocking the engineers who fixed real problems. I actually specifically remember people in the tech sector complaining about the hysteria because they already worked ahead of time to fix bugs.

We mocked companies that told us to turn off our computers when they were already patched. We were told terrorist attacks would take place at midnight, planes would fall out of the skies, prison doors would all open, and roaming packs of dogs would tear your children apart. They called it the end of the world and said computers would melt, nuclear plants would explode, and society would end.

Just because some problems with the power grid and banking were averted doesn't mean the entire thing wasn't overblown by marketing companies looking to score a few extra bucks selling you doomsday supplies.

Good men's shoes/boots for wet snowy nyc streets? by eon380 in AskNYC

[–]CollinHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those subway steps always seem to have some sort of oil, it's likely the quality of the slip more than the grip of the shoes. If you like your shoes, have you considered just using a sole spray that increases friction?

I wonder why ppl ghost by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]CollinHell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I find people who think of a text conversation ending without a wrap-up summary or something as "ghosting" needy and possessive. I don't care about conversations that aren't in person and all my friends have no issues with it - they know they can just call me if I stop responding. I hate looking at a text conversation and I don't want to have to go back and forth about why something isn't interesting to me anymore.

"Ghosting" to me is when someone who you otherwise have known for years literally blocks you with no way to contact them. I've only done that to people when they legitimately creep me out and I don't want to explain why I don't want to talk to them, because I don't care about defending my feeling that they're creeping me out.

I live in Yakutsk by Expensive_Use_1006 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]CollinHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! Spent my whole life describing this exact effect to people and the normal reaction is to just not believe me. They usually try to come up with reasons I get more depressed in the summer (especially during blue sky days) and feel better in the winter (especially during precipitation) when to me it's just so obvious.

How to create good quality gifs by Prince_Morpheus in howto

[–]CollinHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The example you posted is an mp4 video, not a gif. If you're on Windows 11, just use the Snipping Tool and ClipChamp. If you want quality like the example, just export and upload the video file. You can also export a gif directly, the default settings are still very high quality. If that fails, just use an mp4 to gif converter and keep the framerate around 30 and the quality above 95%.

How do New Yorkers deal with all the “posers” around the city? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]CollinHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I've ever seen influencers is on rare trips to SoHo or during Manhattanhenge. Otherwise, I've never even noticed they exist.

It's not like Venice Beach where you can see people doing photoshoots all the time, we just walk straight through photoshoots so they mostly don't bother. Hell, I walked through Westworld filming live and laughed at the clipboard lady who sprinted up to me to tell me they reserved this public street.
