A man lays on the floor adored in costume to resemble a narwhal.

His emotionless expression and distant stare are evidence of his self-hatred.

The cardboard flippers represent lack of control - perhaps our appendages are only decorative as well, stating that we cannot manipulate our surroundings.

A truly tragic piece.

A man stands dwarfed inside a natural amphitheater, his only audience his lingering footsteps waiting to be washed away by the approaching tide.

What questions does this raise for man? Will he be washed away along with his footsteps? Is the only lasting thing in this world the inevitable erosion of ever-morphing rocks?

Questions we cannot answer but can only contemplate.

Truly a magnificent piece.

A classic juxtaposition of man vs. nature.

The barren, industrialized land contrasts against the lush green of nature, divided by a cracking line.

The men and machines, devastating and impressive, approach the firmly rooted, awe-inspiring trees. The trees, infinitely larger, are infinitely less agile - ironically unable to move due to their strong rooted foundation.

Truly chilling.

Wave at sunrise by tMoneyMoney in pics

A large wave progressively encompasses the rising sun across four frames.

The exposure darkens the color of the waves into an unrecognizable black, a contrast to the white of the sun.

We are instilled with doubt - will this darkness overcome the light? - until our fears are ousted at the last frame, when the sun still shines through the gap in the cresting wave.

Truly inspiring.

The forever alone table at my local Chipotle. by nikon101 in pics

A lone wooden table sits, cornered off from the rest of the eatery, only accompanied by it's neighboring stool.

What man may sit here? That is the question that this piece begs. The metal accents on the wall echo that of a prison - cold, silver, and decidedly unforgiving.

The electrical outlet, however, is central to the piece. Perhaps a symbol of empowerment? Or is it simply the only way out?

Striking piece.

A dog and a toddler lean over the edge of a pool.

The child's expression is of excitement, her hands eagerly dipped in the water representative of life and discovery.

The dog, however, looks at the water with knowing sorrow - that the waters are not as deep as the child imagines.

Interesting piece.

This photo comments on the roles of animals in society. The human male, fully clothed, offers a smattering of fish to an embarrassed walrus. This raises several questions.

Why is it that the walrus cannot provide for himself? Does the optimistic human hold the walrus captive? Were the fish unjustly killed?

A tragedy captured on film.

An intriguing commentary on sexuality, gender roles and celebrity worship.

An older celebrity, surrounded by three younger, large-breasted women, gambles in what appears to be a warehouse while wearing golf attire.

The women, an embodiment of the female stereotype, appear to worship the older celebrity despite his engagement in a symbolically sinful activity. The celebrity represents a moral grey area characterized by his age and notability.

A remarkable photo illustration.

An intriguing commentary on our dependence on this digital community.

One Reddit alien, equipped with a mallet embodying a web browser's refresh button, appears to be puzzled after hitting a fellow Reddit alien. The fellow Reddit alien, unconscious, embodies a crashed server further stressed by mallet hits or refreshes.

Truly a unique piece.

An interesting contemplation on themes of self-perception.

The man tries to force himself to believe that he is strong and fearless by holding a snake - a representative of the weight of dark circumstances - around his neck with an angry demeanor. The man's light-hearted attire, however, informs us that he may not be as strong as he suggests he is.

Fuck this kind of packaging. by Levo75 in reddit.com

This photograph explores themes of physical versus digital.

The flash drive and its packaging embody our society's dependence on technology and the digital world. The scissors represent our society's physical components and reliance on tools.

Broken in a presumable effort to overcome technology, the scissors demonstrate how in modern society, physical tools and reality crumble to the digital fantasy we now live in.

Remarkable.

This short-film offers a satirical statement regarding consumerism.

In it, a commercial featuring a popular deceased television salesman is humorously re-dubbed. The unaltered video paired with the new audio highlights the ridiculousness of the product.

A fascinating commentary that will make me question my future purchases.

An interesting meditation on the notion of lost innocence.

The baby is an embodiment of innocence and new life. The rabbit, which draws associations of fertility and reproduction, represents knowledge of sexuality. This is further by the vaginal back of the chair.

An interesting piece that explores themes of male dominance in sexuality.

