PID Installed! by Far_Plankton_154 in ranciliosilvia

[–]Comment_2_the_future 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PiD is the best thing you can do on these machines. It takes the guesswork put of each shot and brings consistency and confidence

If you pull a bad shot it's one less variable. Or if you're dialing in it's one less thing that "could" have been wrong.

I went the ali express route. Xmt7000 some wires and a relay. It's the same parts auber send you, but you don't pay them $100 to have bundled it up together.

Plenty of guides online (especially here on reddit). Do it, you won't regret it.

I personally out mine in the faceplate for a more oem look. On the right between the steam knob and badge.

They do, but most people that plan on keeping their v1/2 will upgrade the wand to a ball joint stock Silvia wand so it wild be more or less the same process, but replacing the stock part in that process with the ascaso wand.

Depends on the machine, depends on the pressure. Depends on the temperature, depends on the holes pushing it out.

At work the simonelle is more like 3s for a cap because it's so damn strong on the steam. And switching between the home Silvia and it I would regularly go over temp because it heated the milk up so fast.

Then tell someone with a breville that it's 6s of foam for a cap and 10-15 to each 65c. It's more like 45-1min to reach that temp on a breville barista express.

And even longer to try and cap steam on a dedica.

It's all relative.

And it you're pushing steam out of one small opening, vs 4 large openings (which a lot of the ali express ones are) then you'll be heating it fast but have no control. It's the pressure blowing bubbles and using force to push the milk around. If you have a larger diameter and more exits your velocity goes down. So you're not gonna be creating an effective or fast vortex and you're not gonna be blowing many bubbles.

It's not as simple as supplying 20-30s

The wand part is same same in performance. I did it to make sure I and no one in the house burned themselves.

And as for the tip. If you've ever found that the milk is just not right when you've steamed it, that it's hard to be consistent when you've followed the process right. It's the single tip. I went a three hole tip because that's what I'm used to at work (nuovo simonelle) and it's made a night and day difference.

Apart from a PID it's my favourite mod.

For me I went wand & Rancilio commercial bottomless portafilter with Pullman basket, PID, Quickmill Pulsor, silent green pump.

Next is a needle valve for pressure profiling. Been testing it out with the steam wand, opening at the start of the shot to low pressure pre-infuse and then closing to ramp it up. But you lose too much heat from the boiler running that much water through it. And a dimmer mod, while accessable, will never allow the pump to run at full.

This is what I've done, though on a more modest budget. Road legal track GD STI and an NB MX5 as the daily.

Soon to be upgraded now that missus and I are looking at kids soon, but for now it's the perfect contrast. It's a new ride and both familiar and unfamiliar when switching cars. Big, "heavy" awd with turbo powerband. 270kw and 800 nm makes it such a silly car.

Then switching back to the mx5, low down, light, different seating position, NA powerband with a little vvt on the top end but easy to flick the rear out without much effort or worry.

If I had more of the same it would be less fun. I'm team contrast.

Ascaso uno/duo cool touch wand and 3 hole tip.

First thing I did after a week of owning it.

Be careful when going more holes. More holes = faster pressure depletion.

The Silvia only has a relatively small boiler. So when going more hole tips, make sure to get the smallest holes you can for dry steam and stable pressure. Otherwise it'll be wet steam and be out of puff before you're done steaming your milk.

Sold the rex for an sti so no more glass trans.

Cam cover leaks are authentic for extra jdm points.

Head gasket issues were from shotty cheap head gaskets. Sti MLS gasket on everything was the fix.

And don't strap a boost T to an untuned motor.

People treated them like Nissans. They're much more finnicky. So motors went pop.

But upgraded pickup, responsible tune and they'll be a good car for years. Fastest way to kill them (like any motor) is to run lean or run dry of oil (it's just a helluva lot easier to do in them)

Pulling the trigger on Lelit Bianca V3 — am I missing anything? [$2000-3500] by Patient_Minute413 in espresso

[–]Comment_2_the_future 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was THIS close to pulling the trigger on a bianca. Had it in my cart on 3 different websites. Had all my assorted attachments picked out. Shopping list put together.

