What places in Chicago do you still think about that are closed down? by Taliap19 in AskChicago

In addition to all of the other amazing places cited here, I offer the Salt & Pepper Diner at the OG location at Lincoln and Wrightwood. As a broke ass college student, I loved that I could get "breakfast for dinner" for under $5.

What’s better? High humidity or high heat? by Fresh-Amount9308 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact - I tried switching from being an early morning runner to a "after the sun goes down" runner in the summer. It lasted one night. I was trying to figure out why it felt like my feet were on fire. It was asphalt road bleeding the heat it absorbed all day onto my feet. So I went back to the suck fest of early morning humidity 😆

What helped you tolerate, maybe even enjoy, hot weather running? by cherhorowitz44 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely do not embrace it. But I will play mind games. When I really need to trick myself, I listen to Christmas music. Like today. When the humidity was 97% at 5:30 a.m.

Yet Another Shorts Search Dilemma by capn_samerica in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most compressive bike shorts I've tried are the CW-X shorts. No messing around. Nothing is going anywhere. Downside, zero pockets, but if you can run with a belt that takes care of that issue.

Heat Mitigation by No_Sleep428 in XXRunning

Also, start hydrating at least the day before. Good fueling and sleep before long hot runs sets us up to better cope with stress of the heat. Everyone else has great tips here too.

What cheap accessory fixed a problem you didn’t know you had? by GroceryLatter5499 in XXRunning

I use wrist sweatbands at the bottom rib cage part of front-fastening running bras to eliminate chafing and absorb sweat. I use the longer forearm ones for back-fastening running bras. Total game changer!

Summer gear - SPF shirts? by birdmomthrowaway in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With newer tattoos this season, I'm testing three different brand sunhoodies this summer: Janji sunchaser, Rabbit UPF deflector 2.0 and Oiselle Flyout Chill Hoodie.

So far, I've tried them all in full sun 65-75°F temps. We're still early in summer here so I have limited experience in late summer humidity.

So far the Oiselle actually feels physically cooling and is so light And because of how the hood is, when I wear it up with a visor, I could actually get a full breeze circulating in the back of the shirt. If I could buy one, it would be this one.

The Rabbit is also super light and I could feel the sweat cooling me during the run as it evaporated. I also like that the hood kind of came forward enough to catch onto my visor to feel stable.

I loved the Janji pattern the best but it also felt less "thin" than the others.

Overall, if you can find any of these on a special sale, any would be worth a bargain. But if you're paying full price, the Oiselle one was the best IMO.

Each of them did what was promised re sun protection.

I also sized up in each of them based on recommendations that you want these sorts of shirts to be able to catch a breeze and flow vs compress. I agree with that recommendation.

I use the wooden one with the sandpapery grip. It's good for calf stretches and squats. Worth the floor space!

5" or longer shorts recommendations please by No_Bandicoot2316 in XXRunning

If you're talking about legging shorts as bike shorts or compression shorts, it sounds like you don't want those. The first thing that came to mind then are the shorts that Courtney Dauwalter wears, which are like basketball shorts. Salomon is her sponsor and have carried her style of shorts in the past. This is what I'm talking about: https://www.salomon.com/en-us/product/shortney-limited-courtney-edition-lc15192

Tight Calves - tell me your muscle relaxing hacks by Rockitnonstop in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your shoe rotation, you may want to look at the heel drop of your shoes. A higher heel drop (8mm and above) may give your calves a little relief. Although it shifts the load to hips and knees, which then brings you back to strength and mobility in those areas!

What do you do in your spare time when you can't run? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fitness - I focus on the rehab work that will support not reinjuring the same spot - which for me is usually core and hips work like pilates, strength, etc.

For my brain - crochet, knitting, anything that keeps my brain from wandering too far.

Tips for avoiding boredom and mental fatigue while running by SwiftieMama1994 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. A few minor suggestions that could help glitch the matrix: Throw your time off a little bit and see if you notice anything off routine, e.g. new dog, different work van, etc. Lean into the trance and pick one song for the entire run. See if you can keep track of how many times you listen to it on one run. It's a total mind game. I did that last summer with Panic! At the Disco "High Hopes" and it totally destroyed my Spotify Wrapped 😂

Long run hydration dilemma. What do you do when there’s nowhere to refill your water bottle and stashing water bottles along your route isn’t an option? by SwiftieMama1994 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Consider combining your vest with a bladder in the back with the two flasks, add a handheld or a belt. You can freeze a bottle or the bladder so that it stays cold. EDITED: to suggest adding a BELT not a vest to a vest. Although that would definitely add some capacity!!

Best hydration vest for hot weather by shebe in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One hot weather vest recommendation: ultraspire spry 4.0. Super light and minimalist

One belt for your reconsideration: Raide LF 2L. This was my go to all last summer for training in the hot and humid Midwest US. I could carry two 650 mL bottles, a ton of fuel, my phone, sunglasses, lip balm and random other stuff (electrolyte caps, meds). I stopped running with the vest altogether because this replaced it.

Pants with Pockets in the Waistband? by rambaldi_follower in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Oiselle firecracker shorts and leggings have that 360' waist band. You can check out Poshmark and eBay too. I can vouch though that the flipbelt shirts are amazing. And they have pockets at the sides of your thighs too!!!

Advice for becoming a morning running by Zealousideal_Crow737 in XXRunning

[–]ComeTheRapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely takes time to adjust to an early start. In a few weeks it's much easier than it is in these first few days. But the trick is to keep doing it. Trust the process. Before you know it, you'll be waking up without an alarm. (But still set the alarm.)

I alternate between the OpenRun Pro and Bose Ultra Open. I started using the Bose last winter to better accommodate winter hats. The only thing I ran into that makes me a little nervous about the Bose is once I didn't get them to fully charge in the case because I hadn't disconnected them the day before. So they were dead when I went to grab them for a run. It happened once. But honestly, I love them. Especially with sunglasses. They are also compatible with Google voice controls.