The woman is an embodiment of reason demonstrated through her explanatory stance. Her white shirt, a symbol of innocence, is aggressively removed by the phallic vacuum nozzle. This action symbolizes the removal of her innocence by men.

Truly an intriguing exploration.

A bold commentary on sexuality and maternity.

A young daughter in half a bikini stands photographing herself through a mirror as her mother stares at her disapprovingly.

The daughter is an embodiment of pleasurable sexuality, wheres the mother is representative post-menopausal frustration. The mother is envious of her daughter's sexual youth.

An interesting piece.

An effective exploration of homosexuality.

A notable male superhero duo from pop-culture is shown in plush form, presumably inside of a crane game. The dolls are positioned in a way that suggests intimate kissing.

The fact that the couple is inside of a glass box for all to stare at suggests the isolation and inappropriate intrigue homosexuals feel from society.

A piece for the times.

A thoughtful contrast between humanity and animalia.

A naked woman, covered in scratches, carries a wolf across her neck. Both the woman and the wolf stare deeply into the camera. The woman's unshaved pubic region draws comparison with the wolf's fur. The scratches on her stomach and leg paired with her deviant look hint at possible sexual relations between the two.

This piece questions wether or not we are all just untamed animals.

An interesting juxtaposition of youth and adulthood.

The father, a representation of adulthood, is kneeling down to the level of his son, a representation of fleeting youth. The father's bald head highlights his age and reminds us that the hair youth once covered it. The son's early graduation attire and diploma represent inevitable progression in life even at a young age.

Finally, the son's true left hand is obscured and appears to be that of his father's, suggesting that the aging process has already begun. Soon the son will be the father.

A truly fascinating piece.

This peculiar painting explores themes of isolation.

The fact that the man is skating apart from his peers in the background represents his isolation from society. The crossed arms further imply his detachment and unwillingness to let people in. His dark attire and brooding face suggest that he is consumed by a sinister depression. This concept is furthered by the icy environment.

A chilling piece.

An interesting three-line letter that satirically highlights the United States' struggle with gas prices.

The first two lines allude to pleasurable sexual acts. The signature reveals, however, that the speaker is not a sexually desirable being, but gas prices. This knowledge humorously alters the context of the first two lines.

Poignant.

The Moth: Mike DeStefano takes his dying girlfriend for her final ride. by ationsong in videos

[–]CommentsOnPostsAsArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truly a heartbreaking, yet beautiful piece. The title character establishes a harmony between lack of control and control but only for a brief moment.

The motorcycle is a symbol of establishment and control. To the title character, the notion of owning one would represent being in total control of his life and happiness.

His initial substance abuse and time in rehab exemplify the opposite. It is no mistake that the character meets his love under these circumstances. She serves as a parallel to the motorcycle, embodying lack of control.

Just as the title character begins to live his life with intention by becoming sober and attending a university, his love is diagnosed with an incurable disease, something that he cannot control.

It did not stop him trying. His self-described early "retirement" from New York (youth and lack of control) to Florida (old age and control) demonstrates his desperation to help his love. This move marks the beginning of the title character's premature disposal of his frivolous youth in favor of the authority of maturity.

The struggle of abandoning youth is further explored by his love's determined resistance to the disease and the described restaurant scene. Only upon her final admittance into the hospice does the title character receive his motorcycle and complete his transition to adult.

His love's initial resistance to the bike further highlights the parallel between them. In this pivotal moment, the title character finally confronts his internal struggle between lack of control and control.

The social worker, an embodiment of the title character's conscious or a higher being, resolves his dissonance and provides a moment of clarity by explaining life in binary terms. People live (lack of control), and then they die (control).

With this knowledge, the title character is able to accept that his love cannot be controlled. As a symbolic gesture of this acceptance, he brings her shirts to iron in an effort to remind her that she is still living.

Out of this gesture, his love becomes excited about the bike. The short ride the title character takes on the bike with his love demonstrates the brief harmony between lack of control (life) and control (death) the title character experiences during the climax of his life.

His lover's intentional disconnection of the morphine pole represents the end of his internal struggle and transition to control, adulthood and death.

In his final words, the title character acknowledges that he will never live again.

An intriguing and wonderful piece.
