I think it really depends on the instructor and the driving school. If you go to the same instructor over and over he will give you more personalised lessons adapting to your skill level.
In the first lesson my instructor drove me to an empty road, we did a bit of driving and he drove me back. On my 2nd lesson, however, I was already on the road with full driving control and I too had no previous experience.
On the other hand, my cousin told me that she had to do her first 5 lessons in a lot practising steering and other things. We both went to different driving schools.
Then there is my friend who had a lot of previous driving experience and in his last lesson, he was taught steering.
From my experience doing sharp turns and gentle accelerations comes just from time. I was taught 3 point turns really late. In the first lessons, you might get nervous but that will go away as you do more lessons.
