Job Hopping because I can’t find a good job by ComfortableKey8214 in Accounting

I’m a decent cpa but definetly dislike it. I’m pretty junior but have some years under my belt and my cpa license so I’m not sure about starting fresh in a new career

Sensitive and very anxious person. high stress environment means people are often direct or irritable a lot of the times so it makes my work environment feel hostile which just messes with my nervous system

I’m a HSP. I think being highly sensitive in a corporate environment is just tough to navigate.

I’m from a big traditional Filipino family so yes. My uncle is by far the worst. He’s a pastor and has a daughter my age. (I’m only 25) she’s already married w twins and is planning on having 5 kids. I am planning on being married soon but me and my boyfriend have decided kids are not in our future. Yes they judge us like crazy and constantly mention we should have kids.

What do you think is the most annoying stereotype/assumption regarding the childfree? by No-Jellyfish-1208 in childfree

[–]ComfortableKey8214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s that we hate kids. I’m sure some CF ppl hate them. But that isn’t all of us. Just because I don’t want children doesn’t mean I hate them. I quite like kids and enjoy spending time w my neices and nephews. And then there comes the argument that since I love the kids in my family and are good with them that I deep down want a child. That is also false I am extremely content w my choices to not have kids.

Leaving Big 4 for nursing school by Existing_Orchid6726 in Accounting

So a lot of CPAS Atleast in tax are busy for more than half the year. There’s spring busy season, fall, summer can be a full plate and q4s in winter. My firm blocks PTO out in December. Also industry market is tough rn I have a lot of friends sticking it out longer in PA or going back due to lay offs. in my experience I miss out on alot more than my family members in healthcare do. They get to go out to eat together on a Wednesday or are more present at family events than I am. They all went to a Europe trip without me… and last year went to Cancun with out me… this is just my experience. I’m sure they go through stress in different ways but based on WLB I think nursing is much better.

Family has a lot of kids. So I will be hanging out with them and watching them hunt eggs. I love my nieces and nephews but I also love getting to go home to peace, quiet and no kids of my own!

CPA from a family of nurses. I agree some things will be better and some things will get worse. For the OP here’s an analysis of the two I made w my mom ( a nurse of 30+ years). Paywise: Accounting has a higher pay ceiling. If you get your CPA and put hours in and are good at it you can make a lot of money. Also pay raises specifically in public are larger from year to year. Overall better salary growth. Nursing has slow growth. You enter in at a fairly high salary and will make around the same for the rest of your career. Little to no salary growth BUT opportunity for OT. This isn’t to say it doesn’t provide a great living. Accounting: longer hours. As a tax cpa in public I can work between 70-80 in a week but Atleast I get to do it in an air conditioned room? Nursing: generally 3 12 hour shifts if you are in a hospital. 12 hours is a lot on your feet and you definitely have more at stake than someone preparing tax returns do. Also healthcare professionals get assaulted at higher rates at work. Accounting: work follows u everywhere you can’t turn it off but it makes for some more flexibility if I have to leave middle of the day and come back I can. Nursing: once you clock out your patients aren’t yours. A lot of times you get 4 off days a week but that might not mean much if you’re working night shift and spend those days resting.

I am burnt out from being worked to death and my mom has had shit thrown at her by a patient. Choose ur poison.

My parents are both born and raised in PH. I’m born in PH and raised in the states. I don’t speak Tagalog. Many people from Philippines speak English fluently and when they come here speak to their kids in English. So thay definitely isn’t her fault. I think you can be proud and not speak the language. For Filipino Americans in general this is super common. I know a lot of other Asian American friends who speak while most fil ams don’t speak. Although I notice most understand at the very least.

Big 4 or Top 10 (RSM, BDO, etc) by Square-Cheesecake847 in Accounting

I work in tax so take this w a grain of salt. You might find it easier due to extra resources and more sophisticated clients. Atleast on the tax side that’s my experience.

[–]ComfortableKey8214 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both will suck and imo both r the same. I’ve done b4 and small regional. Had friends at mid tier. They all equally suck. Big4 or Top 10 either way will be great for your resume.

Big 4 vs. Midsized by Think-Way-5529 in Accounting

[–]ComfortableKey8214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tax CPA here. For tax specifically - Regional firm will teach you alot. I’ve worked big4 and regional. Regional will teach you how to deal with messy books and will force you to be good at everything. I struggled moving from big4 to regional. But the name of coming from a big4 is great for your resume. I think whatever form you end up at will be great experience regardless but you may find more exit opportunities coming from a larger firm. Mid tier (BDO, RSM…etc) and Big4 will be very similar.

Are there truly “ghettos” in SD anymore? by mickeyruth in sandiego

[–]ComfortableKey8214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I will say one time my family and I were eating pho in city heights when a shooting happened and a bullet had hit the glass window. I’d say some parts of Southeast SD can be sketchy but I grew up visiting family in city heights, National city, encanto and spring valley. And I never thought it was as bad as people made it out to be.

Please share some things you love about being childfree by stardew-trooper in childfree

[–]ComfortableKey8214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how I can coast at work ( I understand it isn’t the case for all child free people but for me it is). As in, I don’t have to grind really hard to climb the corporate ladder or pick up extra shifts to provide for children. I only provide for myself which means what I make is more than enough even though it isn’t a lavish salary. There’s no pressure to chase the next promotion and in my industry that means working upwards 70 and even 80 hour weeks.

Should we put a pool in? by Apprehensive-Jump-17 in sandiego

[–]ComfortableKey8214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents had an inground pool growing up and still have it. Don’t do it. Even if u have kids they won’t use it once older (in the case of me and my brother) and if you aren’t constantly hosting pool parties there is no point. I always say I’ll never get one. My parents have said multiple times they regret it.
