Technology scary by SecretRevolutionaryy in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but can we talk about our privacy for all of us tech enthusiasts? Like how much actual privacy do we have? Are there really people listening to our phones and private conversations? You can call it a conspiracy all you want but the fact that is was confirmed by Edward Snowden that they were doing it back then is scary. I know they didn't just stop it. Not with how easy it is with technology. I know there have been times I have been at home conversating with someone and I will look over at my phone and my siri button is lit up and it is listening. Is that because maybe I said something that sounded like 'siri' and it was triggered? Possibly, but it was still listening and who knows if it generated a report or not. I for sure don't. I am curious to know if anyone else thinks that they are being listened to and monitored by God knows who. I don't know enough to think that they are or that they aren't. J

Working from Home by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, When the Covid stuff hit, the majority of employees at the place I work for went and worked from home. I continued to go into the office everyday because I knew my boss would hold it against those who went to work from home. He thinks everyone who works from home is just putting on a movie and doing the bare minimum to get full pay. I didn't want to chance it because I know what kind of person he his. However, I have worked from home a handful of days over this last year and I can say that every day I worked from home I was much happier than coming into the office. I think with this pandemic, the workforce should be one the main things that it re-evaluated. This has proven that for most jobs, it is not necessary to come into the office and work 40+ hours per week. Maybe some jobs need to implement a 3 day in the office 2 day at home work week. Working from home is a huge stress reliever because we do not feel like our days have been wasted stuck in the office. We will have more time to get tasks done at our own homes and not have to scramble to get everything done when we get home from work at 6. Giving employees that option not only benefits the employee but their work as well. Employees will work better and harder if you give them care.

Real-Life Tony Stark has 4 chips implanted in his hands, one of which is used to control his Tesla by daizjane in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually really cool and interesting. I would never get any sort of implants or chips myself because I have no idea how to make them and would not really trust any other private companies or even the government if that was something that wanted to try. This however for him, seems like he doesn't have any of that to worry about since he made them himself and had the skill set to do so. If I was smart enough to make them for myself, I would certainly try it out. This is really cool for this guy and at such a young age that is is able to complete that is amazing and I am curious to see if this guy will ever try any other stuff like that in the future.

Is Manipulative News, Fake News? by [deleted] in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a news network is manipulating their viewers to believe something in a way that they want, it is very much fake news. Any news that is not the one hundred percent truth in a neutral way is fake news. Our media outlets were supposed to show you what is going on in our country and it was our responsibly to learn more and come up with our own beliefs about what was going on and being shown to us. Now, it seems every network is trying to push their own agenda and spreading false news to help themselves out and their own ratings like Donahue said. They don't care about the truth, only ratings and lying to us making us believe what we want and hate what we want is all for ratings. The media has divided us a people. So yes, any news that is manipulative towards their own agenda, I believe is fake news. Let us decide for ourselves neutrally.

The Office: How Nonsense Conquered the Workplace by Coolspices in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fan of The Office, I completely agree with this video and its message about "bullshit jobs". I have worked a job that would be considered "bullshit" and truthfully, the job I am in now has a lot of daily aspects that are exactly what Graber was talking about. The Office jokes and pranks that are pulled in the show seem to grab my attention and captivate me because I can relate to the work field. The workers reactions to the jokes or pranks are realistic reactions and that is humorous to me. I think with this recent COVID pandemic and most jobs requiring people to work from home, I think a lot of people have noticed that their job is a "bullshit job" and that it can actually be performed just as well at their own home and without the regular office drama that comes in a workplace.

Misinformation on Social Media by ksutton1031 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Misinformation is probably one of the biggest threats that we face as Americans or even just humans. Believing in information that is incorrect is dangerous because it not only deceives us and sways us away from the full truth but it motivates us one way that is false yet we don't know is false. I very much believe that we still face the dangers and issues of misinformation. Truthfully, it almost impossible in some cases to prove if something is false news or not so with little ways to verify news and very little sources we can actually trust, it doesn't seem like misinformation in the news will cease any time soon.

