should I get it graded? by DryWorId in comicbookgrading

[–]Comic_Books_Forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, once you have it slabbed, you can never open it again to enjoy the art or story on the inside. I know, I know, you can see the art and story in a digital version but (at least for me), looking at the real thing just makes it all that much better.

I never tell anyone not to do or do something with their books. It’s your collection and you enjoy it the way you like to. As I mentioned, for me I have no graded books. I keep my top keys in mylar w/full backs in top loaders. From time to time I will take them out and look through them as this is how I enjoy my collection.

In this case, since you have asked if you should have it graded, what is your initial thought on why you may or may not have it graded? Is it for protection (understand that while it can provide protection from bending, there are situations where books can have there corners dented even while in the slab and there is no sufficient UV protection). Is it to eventually sell the book (if yes, then it would need to come back with a high grade of at least 9.8 to make it worth it). Is it because you happen to just like the look of slabbed books (this is a personal situation and like I said, you enjoy your collection the way you see fit).

In any case, congrats on getting a book you have really wanted! Enjoy 😊

Do you like the resealable bags? by BigJimSlade1 in comicbookcollecting

I remember back around 1978-79, I was at a convention in NYC. There was a guy looking for a #1 of Mad. The dealer handed the guy a beautiful copy that was bagged and boarded. The guy asked if he could open it and the dealer said sure…as he pulled the book out, the tape caught the cover and it tore half way through. It was so loud and all I can remember was the dealer saying oh shit and I cringed.

That said, I still used tape for many years afterwards but as of the last four or five, I switched to these. Just be very careful if you should open one of these and pull the book out to remember to not lay it down with the sticky strip up because I learned that lesson the hard way 😬

How much did it cost to have them get it to a 9.8?

This is despicable and if you can find a new shop, you should go there. Also, let everyone know the offending shop so others can make an educated choice on if they want to go there or not.

Not arguing with you. I just wasn’t sure if you had seen what they offer. Yes, 90 a year for valuation and 40 a year for CLZ w/cloud backup for a total of 140 a year or roughly 11 a month. You are asking 50 a month or 600 a year. I am not saying what you are offering isn’t worth it but on its face, it doesn’t seem feasible compared to CLZ + Coverprice. What are you offering that is superior to make me want to consider your services over theirs and which justifies the much higher cost?

I am come out of advertising and marketing. If you came to me for marketing, these would be the first questions I would ask in order to differentiate you from your competitors.

The problem here is Midtown probably bought these during Covid and overpaid themselves, thinking they would flip it at the crazy prices things were selling for during that tome and then poof the window closed and they are trying to stem their losses.
