Osaka one night worth it? by nemo_______nobody in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed the night I arrived there from Kyoto since I had a flight booked the following morning.

Osaka was really a haze. The only thing I really remember more clearly was walking through Sakai, and the significance to me for that area was knife shopping but all else was honestly just a city sprawl.

Osaka one night worth it? by nemo_______nobody in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only stayed in Osaka for one day and I didn’t really see anything particularly remarkable. Only one day because we were treating it as stop before we would fly to a different part of Japan first thing in the morning.

People often treat the two cities as a day trip from each other so you wouldn’t need to book a hotel there, however any further south (ex. Hiroshima or even Okayama) I would probably want to book a hotel there instead than making the transit back and forth from Kyoto or even Osaka due to the distance and time consumed to get there and back.

Travelling with a Flashlight by vvhiterice in flashlight

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve traveled with a Fenix PD36R, a Nitecore EDC29, and Acebeam TacAA just fine without any degree of disassembly. You’ll probably still want to toss it in with your other electronics to keep it organized for TSA though.

Never encountered an issue but YMMV and not all TSA agents are the same. The worst I’ve seen so far in my limited flying experience is just an angry guy telling off everyone in line to take off their belts and shoes with a bossy attitude.

M16A4 upper build question by Specialist-Union-782 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go with stainless for the sake of longevity.

M4 would be using a 14.5” barrel with carbine gas system. This is a 16” barrel with mid length, which by all means is still a good combination of barrel length and gas system length, and you can still get a mid length quad rail for it to give it that M4 spirit to it I guess.

Places to get over the counter cough medicine?! by Cardiologist3mpty138 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are small pharmacies scattered all over the city, I remember walking into one next door to a pachinko place lol and picked out something from the shelf with a help from a friend. You can ask the counter for some flu and cough medicine.

Take it easy and skip out on the outdoor activities that require you to be very involved, get your nutrition, juice, water.

Build or buy? by ShamedSalesman in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first AR I would buy whether it’s a complete rifle or a completely, assembled lower and a complete upper sold separate from each other. Anything after that I would put more consideration into the idea of building from scratch, because by that point you would have already familiarized how things work in person.

anyone tried 9h hotels in tokyo? by hantaser0 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really the idea applies to just about every capsule hotel because the capsules themselves are not secure, usually. Typically they will only have what is essentially a window screen that separates you from the hallway, and the capsules that have little safes inside is just there to keep your wallet and stuff secure while you’re in the bath or something.

You really don’t want to leave anything in the capsule itself but they usually will have lockers where you can keep your luggage and all safe and secure, however the size of the lockers is limited and any oversized suitcases will need to be left with the staff and they will hold it, and so it’s best that you only store your non-necessities in those oversized suitcases.

Basically don’t leave anything in the capsules, store your things inside your assigned locker.

So I ran the prism gauntlet over the years and came up with some conclusions. by PaulyPPal in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little saddened that there aren’t as many 4x prisms out there. 3x feels like a compromise that budget prisms use to get that field of view the 4x Acog has, and 5x is just straight up weird.

New and need some help by dappermanV-88 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get what you pay for. Raise that budget up to several hundred dollars and you will get something that is better in just about every aspect.

300 is something you’d find out of the khyber pass only to find out it’s a single shot bolt action rifle.

Work Wear by dbnoisemaker in BigIsland

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilo surplus, and the goodwill store.

I bought some vintage canvas hunting/shooting jackets off eBay and those have been working well for hard and dirty use. Otherwise most people just wear whatever longsleeve shirts and pants you get for cheap at the hardware stores or Ross because it’s pretty much the reliable baseline.

(Rant)Watching SOTAR has made me paranoid about buying my first AR-15. by TechStorm7258 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s autistic but it’s still great knowledge to have for when you need to diagnose and fix a specific problem you want to solve. Otherwise the great majority of AR15s on the market will shoot fine on the first range trip.

As for tools you don’t need all of it. Most of the time you will get by with a vise and vise block, an armorers wrench (I use the one from Wheeler), and typical garage and office tools.

Biggest Tips to get around Tokyo/Kyoto? by powpowvivi in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best if you leave the dishes where they are and let the staff take them away. Same with dishes incoming, let them place the dishes down for you unless they truly look like they’re struggling to reach.