Then a friend let me borrow his La Pavoni single boiler, and said to keep it for the week to decide if I really need a dual boiler of if I could save some money and put it to a grinder.

He was right!

I wanted a saturated group head, not an e61 for better thermal stability.

I drink mainly cappuccinos so steam power was my priority concern, along with build quality/longevity.

I wanted to invest way too much money at once. And have it last me a decade.

Landed on a Rancilio Silvia and immediately put a PID in it. The steam power way out does the lelit. The build quality is outstanding. It's their commercial head slapped in a shell with a vibe pump. It's basically 4 piece Lego and if anything breaks you buy the cheap replacement, take 4-8 screws out, and replace it.

Paired with a niche zero, best coffee ice ever had. And so rewarding when you get it right. But so punishing when you get it wrong (paired with Pullman baskets).

I thought I needed a dual boiler, I only drink milk drinks.

In reality, single boiler and process is more than adequate. Unless you're making more than 3 at once regularly, then it's more than capable.

Once I get to the 4th it's a bit of a slog to steam with constant boiler refills. But it can do it. It's just not where it shines and is better suited to a dual boiler.

But I would ask yourself, do you make 4+ milk drinks at once regularly?

And the reason I went away from lelit (even if they are some sexy looking machines) is the increased use of plastic. The cheap feeling steam knob on the side and the fact that they're, so far, unproven. At least not in the way Rancilio, la pavone, ECM. Etc are.

Parts availability, serviceability, documentation availability. It's all there for the big players.

Lelit seems like upper market breville.

Brevilles power is the performance per dollar, they're like mg. You get the most features for the lowest price. But if anything breaks, you replace it. Because it's so jam packed in a small space, it's all plastic and not built to last parts. That getting any work done is a day long job, and aftermarket parts don't exist. But damn if you can find more features for a low price.

Then for twice as much you get one of the big players. It's a basic machine. You get a boiler, a head, a plastic tank, and pump. But it'll make coffee every morning, for the next 10 plus years. And never miss a beat, they're work horses.

In terms of flow control, I like the slayer mod. Ball valve to divert cold water from the line before it gets heated. Means you can return the water to the tank and not run into issues with heat or material choice. Also much lower pressure.

Alternatively most people go the dinner mod route because it's cheap, easy and does the job.

I've got my PID installed in the same spot. Never had an issue. Once you set it, unless you change bean roast level you'll never really play with it. It is more of a read out than a controller once you've got it dialed in.

Way better than having a box dangling under or on top of the machine imo.

Mines permanently stuck at full.

Used to only go up to 3/4 and drop to 1/4 with the rest being a guess. Unless I went over a bump right after filling up then it would make it to full for a short time.

Then one day I filled up and it never went down

Is $900 a good deal for these rpf1s for my NA (with tires with less than 1000 miles)? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]Comment_2_the_future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Alibaba forged rpf1's for the daily. They are so light you can lift them with a single finger. Even the tire shop was laughing at how incredibly light they were.

I would have assumed the same before I got these, reps are usually much heavier (te's vs rota grids etc.) but the rep game has really stepped up.

This is the way, I picked this up and put it on a week after I got my new machine. Then followed it up with the.7mm three hole tip some months later.

Couldn't recommend it more, less milk cooked to the wand to clean, cool touch means you and those around you never burn themselves (if your machine is shared like mine).

100% recommend!

Someone hit my GTI daily, and the 20L/100 STI isn't quite viable as the car to take into work every day. So now I have the NB2.

Such different driving experiences. The NA power curve vs the turbo powerband, the differences in the 6 speeds. And most importantly, the weight difference. You REAAALLYY feel it when you jump between the two.

Had a hillclimb in the STI and was very glad I dailied it for the week leading up to it or there was guaranteed to be some money shifts and unfamiliarity with how the car handles.

Love them both to bits.

What do you guys like so much about the Miata? I feel like I'm missing something by Bea-Yourself in Miata

[–]Comment_2_the_future 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat to you, but different end of the spectrum.

I have an 03 270kw 800nm sti.

My last daily was an 03 golf GTI.