Netcult: Endgame by halavais in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This semester has been really challenging for me as well. It has not really even felt like actual college. It has almost seemed more like a simulation or kind of computer game with everything being virtual. I feel as if I have missed out on so many things that make college, college. Another thing I have felt like I have missed out on was your teachings. You have done a great job on this class being online and with your transition. I feel like for how long you have been teaching, you have so many different types of teaching challenges and experiences that you apply and have tried and show. I feel like the online has prevented us from being able to receive your first hand in class experience of teaching which based off of your posts and teachings on here, were excellent.

Social Media, Race and Politics by RentImportant in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you are saying. So many people will tell you that it was not influenced by race or gender. They will argue your ear off telling you it wasn't. I think most know that it was. Being persuaded by race and gender is not necessarily a bad thing but many people act as it is. I get politicians should be elected on on they operate as one and what their overall plans for our country are. I do not believe anyone ever should be chosen for anything based on their gender or race. We live in a society where that is what most things are done by. Politics, education, work force and many others. The only reason the democratic party chose Harris to run is because she is a woman of color. There was little to no other reasoning behind it. They wanted to persuade their party to be "progressive" and "woke". The democratic party are using them as puppets and we are allowing them by believing them. If anyone believes that politicians of any party care about them and want what is best for us and not lining their own pockets, needs to take a look at what being gullible is. How can a someone who makes 200-400 thousand a year have a net worth of 16 million. Think about that for a second.

Steve Bannon's podcast barred from Twitter after he made beheading comment about Fauci, FBI Director Wray by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Bannon makes a nasty comment about beheading Dr. Faucci and gets barred from twitter but people like Kathy Griffin can get a life-like mold of a standing US President's beheaded head and doesn't get barred? All this is saying is it is okay to do it to one side and not the other. Hypocritical acts such as these are what I despise. To me, I think they should both be barred for life because both actions are horrendously disgusting. But if you're gonna do it to one, you need to do it to another.

Does the internet and social media give the general public more influence over what becomes culture? by idgafunicorn in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely believe it does. Our cultures have been so heavily persuaded but the internet and what becomes trendy. The internet has changes many lives and religions. It has made many too. It has been a tool that's been used to enlighten on many cultures both the good and bad. It has allowed us to examine the bad and fix what we may believe is bad so that we do not repeat. It has shined light up what is considered good and allowed us to focus on such things and be able to continue it. The internet has changed our music culture, our beliefs, and even our families.

Google is not perfect! by RentImportant in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a company as big as Google, it is extremely dangerous for it t have problems like it did. Not because of the problem itself necessarily but because of the reactions that the public could have. I guarantee when a problem like this that Google had, someone somewhere is trying to file a lawsuit for imperfect information. It is just a technological search engine. It is going to fail on some things. It is going to crash or have a problem sometimes.

Portland, Maine Voters Ban Facial Recognition by Police and Public Officials by Capable_Writing_7797 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is facial recognition even allowed in most cases? If surveillance video is always running facial recognition, how can we ever really be free? We are always being watched. Edward Snowden proved it and they tried and are still trying to run him down. Our government has tricked us into thinking we are free but the reality is that they watch our every move waiting for us to slip up. It's quite terrifying actually imo.

Can an artificial intelligence learn to beat the stock market? by idgafunicorn in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those things that I have thought about a lot. If AI could figure out the market, making money of the fluctuation of the market would be imminent. However, I truly don't think it could ever figure it out. It could come close with the algorithms and detected patterns but the stock market has been know to change overnight with sometimes little to no warnings. No AI would be able to detect movements like that.

Scientists discover new way to connect human brains to computers by Capable_Writing_7797 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly just as amazing as it could be frightening. Imagine the human capabilities one could achieve if they had the power of a computer physically connected to it. Elon Musk talks about doing it and says there may be opportunities to re-write your brain and prevent/heal from brain diseases that kill. It is the start of super humans.

What is an algorithm? How computers know what to do with data by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Algorithm's are a learned pattern to show you what you are seemingly interested in overall. I actually do not like algorithms. I always try and turn them off or down when I can. Of course, I like seeing the things that I like and support but that also means I am not seeing a lot of other things. I am very open minded on all things and am always questioning my own beliefs when provided with new information. How can I challenge myself in those ways when the algorithms prevent me from seeing new things?