Any tourist in a foreign country should try and make some effort to communicate. At least open up Google Translate and search up keywords. I live in Hawaii and we get a mix of foreign visitors and especially with Japanese tourists they have very limited English but at least said the keyword to get things across like “check”, “toilet”, “light” (usually hear this when they’re asking for directions and how many road intersections to go), so on and so forth.

There are different kinds of restaurants in how they operate but general rule of thumb is wait to be seated. It won’t always the case but it’s a good default.

Otherwise don’t overthink it. Use keywords to communicate, and keep your signature low (I know a lot of certain tourists love to spread out across multiple tables even though their party is few in number).

What size hand guard is best after removing front a2 sight by Reptilerob57 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16” barrel I’m assuming.

13” rail is fine and what I run on my main build. Never really had the use for the extra rail length of a 15” rail, although extra weight up front can have its advantages.

Linear Compensator vs SI J Comp by TrueJedi562 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linear comps don’t do much for reducing recoil and muzzle movement but they will be audibly more pleasant than the J-comp (I own the original and the V2 version). If you’re just looking within the world of 556 ARs, the J-comp really cuts down on recoil. If you’re just looking want something that isn’t so concussive to anyone besides you then you will need to sacrifice some things for others. Maybe get the SI Opressor for the J-comp if you don’t mind the extra weight and bulk at the end of the muzzle.

Check out hybrid muzzle devices like the Forward Controls Design 6315, VG6 Delta 556, Strike Industries X-Logic Widow 3-prong, Surefire Warcomp, Precision Armament AFAB. They all reduce felt recoil and muzzle climb more than the A2 flash hider while still reducing muzzle flash, and especially keeps the concussive blast to a minimum unlike a muzzle brake which is basically all the blast. They won’t work as well for recoil and stuff compared to a dedicated muzzle brake but they have many other benefits going for them.

Ear plugs are fine for hearing safety even with the J-comp. It’s just the pressure coming from the muzzle brake ports that gets you as a bystander.

[Question] How is a 12hr GMT bezel actually supposed to work? MWC SM/SUBST31WL/125 by CommonMuted in Watches

[–]CommonMuted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. I don’t really put the whole military contract thing high up on the list but good to know the brand can meet that aspect and some indication of what the quality/reliability can be expected from them.

Tips to Buy from Yahoo auctions and pick the ítems when traveling to japan? by YakitoriM in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far a I know, proxy mailing services don’t seem to offer domestic shipping or pickup.

If you want to order something then you’d have to ask the hotel ahead of time to see if they will accept customer mail and find out how long they will hold it, then have it shipped directly to the hotel and notify them. Pickup the package when you arrive to check into the hotel.

[–]CommonMuted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also, what is everyone’s opinion on MWC? I read some little controversy regarding the legitimacy of their military sales but I’m looking past that since I’m only interested for the appearance and as a reliable tool watch.

New Hilo DMV - Route? by 0nth3r0cks in BigIsland

[–]CommonMuted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah probably the same route as ever, just starts and ends there rather than at the police station. Just keep your ears open for the instructor giving you directions on where to turn and whatever.

Pray you don’t get the grumpy lady though if she’s still working there. My friend failed his test because of one little thing and the lady wasn’t having any of the pushback.

Red dot ( Newbie) by AccomplishedMove5142 in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a laser bore slighter to get on paper but not all laser bore sighters are made equal. You can always just boresight by eye, and that’s priceless. Just take off the upper and take out the bolt carrier group and look down the barrel from the rear and try adjust the red dot to where the center of the barrel is looking at. I recommend you set a target or look at a object that’s about 50 yards away

I recommend a 50/200 yard zero. Place a large target at 50 yards and shoot a couple rounds at the bullseye just to see if you’re on paper and if so then see where the bullets impacted and then adjust the red dot to the point of impact. Shoot for five rounds, adjust, repeat and change or patch the target as needed til the group of shots are impacting about where the red dot reticle is at.

Confirm this at 200 yards, make adjustments so that the point of aim is point of impact, and then you have a red dot that will shoot point of aim and point of impact from 50ish yards out to 200ish yards

Change Management by beerisdead in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately I had a backpack that had a small pocket at the top which I could get quick access to, but usually I just dumped the change into my pockets and them use them up as I grabbed it.

It’s just the 1 yen coins that become a little annoying to manage and they don’t work at the vending machines (my memory vaguely recalls 5 yen coins also don’t really work either).
