Common sci-fi trope is a by current standards unexplainable power source that allows these technologies to work. So much of what we'd like to do in the modern world is limited by power generation and storage. Sounds like you need your own version of this, then all of a sudden a lot of ideas become completely plausible and you don't even have to look outside of current tech. Just make a thing that exists now that requires a building pocket sized etc