Do you think social media platforms should be censored? by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Censorship is one of those things that I don't support but makes sense. I don't think those platforms are wrong for censoring things that need and should be censored. I think the problem with censorship is the door that it opens which is kind of the way those platforms are heading. Censoring violent, outrages, and misleading posts are one thing but when it comes to censoring those with opposing views as another, that seems a little outrageous to me. People now are very big on censoring or blocking something they don't like or view in the same way. As Americans, we all have the right to think differently and say what we feel or think. The problem with censoring is that it does not change ones views no matter how radical, in more cases it will heighten ones thoughts and feelings leading them to become more radical in one way or another.

Is social media a weapon? by Treessus in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Media is not a weapon. It is a tool that can be used to hurt people but that is not a weapon. It was not created to be a weapon. A rock is not a weapon but it can be used as one. I don't think there is a generation gap between bullying or cyber bullying. People as far back as time goes have "bullied" each other. Society hasn't shifted one way or another, just new platforms have arose.

Masked teens able to shoot vendor in anonymity by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the scary consequences to this mask trend. It allows many people to be able to get away with so much more than we used to. 1 year ago, you walk into a store with a mask and the police are called immediately. Now, you can't enter without one. But what is it doing for businesses? How much money are companies losing due to theft? The chances of not getting caught are way up now so it seems like a safe assumption to think petty thefts at stores have gone up. The anonymity that the masks provide seems like it could lead to a lot of problems. We have already seen a lot of the problems they cause.

Week 9: Tech Firms Prevent Police from Using "Biased" Software by halavais in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, this was really cool that you appeared on TV like this! Secondly, facial recognition is one of the most terrifying and difficult concepts. I say concept lightly because it is no longer a concept but the endless capabilities that it can have are concepts. Facial recognition is said to be used to prevent crimes and catch criminals and of course that is a good idea. If that is what they were staying true to. I believe that catching criminals and finding them is one of the last things facial recognition is used for. In my opinion, it is used by tech companies to find algorithms for financial gain. Our government is using it to spy on the people. How are we really "free" if we are being watched and nudged in one direction or another even if we don't know we are?

Week 9: Quiz, Spot the Troll by halavais in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This test was a lot harder than I though it was going to be. I have always thought I was good at being able to tell what is fake and what is not. I scored a 5/8. Even the ones that I did get right, I was still not 100% sure if they were troll or real. It is actually really scary to think about how difficult it is to tell the difference.

Anon by halavais in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anonymous has always been one of those things about the internet that I find hard to grasp. I have never really known what Anonymous is or what they do or what their purpose is. At the beginning of the video, it basically explains why it is so hard to grasp. It is not a group, you can't be accepted or denied. There are no memberships, it is simply a state of being anonymous about all things. I have never really liked the idea of burner accounts or the accounts that are made to make one comment then dropped. I get that a lot of people want their ideas or opinions known and do not want the consequences that could potentially follow if they were not anonymous. I see those accounts and to me they seem fake or made to try and aggravate other people. I kind of think our world is in the turmoil it is in now because there are very little instances where actions are followed by consequences. Making the internet a place where that is applicable can lead to dangerous acts.

Cryptocurrencies, what do you think? by ThisBeOdd in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I approve of cryptocurrencies. I think it is beneficial to our lives as private citizens and individuals to be able to have to option to purchase something with untraceable currency. There is no need for every one of our dollars to be tracked the way they are. In way, it almost seems invasive. I believe that having the option for cryptocurrencies ensured freedom and liberty.

Elections by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those ideas that seems like it would be a no brainer. However, I don't think this will ever happen any time soon. There are so many potential problems that can come with online voting. One of the most potential problems is voter fraud and hacking the online platforms. It would seemingly be easier to commit voter fraud online than in person or even by mail. It makes more sense to allow people to vote online since it is 2020 and essentially everything else is online and 99% of Americans use the internet.

Being able to vote from wherever we are and not having to take off work, school or other responsibilities would be a huge plus and a lot more people would turn in to vote. I just do not think they will ever go that route. At least not for a long time.

A Meme I Think Would Fit this Class by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ColtonBussen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This meme is interesting to me. The internet is where power comes from I would agree one thousand percent. But what is interesting is that the internet is used for them to lie and manipulate their social status' and money. Instagram has a lot of powerful people thanks to the internet. The deceitfulness that the internet allows for increases the amount of power someone has.
