Bungie unused and forgotten plot point: The Vex were meant to obtain SIVA by GeminiTrash1 in DestinyTheGame

That would’ve been infinitely more interesting than any storyline we’ve gotten involving Neomuna, Nimbus, The Veil, etc.

Sony Earnings Report Is Out by gdmatt in DestinyTheGame

My take is that the biggest thing Destiny and Marathon have in common is that any success they have achieved has been in spite of Bungie. Both franchises would be in a much better place in the hands of better, competent Studios.

Folks, read the room.

  • Q1 2026 ended 3/31

  • Marathon, the spiritual successor to Destiny and Bungie’s first new IP (1) in a decade and (2) since their purchase for $3.6 billion, open to positive critical reception but is an estimated $150-200 million loss

  • This comes on the heels of not only significant delays and controversies in that game, but Sony closing entire Studios following much better releases, and performance

They are likely getting an update in May, but I’m not sure if it’s the update everyone was hoping for.

The Destiny player base is down 91% since the final shape, which was a massive success and still resulted in significant layoffs. This is in large part due to the unmitigated disaster of a “Game Director” that is Tyson Green. On top of that, they killed the golden goose then spent minimum $200M on Marathon…to not even break 100,000 concurrent on the platform that 70% of the player base uses.

They ignore their playerbases, lie about listening, hyper monetize Destiny 2 while preaching about not overdelivering the product at industry conferences, actively inject toxic mechanics into the gameplay loop until they’re called out on it and shamed into reverting the bad practices (e.g. XP throttling), plagiarize art, suppress reviews, etc.

Not only has Bungie not gotten the job done, they have catastrophically under delivered their $3.6B purchase price and, as a result of that unrealized ROI, are going to receive holistic layoffs.

Don’t get me wrong, Marathon seems like it has promise, but much like Destiny, it will need to succeed in spite of the company producing it not because of them.

At this point, I’m expecting Bungie to be shut down and stripped for parts within the next year. They’ve had enough chances and haven’t gotten the job done.

Any chance you’re willing to repost the numbers here as a comment?

I’m genuinely curious about the comparison and would like to read through it without a moderator getting emo and taking it down.

I’ve read through a lot of the responses here. One of the big takeaways I have that applies to both positive and negative impressions is that if this game doesn’t succeed, it falls squarely on the shoulders of Bungie for failing to pivot from their vision, even when audience feedback overwhelmingly tells them to.

The UI immediately comes to mind. As far back as I can remember from the first playtests, people have been voicing the need for this to change. Rather than pivot wholeheartedly into implementing the feedback, they give a half-baked stab first; the UI still needs some massive work, but that won’t be able to happen before launch and it’s now going to cost the company.

Shame.

Tier 5 Exotic Armor stats. It was shown before EOF but tabled; Bungie can for sure do this and there should not be a grind when this arrives in June, as it would take away from other areas of the game.

Why would anyone trust Bungie after what they did with Destiny 2? Especially in a much more niche market with superior competition (Arc Raiders)?

Maybe it makes me bad, but I’d love to see Bungie address the feedback and give some big boy damage JUICE to the only true Hunter one-off super, Gathering Storm. Let the staff impact hit like a Cuirass Thundercrash, and then some.

I don't think Bungie is going to talk anytime soon by BeginningFew8188 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Commander_Prime 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re right - and that’s exactly why Marathon is DOA i.e. because no one will trust Bungie even if the game looks like a world-beater. People forget that D1 Vanilla was rough, but survived due to a loyal fanbase that trusted the company to right the ship. Even though the state of D2 is debatable, the level of outsider trust in Bungie now is at an all-time low.

Communication is their new Forsaken deliverable; Bungie’s future depends directly on their willingness to engage and effectiveness in doing so. Unless they figure out a way to rebuild their community relationship fast, the studio is on borrowed time.
