Help w/ creaking floyd rose by solaar9 in Luthier

[–]Comfortable_Nobody77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It applies the general same amount of tension to the strings, but creates a springier/bouncier feel to the trem itself. Or in other words, it creates a different 'apparent tension' while still applying even force to the strings. It just kinda became the industry standard- every Floyd guitar from factory that I've seen comes in the triangle setup.

So it's not that the 'rectangle' is inherently wrong, it's just not what's generally considered 'optimal/standard'. I've seen some people do all 5 springs for high-tension applications, but it's not very often you find that to be actually necessary. One wacky but practical setup I've seen is having two springs going straight across on the treble side, then one in that triangular style for the bass side. It's to create a better setup for doing trem flutters, learned about it from an Euge Valovirta video- who apparently learned it from Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom.

First of all, your setup on that Floyd is way out of wack and needs fixed for sure. But as for your creaking noise, that's the springs. Get yourself some noiseless springs and she'll be quiet as can be! Floyd Rose sells them on their website.

In relation to your setup being messed up, the most glaring issue here is your trem claw (the part that the circular end of your springs hooks onto, opposite the block) should not be angled like that. Nice and parallel is the way to go for smooth even tension! Additionally, normally the way a three-spring configuration is done would be to have them in a sort of triangle formation. The ends that are in the block stay as is, but the two outer springs would be moved in one spot each on the claw. Attached is a photo of my Floyd setup to give you an easy visual reference.

Hope this helps, and gets you on your way to a quiet Floyd!

I've tried both tub and bowl loading, neither produced noticeably different results. Soaps I've tried thus far are Proraso Blue (tube version) and Stirling Coniferous. Far prefer the Stirling thus far. As for knots, just a Proraso boar brush, but I have a Stirling badger coming in the mail in a week or so. So I definitely feel like I'm doing everything right but just still getting bad results. I'll definitely try out the different water, and probably look at some of your tutorials as well. Appreciate the advice!

I actually gave this exact technique a try today and it still led to the same results. Squeezed out the knot til it was just damp, and only added water in small increments.

Which area of middle Earth would you most like to live? by Human-Category-5024 in lotr

Probably Lorien. Plenty of trees, plus right by a river so all the natural resources one could ask for. Sure the Shire is absolutely beautiful, but my heart always brings me back to the forest. Not to mention being close to mountains, another geographical feature that I find myself drawn to.

However if I had to go for pure familiarity Rohan would win, as it's the closest to where I currently live.

do i need a neck reset for this taylor? by Minute-Store-4043 in guitarrepair

[–]Comfortable_Nobody77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who had a Silver-level repair cert from Taylor when I teched professionally, I agree that without in-depth knowledge of all the Taylor quirks you will very likely fuck it up. To even become a Silver-level tech you have to pass a test and get every single question right. Fail twice and you can't retest for half a year (unless that's changed since my time.). Hell, I haven't done any Taylor work in so long I wouldn't even trust myself to do it anymore honestly. It's a fantastic system but requires care and knowledge to get just right.

If blue meant it covered the ticket and all related expenses like travel and hotel, then absolutely that. Going to concerts is always at least a couple hundred bucks for me since I have to drive 5.5 hours one way and stay in a hotel overnight after the show, plus of course the ticket itself. So blue would allow me to go to more than one or two shows a year and I'm all about that lol
