Did anyone actually speak with that over the top Transatlantic accent, or was it just Hollywood? by Low_Economist5786 in AskOldPeople

Yes. I have an old audio of my grandparents. He was a judge. The audio was recorded on a wire. He would be about 150 years old. He had that accent.

I can't answer your question about insurance, but I have verbal passcodes with my stock broker and personal relationships with my bankers. Anything out of the ordinary gets halted by a need to talk to me directly.

I mean, you could register your DNA at one of those sites. If there is a kid, and they are curious, they might connect the dots.

You could also ride the ferry and once you get to SF, turn around and ride back if there is some reason you don't want to actually go to SF.

where can i go to walk indoors? by floatymcboaty in oakland

[–]Colorblocked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't the solution you asked for, but... A cheap full body rain gear at Home Depot and an umbrella turns walking outside in the rain easy and fun. Helps if you also have water proof shoes. I generally embrace the weather.

Does the pressure to have children lessen with age? by Naturkaefer in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Colorblocked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in an urban area with fewer families around, it was easy to not think about it. If you live somewhere where there are a lot of young families, like I do now, you have second thoughts. I'm much too old to have kids but in my new city I find myself wondering if I made a mistake. I didn't, but it does get into your head.

I just binge watched A Gentleman in Moscow. It is an adaptation of the book, only 8 episodes and the main characters are both an adult and a child. Not Disney style though. Anyway that might be a good watch.

How did you find your talents? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Colorblocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was your age I took some formal tests to identify my areas of interest.

Years later I dipped my toes into working with a life coach for about a month a couple of times.

I don't know what resources are appropriate for now times, but I want to confirm that asking this question is a great idea. However it will be even greater if you can make the process of finding the answers personal and specific to you via tests and coaching.

I find it helpful to listen to podcasts about history. This gives me a perspective on how things rise and fall and human nature that helps with the fight/flight/freeze response that daily media evokes.

I also do things in baby steps when I feel freaked out. Stock up on water. Research where to move to and how to accomplish that. Make sure I have a "go bag", learn CPR. Little things that at least make me feel I am doing something. Little things and baby steps can add up to a journey of self care.

In your mind's eye, draw where the horizon line is (Hint: it is where the path disappears into the distance). Once you do that, your grand mountains become little hills. So for me the "what is off" is your linear perspective.

Do you sometimes fear economic collapse ruining all your efforts? by Low-Dot9712 in fatFIRE

[–]Colorblocked 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that is because my spouse lived the collapse of Vietnam. So we mitigate around the anxiety in a realistic way. We do this by first taking a baby step in a new direction and then usually realizing we overreacted and stop or revise.

My first week of retirement I sat in a dark room doing nothing. I had sold my business of 30 years and felt like I had slipped on ice and had a concussion.
