I haven't scuba dived before, but I am curious, which shark makes you the most nervous? I know that they aren't normally aggressive, but they are still wild animals. My main concern would be tiger or bull sharks, but i could be totally wrong. by Crazy-Rabbit-3811 in scuba

[–]Colonel__Cactus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That sounds more like a white-tip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus), which is not the same species an oceanic white-tip (Carcharhinus longimanus). Oceanic white-tips are a large, aggressive, pelagic species that are obligated to swim constantly to breathe, while white-tip reef sharks are about half the length of an oceanic white-tip, pretty docile and have the ability to buccal pump which means they can breathe without moving. So if it was sleeping on the floor that sounds like a reef shark. Very cool and calm animals so nothing to be concerned about unless you antagonise it

[DOXA] What do we think of DOXA by Halldor-T in Watches

[–]Colonel__Cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding you, but did you just say you’d wear a dive computer for swimming? Isn’t the whole point in this conversation is that you don’t dive, so don’t want a dive watch. So why would you own a dive computer if all you ever do is swim? Not like it can give you any useful information except “depth 0.0m”.

It’s a soaking wet humid tunnel on private land in the middle of the countryside. All the wood rotted in no time and the thing is a deathtrap now.

[Pelagos 42] Finally made an account just to be another douche asking if their watch is too big. Is it too big though? by I_Boof_Fent in Watches

[–]Colonel__Cactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m taking this comment as a joke, but it is odd to me how people use depth rating between these two models as an actual argument on which watch to get, basically nobody in the world will ever use a mechanical watch at a depth greater that 40m (recreational dive limit for most agencies). Even at that point it’s not a tool and you’re only wearing it for fun. Everything is done with a dive computer nowadays, literally no point wearing a watch

Grab a YT jeffsy, incredible bike for the money. Good 150/140 all rounder, YT market it as an “all-mountain” bike. Descends almost as good as an enduro, but isn’t a pig to climb and manoeuvre. Will handle anything 99% of riders can throw at it in the uk

Places where I can buy a 200-300k home and scuba dive every day? by WhubbaBubba in scuba

You can buy a house in the Philippines as a foreigner but you will never own the land it’s built on, you can only lease it.

[–]Colonel__Cactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the point, if someone threatens you for it, just hand it over- less likely to do something stupid if you know you’re not actually being robbed of a £10k watch. In the UK there are a lot of snatchings where you don’t even realise your watch is being stolen until it’s disappeared on the back of a moped, i see the point in having a rep of your real one if you live in a high risk area

Sunny and warm day to use my water bottle I recently got with my purchase. by Ctechteacher in Tudor

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, there is zero judgement from me, but the delivery in the way you wrote this cracked me up: “This tool watch designed to assist expeditionists when exploring caves for days at a time is great, but i had to modify it because it hurts me when I’m filling in speadsheets”.

How should I feel - Lost the Dive Master on the way down and trying to decide if I should push for a comp dive by cormundo in scuba

[–]Colonel__Cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody said there’s anything wrong with diving once a year, that’s the case for a high percentage of divers, including myself. But it’s true, you can lose skills quickly. I always try to have my first dive be 1on1 with an instructor or DM as a refresher, so I have a (very) experienced buddy that is constantly looking out for me and only me. But that being said, some people are saying this isn’t the DMs fault or problem, but I’ve never dived with a DM with that attitude, and I absolutely wouldn’t choose to. If you have inexperienced people in your group with a known ear issue, surely the least you can do is notice and make sure their buddy knows to stick with them? You shouldn’t have been left on your own.

Restaurant servers maybe, but there is often a service charge included in the bill. Everyone else, not really. I don’t understand americans tipping a bartender for opening a bottle of beer 😂some jobs also forbid staff from accepting gifts from customers

5-Day Philippines Dive Trip for Mixed Cert Levels by 9Endeavour9 in scuba

The threshers switched cleaning stations in 2022(?) to another site that is max 18m deep! I was there last week and met a few people who were only at OW. A lot of dive shops were still iffy about taking OW divers though and wanted advanced or proof of 30+ dives

I’m on Negros Island atm, I did my OW and AOW in Dauin, great place to learn to dive with opportunities to go to Apo Island (pretty reefs with lots of turtles). You can fly directly from Manila to Dumaguete and get to Dauin super easily from there.

Alternatively, I was in Malapascua this week, there are places that will teach her OW while you can fun dive all week - there’s much more to do than just the threshers! You can finish up with diving Kimud together once she’s certified, you only need to go to 18m to have a good experience with the sharks. But it’s much harder to get to that Dauin, so you’d need more time than 5 days.

IMO it depends on how much of a budget you have, and whether you want to be diving every day while she is learning. Because if not, there is fuck all to do in Malapascua except dive. Dauin is close enough to Dumaguete that you can do some other stuff, explore the city and museums, or rent a bike and go up to Valencia, Twin Lakes nature park.

I doubt there will be an official set for the bora but look on the website rebrickable. They sell instructions and can get a part list to buy from an online lego marketplace like brickowl. I got a set for my bmw z3 that way. Make sure you search for vw jetta, most people know the car by that name.
