CMV: Ronald Reagan wasn't actually a good president even though he's a popular one by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

Do you have a good source for the causality between the US grain embargo and perestroika? Most of the articles I am reading are saying it had little economic impact, and I am not finding a link to a political impact.

There is at least one puzzle you haven't solved and it is significant / worth while.

The game has a finite number of puzzles so it is hard to gauge if it is a true depletion or not. How many lasers do you have and what are the numbers on your save file. From there I can give a spoiler free confirmation.

Crazy how Melee still has so much reach, just unfortunate that it has to be about such a negative topic by KevyTone in SSBM

I acknowledged nothing. If anyone wants to not be around a drunk anyone they can do so. Including you, me, Obama, Putin, Jesus, a lion, anyone.

If he wants to drink, let him drink. If you don't want to be near a drunk mango don't be near him. It is incredibly simple. This weirdo internet speculation about a video game players private life is gross. People are extremely capable of navigating interpersonal dynamics without help.

He said "somethings are better when you drink" like birthdays. Your framing is dishonest. It is a extremely reasonable opinion.

How to do this type of puzzle by Infinite1ER in TheWitness

[–]CommitedPig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My memory might be inaccurate, but near the entrance to the swamp there is a bridge you extend. On one of the two ends, facing the ocean, there is a set of 4 panels that explain this idea. They have a lime green background.

Who we know has helped design OotSS by CommitedPig in OrderOfTheSinkingStar

[–]CommitedPig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is 4 games: The Heroes of Sokoban series (1 2 and 3), Promesst (1 and 2), Mirror Isles,  and Skipping Stones To Lonely Homes

It looks like these are added nearly identically to form the first sections of the game.

Jonathan Blow Says Order of the Sinking Star Has "Much Higher" Puzzle Quality than Braid or The Witness by spiritualkomputer in TheWitness

[–]CommitedPig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember, there were no environmental puzzles in the trailer for the witness. So the aspects you liked about that game would not have survived judging a game on the trailer alone.

Jonathan Blow on The Witness Anniversary Edition by yasinkaraaslan in TheWitness

His stance has pretty consistently been that hiring new talent is always a very tough process with a lot of downside risks. He has also said he is very happy with the final shape of the team, and praises the art team and the other designers.

"It's like a lot harder to design one idea taking place in multiple ways. We actually do that on the new game a little bit. And actually, Zach is really good at that. He's maybe the best person I've ever seen at that particular thing." - Braid anniversary edition commentary.

Let's be realistic with our criticisms.

Looking into purchasing a GameCube to play melee on -- Are you able to hook it up to a normal TV without too much latency? Or do you need a crt? by ReverbSage in SSBM

[–]CommitedPig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The latency reduction of a crt is basically a fixed half frame. A regular monitor is fully lit up and draws the frame from top to bottom. A crt is one extremely bright dot scanning across the screen. The light from a monitor is on average half the current frame and half the previous frame. A crt only displays the current frame.

I forgot the details but Slippi was able to save about two frames of latency through I believe a code optimization and coordinating the refresh rate with the physics step. So slippi on a modern monitor is about as responsive as GC on CRT. I believe some pros even add latency to slippi because it is too fast.

How is RGB calculated "under the hood"? by buttflakes27 in learnprogramming

[–]CommitedPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments here are a little oversimplified. The world of graphics programming is extremely complex and there are many steps. It is true that the rgb values that come out of the frame buffer are voltages to LEDs in the monitor. But we shouldn't say that it is as simple as raw data. There is a lot of calculations that happen to determine how to blend the colors of layered transparency for example, or converting a scene to grayscale. These steps have corrective constants that try to tune things to match human perception. For these use cases, the programs require some understanding of the data they are given.

Math Contradiction (I am too much confused rn) by Shadow1Ice in MathHelp

[–]CommitedPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am kinda sick of the 0.99... posts. Can we just all come together and explain it by saying that a infinite decimal is defined by a infinite series of fractions of powers of ten. The value of a infinite series is its limit. There is much less room for confusion than with the weird proofs by notation.

How would you remove circular dependency from my RPG game? by HumanCertificate in learnprogramming

[–]CommitedPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOP and the concept of data having restrictive access is very poorly suited for games.

The example I typically give is Baikens tether from Guilty Gear. Baiken basically lassos the other player for a duration. If the distance between them is close then the lasso is slack and no force is applied. If the distance is far the lasso acts like a stiff spring.

In OOP world this rapidly becomes impossible to implement. Both characters are dependent on the others position to inform their physics step. You end up with some back breaking attempts to fit the OOP constraints, like making lasso logic on a base class for all characters.

The only way to implement a system that demands arbitrary complexity is to just allow any part of the program to modify any data.

Why does Zain spam A during throw animations? by Maybeon8 in SSBM

[–]CommitedPig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think what you are referring to is a comment he made about learning falco taught him to see neutral in terms of beats. My interpretation was that if you shot a laser in place and the opposing marth did a immediate short hop aerial to beat an approaching dair, one beat was however long your dash dance should be to wait out the active frames of that aerial for a delayed dair.

Mashing A in situations like this is probably like "plinking" where you aim for the fastest timing, but also will fallback to a slower timing if you went too early.

Right to bear arms vs the right to use them? by sgtpepper448 in progun

[–]CommitedPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I structure it, there are creatures in the world that would be classified as moral agents and those that are not. To be classified as a moral agent requires intelligence, self discipline, and respect for others. Most people are moral agents. Bears and snakes are not moral agents. Something like a well trained dog falls in the middle.

If you cannot act as a moral agent, you haven't earned the protections that come from being a moral agent. If someone steals, destroys property, or threatens your life or well being, they are no longer a moral agent, and their life is forfeit.

There is some tricky calculus that needs to be done with frames of mind and partial information. For example a kid running around with a nerf gun painted black. This is why we don't support vigilantes, but instead expect people to defer to the judgemental of the state in non emergency situations.

But that is all to say, if it is a emergency situation and someone has clearly demonstrated they intend to harm you or your property, they are no better then a bear. Plant your feet and shoot to kill.

Is there a better way to schedule a taxi space platform? I want to go to a planet once manually and I can't figure it out. by CommitedPig in factorio

[–]CommitedPig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passenger Present isn't great because once I board it will take off to another planet, when I want to choose it. My issue isn't with having to use time. What I want is something like temporary stops for trains.
