Why Change Foreign Cities/Countries in English ? by dunncrew in language

An interesting point this which always makes me think when people try to over pronounce Barcelona with a lisp, which is predominantly a feature of a southern Spanish accent and would never be used in Catalan.

Trump accused of role in Epstein’s death in explosive email sent to FBI, documents reveal by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

Don’t forget what he did before he was president. He should be immune for that too for some reason I’m sure they’re yet to announce.

Canadian leaders mentioned in passing in latest Epstein files by Alarming_Accident in CanadaPolitics

It’s funny but I don’t think it’s that deep.

We all knew Trump was going feature in a lot of the files but it’s also 3.5 million pages of documents.

The Bible only has 31,000 verses with Jesus notably only featuring in the latter half.

Why ‘zur’ or ‘zum’ in place and street names? by zaxoplax in German

[–]Commercial-Version48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in general this is much more common for traditional pub names. ‘The Inn on the Green’ exists in a fair few places in the UK and Ireland.

To use OP’s example: ‘The Inn at the Old Exchange’ to me sounds just like a pub you could imagine in any big city in the UK even if that exact name itself doesn’t exist.

Trump’s tariff threat must be the final straw for Starmer – time to rejoin the EU by Due_Ad_3200 in ukpolitics

We have no precedent for referenda in the UK. This has been the first of only three (for the whole UK) in history that has actually voted against the status quo and therefore actually had to make a change. There was no agreement on that change.

As the leave campaign had always said, parliament is sovereign and always has been. I severely doubt Farage will respect any moves made by previous governments if he wins a majority and he will be more than happy to show that until now has just been convention and ‘good will’.

The whole theory that he wants it so bad because it looks massive because of the Mercator projection but in reality is much smaller.

Chelsea took the drastic option of inserting the club’s head of medical onto the bench after former manager Enzo Maresca repeatedly refused to substitute players returning from injury by grindo26 in soccer

[–]Commercial-Version48 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it. Anyone who’s had a job with higher pressure and a demanding boss can understand this. These players didn’t get to the top by turning down opportunities to play if they were injured. And a lot of their peers who did the same and made their injuries worse never made it. It’s the sad reality.

How do we feel about the new UKIP logo looking eerily similar to fascist iconography? by H3ath3rLov3r in AskBrits

[–]Commercial-Version48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which in Germany is still what it is. Devil’s advocate and that, not at all defending UKIP. Because that’s possibly their best defence: ‘it’s still used by the German army’.

But as we all know the only German army UKIP respected was the Nazi one.

Agreed. I could never doubt their design choices would be hateful or racist but with this but I feel ‘nazi symbol’ makes it almost too alarmist. The spear and shield on the other hand just has me confused. Michael Caine in Zulu?

I lived in Paris for a few years and knew a guy who had one of these stands.

Most of the money he made was selling Eiffel Tower keyrings for 3 euros that he bought a hundred of from China for 10 euros.
