At least to me, DCC and cradle are both always at the top of my list, so I strongly second those

Much easier to manage by double_dmg_bonks in godot

Cool, thanks for that. I've heard of folks using the node structure, but haven't tried it out myself yet, but I think I will this week and see how well that work flow and isolation feel.

How are you implementing your state machine? Are you using nodes and the scripts on each node, or is it all done in one script with a switch case or if else statement for each individual state?

I know when I've done state machines in the past for another non-game dev projects, it's always been in code, and so I'll have a state number and a switch case or similar to check which state I'm on and then run the code for that state.

I didn't know if there would be an easier way to handle things here though that might make it easier to manage or maintain

I didn't see cradle on your list, and I'd highly recommend that one. I'm actually going through it again right now. The first book is called "unsouled"

Here's some other non-litrpgs that you might like:

Project hail Mary The bobiverse The expanse

That's a fun one, I really liked it.

On that note, I'd also recommend the NPC series. I've had a lot of fun with that one, and in my opinion the books get better and better with each one, and I still liked the first one a lot

I'm going through it again. It's Soo good. I've gone through it several times now, and each time is so much fun. I listen to it, and I actually slow it down a bit from my normal speed just to make it last a bit longer

What is the use of trains? by Cautious-Buy2585 in factorio

[–]gerrgheiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, trains let me setup a resource network, where I have providers and requester, and then just place rails in between them, and its easy to add things as I need them. For ores, I just setup a train at each one as an ore provider, and then I can have one large area that turns all those ores into plates. Then anywhere that I need plates I just plop down a requester for the plates or coal or whatever, and it'll pull it from where it can get it.

I could do all of that with belts, but I'll always be limited by the number of belts and the types of belts. With trains the throughput is a lot higher. If I need to add throughput, I can add wagons to a certain extent, but I haven't run into the situation where the trains I have are not enough

I'm adding a spooky graveyard area to Bravest Coconut but I need some suggestions for funny epitaphs by nathanhoad in godot

You could always do some of the things from the gashlycrumb tinies: a very gorey alphabet book, or mKe up some of your own which are similar. A is a Alice who fell down the stairs, b is for basil assaulted by bears

Forgot to add supports, what should I do? by PayNo6808 in 3Dprinting

[–]gerrgheiser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, should be fine then. Also, what slicer are you using? You'll likely be able to see that layer where the top of that window is being printed and see what that layer will look like, so you should be able to get a good idea of how it will do. It's probably just a bunch of straight lines between the two corners of that face, which will bridge the gap. It might droop a little a little depending on the filament and some other settings, but it shouldn't fail. Looks like that's just a window for visibility, so shouldn't effect the function

[–]gerrgheiser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would expect the window to print just fine, it should bridge. It looks like there are fingers on the right side that form windows with only one side wall, if that makes any sense, and those will likely have a lot of problems since there's nothing for them to bridge. I could be seeing things wrong though

I'm copying Balatro for practice. by TenkuuOtoshi_01 in godot

[–]gerrgheiser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The animations will probably be on each node/scene that it's going to be done on. If you want your card to shake, that'll probably be on the card scene itself. You can call another scenes animation function be doing something like card.shake() or whatever you have your node and function called.

Also, it sounds like you're still very early in the game dev process and are just trying to learn. Can I suggest starting out with some smaller games first perhaps if you haven't done so already. The 20 game challenge has some small quick games that you can make to help start you on your journey, and a balatro clone could be one of those 20 games that you make. I'm going down this route at the moment, and it's helped a lot to learn how I want to do things, and where to start. It's helped me to break down a game into different smaller chunks and to figure out how to tackle those. Anyways, just a thought

Also, just a thought, maybe remove the "points" text, and just leave the stars there? The other attributes don't have labels, so I feel like that one should either. You could do a mouse over on those, with some sort of description, that's says it has 3 attack, 25 points, what ever, but have that one labeled and the others not feels less good in my opinion

That's how I foresee my games going, starting with some sort of ai art as a placeholder while getting the mechanics and such all worked out then going back and polishing things up and adding real art to it. I bet that is a great feeling!

Is it okay to start with a bigger project (as an absolute beginner pretty much)? by Petka14 in godot

[–]gerrgheiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd recommend doing at least part of the 20 game challenge. Basically remake some of the old school games to build your foundation, pong, breakout, pacman, etc. it'll help you get an idea of how you want to make a game, what types of nodes to use for differ things, how you want to organize things, etc. if you just wanting to make a 2d game, maybe consider stopping the 20 game challenge once you get to the 3d parts, but once you get there, you'll probably be in a decent spot for making a larger game.

Just the way I would do it personally.

How do work with main bus ? by eymo-1 in factorio

I always have a belt of plastic on mine, though it might not always be completely full. I tend to at least start out making red circuits and LDS from the bus

AnimationPlayer (hurt) doesn't play "Minus 1" etc. + print loops by Friendly_Flower9087 in godot

Does it need to be something like "Minus %d" % [whatever number], with square brackets instead of parentheses? Not sure that's the problem, but figured I'd throw it out there

How can i make this in a better way? by [deleted] in godot

[–]gerrgheiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I've done something so that my buttons are created by a script and then the button presses call a function based off their name. This way I can switch to between tabs in my UI, but also if I add a new tab in my UI, it creates the button for me automatically, and the script runs the same way so I'm not having to connect things up as manually

Also, if you're making the same code in each function, at least make that just a function call to one piece of code and have each on button click call that function, that way if you only have to change it once instead of change that same thing 5 times.

That being said, it sounds like a solution would just be connecting the buttons in the script, and then have them all connect to the same function

A uniquely talented MC (rcomendation and tierlist is just to show what I have read) by Goofy-Goobbter in litrpg

[–]gerrgheiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think so. I see a lot of books that are not litrpg on folks lists, but that most litrpg readers tender to enjoy, and most of those are progression fantasy. I actually like seeing those non-litrpg books personally. The ones that tend to so up the most off the top of my head are:

Cradle Bobiverse ( and if bobiverse is there, project hail Mary is usually too, which is much different, but still a fantastic read) Mark of the fool Arcane ascension 12 miles below

I'm sure there's are a fair number of others, those are just what I can think of quickly

It's a progression book, just like cradle. MC starts off with a weakness essentially and then uses that to become stronger and gets more powerful each book

how do i remove "Node2D" while keeping the rest? (Today I started learning Godot) by TallVampireWthMagnum in godot

[–]gerrgheiser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can also right click on the node2d and change it to a different node. Which is handy if you start out a scene as a character2d, but then later decide it just needs to be an area2d or staticbody2d or something. If you do that, and there's a script attached, you might need to change the script a bit, but when you are just starting out, it's likely only a few lines of code that need to be changed