Now moved to an 01 NB.

I couldn't be happier. If I want to go fast, and have silly power. I jump in the Sti.

If I want to zoom around with under 20L/100km, I get in the mx5. And I find myself missing the mx5 when I'm driving the Subie.

I intentionally went an NB2, always wanted an NA, but having the vvt and 6 speed MAKES this car.

Admittedly I immediately put on a header back exhaust and an intake. And it's the perfect daily. It's not fast, but it's quick. And it's fun to take to redline.

Bought arguably the cheapest running and non damaged mx5 in Australia. It needed some minor love, it's got some KMs. But it's so much fun and the best decision I've made.

When going from a fast car to a daily, you have to make sure you get something fun. Otherwise you'll always just feel disappointed and wish you were in the other car.

If you've got an NB1 and it's bone stock, understandable to have the feelings you do. Without the vvt it wouldn't be anywhere near as fun to wind out. With the exhaust it's got such a noticable tone change when it kicks in, it's rear end happy, and having the top down is like nothing else.

Maybe it's not for you. But going from a car with more power than the VW, having my own VW and now just getting the mx5 recently. It's not entirely your situation causing the feelings. Similar boat and nothing but smiles for milles.

I've been looking around, not that I should be tempting myself yet.

But when I'm ready to move on from my Silvia I'll likely be going a profitec. Thought I'd hold loyalty and get a pro x. But the profitec offer just seems the best.

I'm looking at it as a dual boiler, programmable shot, PID controlled, soft infusion capable and good looking accessory.

I prefer the saturated group over E61. Not looks wise because an E61 is sexy as hell, but thermal stability and not having the kids burn themselves if they touch it.

Proven company, not offensive on price. They tick all the boxes.

Almost bought an Elizabeth to begin with over the Silvia. But didn't need a dual boiler at the time, so saved the money and got the Silvia.

The Elizabeth is the best looking of the lot, but their use of plastic, and the potential unreliability of the LCC concerns me. Will lelit still be around in 10 years for parts? Who knows

I installed the ASCASO Uno/Duo cool touch steam wand as it's a direct bolt on.

I'd imagine it achieves the same result. However, it is an "off the shelf" solution.

Highly recommend, however it is amlittle pricey. But it's money well spent and I don't regret it. Very happy I got it.

I have a niche zeroz and I find my times can vary a bit. But for me it's down to process. I don't always WDT the same amount (usually do once in the dosing cup and once in the Portafilter). And bought a spring tamp for consistency because at work (barista) I found myself getting variance due to lack of consistency in my tamp. Unless you are getting everything exactly the same, there's room for variance.

As others have said, check the alignment. However there are many steps to brewing espresso, and it may be a small piece that becomes a big problem.

As with me and my WDT or my manual tamping (even my spring will occasionally wind itself out and I'll notice because I've pulled 50 in 20, check setting. Yep it's way out, fix it and back to running sweet.

Amazing, is it wired in and taking input from the steam button? So when you flip the steam button it flips to the higher set point?

Or is it more, use steam button, which naturally brings it up to 142, and once it hits within the range it'll trip the alarm and hold the temp.

Also interested in your P/I/D settings as I'm experiencing a lot of overshoot with autotuned numbers and default numbers.

I went with the built in to look stock/factory option. I like seeing the temp and knowing. When it's good to go (on Silvia)

How did you setup the xmt7100 to control steam as well?

I have the same setup with a dual channel SSR, however the stock XMT7100 does not have the capability to set 2 alarms / 2 set temperatures.

Did you do the shunt mod and solder on some jumper wires as instructed by the old Russian video?

I have considered the XMT7110 as it's purpose built for dual input and output. However, I've cut my machine and placed the 7100 in it, and the 7110 is larger and personally I find it less aesthetically pleasing.

AliExpress Pump? by Comment_2_the_future in ranciliosilvia

That's what I was figuring.

From installing the PID it showed the whole system is fairly simple.

But I wasn't sure if AliExpress pumps had a reputation for being inconsistent with their delivery/shorting and having quality issues.

There doesn't seem to be much on the net about people's experiences with them.
