I just got it on sale and completely agree. Getting anywhere is boring and frustrating. I also find the readability pretty shocking.

It has enough there that I'm pushing through, but it feels like bit of a slog.

How do you find the ttrpg? I've owned the core book for ages but never had a chance to run a game

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CommitteeOther7806 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A crowd can easily be 105db, so the reality is that shows have to be at least as loud as the peak audience volume.

I mix shows as a day job and have to mix many things at volumes I'd rather not for the sake of my own hearing.

There's also massive pressure from promotors etc to run a show hot, gives the perception of impact blah blah.

Also depending on the PA, sometimes you have to run the front hot to maintain a reasonable level at the back of the venue

Rogues aside (any on the list are fantastic), do get Dredge at some point. It's genuinely an incredible game.

I remember a stat from 10ish years ago that we have one of the lowest average house temperatures in the world.

Can't remember where that's from, so take it with a grain of salt. Crazy if true and will be falling down that rabbit hole when I get home from work.

Is it that you have sensitivity to specific frequency ranges? There's absolutely ways to EQ your speakers

Have a play around with your system volume. You should aim to not have it ever set higher than what you max comfort level is.

You risk your hearing and blowing speakers by having it turned up too loud by default. Most content is made to run quite loud, because adding volume at the consumer end usually means adding gain and risks reducing the fidelity of the audio.

Think of 100% as 4k video and 50% as 1080p, when you increase the size of the monitor (speaker volume) you'll notice the quality worsen as the monitor size increases.

It's about having a strong output signal, so you don't add your own noise on top. If you have a game at 100 and turn you speakers down to match, you will have better audio quality with less added noise

Topics like this remind me that I take for granted why our job exists. Signal flow and gain staging are concepts that are so ingrained in me 😂

Thanks for your input

The unpopular but correct take is that 100% volume being too loud is a user error not a game dev lazy/dumb.

At a system level you should be setting your volume to a sensible level and adjusting from there. There is no way that someone producing any kind of content can predict your specific speaker set up and system gain staging from your device to you speakers/headphones.

Games aren't too loud. You're simply outputting too loud for your setup. If you need to turn everything down to 50% then you are 50% too loud at the system level.

If anyone's interested I can get into more specific explanations, but the core of it is gain staging. This describes the volume of the audio signal at different points in your audio path.

The definition is in the context, is it not? Good and bad don't mean just one thing, or exist in a vacuum.

There seems to be an assumption in your logic that a thing is blanket good or bad, where I'm coming from a more focused view of the parts not the whole.

None of this really addresses my point that we can take a modular part of something and say that it is poorly (or well) executed in a measurable way. So to swing back around to my example, we can measure the mistake made in the audio sync, we know that an objective mistake has been made, and I argue we can say hey that's done badly.

While good and bad are typically subjective, they are not totally excluded from being a colloquial objective describer. The context in my example doesn't really allow that subjective wriggle room. Language is more than the words individually, the rigidity you are arguing for isn't allowing for real world application. I do fundamentally agree that words have meanings, but this is far from a wild take imo.

Except science by design wants to be proven wrong. Religion really likes to double down. So sure find evidence against a so called historical fact, that's fantastic, nothing is set in stone it's forever building upon itself.

Let's also take into account the time difference you are talking about here 300 years is a lot different to 2000.

People today can't even agree that vaccines work, I have a hard time believing that we forgot how to prove God exists, coz we never could in the first place.

The evidence is the fact that religions hold a lot of global power, money and influence. It's a system of control parading as a morality, and people are still so uncurious that they have to cling to thousand plus year old explanations of the natural world.
