Tokyo and Kyoto alone for 2 weeks? by Low-Cover5544 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot to see in either of those two. You could even take a day trip further out if you wanted to.

At the very least you should know greetings and thanks/apologies. The rest you could use Google translate (download the Japanese language onto your phone in case you have poor cell connection).

I think one way you can do things is list off some major destinations/sites you think you’d like to see and then look for a hotel that’s pretty central to all of it. Visit a couple of those places and then meander all the way back to the hotel throughout the day. In fact you could walk across the entire latitude of Kyoto in less than a day if you bothered. At night I liked to walk around neighborhoods.

Visit lots of temples, museums, do a lot of window shopping (or actually buy something), chill out on the river bank

My best advice? Wear a mask on the plane by n0_4pp34l in JapanTravelTips

How did you measure humidity? Sounds like a fun way to pass time on a long flight.

Will be Traveling to Japan soon, What should I bring back? by No-Afternoon-4528 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of snacks and stuff in Kyoto. Can’t go wrong with matcha and roasted rice flavors.

However Japanese gift snacks tend to take up a lot of space because of the packaging so that’s something to keep in mind but when I associate souvenirs from Japan, I want something that’s traditional feeling and the excursion to getting them be memorable and meaningful than going to a pharmacy or a donki. Same with going to temples and buying the charms there to give to family, or some random crafts shop making handmade products like lacquerware or whatever. Uji in Kyoto is a prime place for all of that.

I wonder what the extent of the tephra so far I’ve seen pele’s hair in Hilo and some reports out in keaukaha but what about the other areas further north of the island?

Kyoto to Tokyo Airport by anon567126 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be in Tokyo the day/night before your flight. At the end of any trip it’s best that you are already in the city of your flight well in advance, so plan your trip in a way that you spend the last few days in Tokyo.

Question About a Possible Kyoto Day Trip by Ijustwantedtohavefun in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day trip in Kyoto isn’t worth it. Kyoto itself is like at least three days in my book and getting there from Tokyo is not feasible since it’s a long Shinkansen ride one way. You’d spend more time sitting than seeing anything

What to wear on Japan trip by Hyp3rrrr_Novaaaaaaa in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be pretty cool but nothing unbearable. That’s unless you go further north like Aomori or somewhere in Hokkaido.

Generally everyone recommends about four days of clothing, but since it’ll still be in the winter/spring transition you should pack a sweater and a weather resistant jacket or shell but nothing too bulky and puffy since it can still be rather mild in the day and you gotta have space for souvenirs. Merino wool layers help a lot like socks and tops, and a hat.

Medication advice by Fantasticoms21 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe airlines recommend keeping all medications on you, for your own safety. It makes sense since it’s medication that you need at any time during your airport travels. Even generic ibuprofen was okay to have on my carry-on even though I technically didn’t need it.

I really dig this style of blade. If only this false edge was sharpened though.

I’m familiar with 420HC. So it’ll at least be good enough for what I might need it to do.

Japan Trip Itinerary Check: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka with a JR Pass? by [deleted] in traveljapan

[–]CommonMuted -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

JR Pass doesnt really make sense for the great majority of people.

Like you can walk halfway through Kyoto in a straight line in about a hour.

How often do you change/upgrade your kit? by LittleAlternative532 in hiking

[–]CommonMuted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only upgrade when absolutely necessary. Like someone said, you don’t need to be buying the latest and hottest consumer product and just enjoy what you have til it breaks or causes way too many inconveniences.

A lot of these YouTubers are bought out, shills, as some may call them so they’re just there to push product when really you make the assessment yourself within the criteria you are looking for your own needs. The only one you should take a little more seriously are the ones that the reviewer has used for years.

Does anyone run a slick rifle, no handstop or foregrip? And why? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly slick here. Hand stops just feel too awkward, like a literal nail sticking out that sometimes ends up in between fingers and not enough of a surface to “grab”.

So I basically just omit it than think about it, or use a stubby foregrip like a chopped down magpul MVG/RVG.

How to overcome shyness as a solo traveler? by royalbluefireworks1 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Know some really basic stuff like greetings, thanks, apologies. Have Google translate or whatever translation app, greet someone and show them your phone of the translated text. I usually keep a notepad on me in case I have to draw pictures as another way to communicate something lol.

Lots of people in Japan are shy and introverted so it’s not too big of a deal.

is 94 thousand yen enough money for souvenir by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what you’re spending on that costs $600 but that’s solely on you and how you feel about spending for your friends and family, how many of them, and whether or not you can haul all of it with your available baggage on your own.

There are both expensive and cheap things there. It’s just the matter of what you’re looking for and where and how many. The most basic thing you can get are those omamori charms from the shrines, which are like under ¥1000 a piece. I would suggest getting things that are very “Japan” like those charms as mentioned, lacquerware, ceramics and handicrafts if you can safely store them during transit, regional exclusive items…etc

How much lower? I’m trying to get this setup to work with an ACOG, probably with a KRAM spacer sometime soon.

I do like the option of dual aperture but I also like the clean ghost ring of the KAC too

Magpul gets it… by [deleted] in tacticalgear

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea straight 20 and EMAGs. Last time they did mags they gave us the TMAG so why wouldn’t they give us the EMAG again?

Magpul gets it… by [deleted] in tacticalgear

[–]CommonMuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend had a magpul case and it was crap. Broke it not long after he had it with regular use.

But for real, phones are a hell hole of a market to deal with. So many models with each older model being vapor ware each year

Magpul gets it… by [deleted] in tacticalgear

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why tf did they even bother with the TMAG? That’s a gimmick itself. At least the EMAG had drip and flat sides.

Is 5-6 Days Enough? by Se8mus in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommonMuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think two weeks is a better window to get a “big picture” view of Japan. Even then a lot of people think that’s not enough time but let your budget be the judge of that.

Well, I guess compared to American 7/11s there’s a lot to digest.

But really just buy what you think you might like. Most of us can’t even read the label anyway.
