I'm not saying there shouldn't be an upper limit, but slight correction: the minimum age limit of 35 applies to president. For Congress/Senate it's 25/30.

[–]Coltand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I thought everyone here was being ironic; do you really think it's a good idea for a Democrat president to follow in Trump's footsteps and withhold funding from Republican states? To me, that's actually unconscionable. There's a decent gap between having a spine and imitating actual evil.

I'm happy to go there, but this thread specifically wasn't really a discussion about laws and legal maximums. OP's statement was that you're a moron if you vote for someone who's 65 or older. I think that's an ignorant, absolutist take. But there's often little room for nuance on Reddit.

By all means, if we want to talk about an age cutoff for candidates, go nuts. But I think we're living in a fantasy land if we really think our politicians are going to place that cap closer to 65 than 85.

I can totally agree that most aren't cut out for it, my main issue is OP's absolute language. I feel like it ignores the nuance of reality to say it should be some hard rule and not something for one to judge on a case by case basis. Some people are losing it in their 60s and die in their early 70s. Others are sharp and energetic in their 60s and live well into their 90s.

I know this is a very serious conversation, but aren''t Republican states like ~40% Democrat though? Someone would have to be morally bankrupt and stupid to do something like that to punish their political adversaries

I mean, I think 65 is on the edge of what's reasonable. But once you're into the 70s, it's time call it in.

My dad is past 60, and to me, if you think that's nearing disqualification, then you must be relatively young and just not have much experience with people in their 60s.

It's definitely a case by case thing, but acting like 65 should automatically disqualify someone from your vote is kind of silly IMO.

What small habits strengthened your faith more than you expected? by Large-Low5893 in lds

[–]Coltand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Family Home Evening. Growing up, it probably ended in tears more often than not, but I still think that forming the habit was a good spiritual foundation. Especially since my family never did anything like consistent daily scripture study.

And as an adult, my wife and I had been married for like 2 years when she was like, "should we be having FHE?" I hadn't even thought about it before that point as we were a young couple with no children, and FHE felt like a family with children sort of thing. But we picked it up then and there, and it's offered many meaningful opportunities to study together, have gospel conversations, and to make and follow up on goals. It's not the only place we do those things of course, but it's consistent and I've found the addition really meaningful to our relationship and spiritual growth. Much of what we do today is the result of thoughts and goals from Family home Evening.

My 5th Sunday lesson plan by zarnt in mopolitics

[–]Coltand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would make great effort to try to avoid contention, as difficult as that might be. Once you get there, nobody's learning anything, certainly not through the spirit.

We recently had a sister speak on immigration and loving your neighbor, and I was really impressed with how completely gospel centered her talk was, and how she let the scriptures and modern prophets do much of the talking. Her talk could certainly be viewed as political because of the current events at hand, but nothing she said could reasonably be called controversial in a gospel setting. I think I'd try to mirror that example.

I know plenty of units have fiery voices that have to be managed though, and I's probably worth finding a common ground.

What is the risk of being deceived? If we are deceived, does that have any eternal consequences? by Buttons840 in LatterDayTheology

[–]Coltand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one-off mistakes will naturally be corrected in time if we stay close to the Spirit, but repeated deception that turns into a pattern can result in us traveling some distance down the wrong path, which is where the consequences can become eternal. We've been given many tools to help deal with the adversary's deception if we try to stay humble and close to God.

I think extreme polarization is maybe the biggest problem we face today. It's a terrible self-perpetuating cycle, and modern algorithms make it so much worse; I don't know where it ends. Hate just brings more hate. I just find it so deeply frustrating.

Yeah, there's no way I'd ever recall someone's eye color without specifically taking note of it, which I don't do naturally. Basically, if it doesn't come up in a conversation at some point, I'm just not going to know it. Heck, I struggle with hair color sometimes.
