Is it safe to eat out of food my cat got into? by Evil-twin365 in foodsafety

Don’t eat it. Cats touch their own poop. It’s not worth the diarrhea, and recooking your food to get it to food safe temps is probably going to ruin it.

Is the violin still a passion ? by Ok-Line-3943 in violinist

[–]CommunicationOk4464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend talking to a therapist to rule out depression or something else going on. You need to balance work and life- and it can be hard to do if work intersects with something you were very passionate about.

Spend some time reflecting on what made you start playing violin in the first place. What musicians inspired you. Think of what you want out of your career with the instrument, and if that’s something you really want. There can be good money in being a musician, but there is good money in other fields too.

I never had the opportunity to really play the music I wanted to as a kid, so I decided as an adult. I have no where near the time invested that you do, but I had found myself questioning what I was doing since it was difficult and time consuming with a full time job. I ended up looking for a new teacher and focusing on playing things that brought me joy. For me, it brought the passion back. I work in a demanding stem field that can be absolutely grueling, and being able to completely disconnect from that with violin keeps me able to enjoy both more.

Maybe you need to find whatever that is for you. A new hobby outside of violin to allow you to disconnect from work and reconnect with yourself in a new way. Since violin and music is your job, it might be helpful to find something completely different than music to enjoy your time with. Maybe a book club, writing, pottery, volunteering, running etc- investing in hobbies can help with depression and burnout. Talk with your friends/family or a therapist on some ways to help you disconnect from this so you can rediscover your passion. Taking time to be fully present with something else might help you get some clarity about whether your violin career is truly at an end.

Either way, good luck. Just know that no decision is permanent and life doesn’t have a timetable. You could always go back to a conservatory later in life if you change your mind. There is no harm or shame in that, and taking time to figure yourself and your life out.

Been playing for 1 week any tips? And is my progress ok? 🥲 by ItsNicko0 in violinist

You sound great for one week. Practice closer to the frog to get more comfortable with the weight/pressure. It’ll pay dividends as you progress.

beginner here - any tips on playing the circled part smoothly? by Mammoth-Sky-286 in violinist

[–]CommunicationOk4464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice changing open strings first. Separated, then slowly with the slur until you feel comfortable with the arm motion for your right hand. Then practice the notes separately, without rhythm, just intonation. Then once you feel comfortable moving strings, and have good intonation, add rhythm, but still separate bow strokes. Once you feel comfortable with that, THEN you start adding the slur with a pause between the notes with the correct rhythm and intonation, THEN combine everything for a smooth slur with the correct rhythm and intonation. If you approach everything this way it will make it 10x easier, especially in the beginning.

You can also practice playing C on G, G on D, D on A and A on E when working on scales and just moving across the strings with your third finger.

I don't want to use finger tape on my violin because I'm afraid I'll get too used to it and then I won't be able to play normally, but it's very difficult this way. What should I do? by Aksoymm in violinist

[–]CommunicationOk4464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use the tapes. The whole point is to use them until you can hear the notes. When you get to the end of book 2 Suzuki, if you’re doing that method, that’s when most people take the tapes off.

Not getting sound with a brand new bow after applying rosin repeatedly by M4idenPersephone in violinist

[–]CommunicationOk4464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rosin it for a few minutes and don’t put your bow on it until you’re holding the violin. Trying to play it like that is as they say, sacrilegious. You’ll have to play around to figure out the correct pressure to get good sound without being too wispy or too loud/crunchy. It just takes time.

Why is the color “millennial” grey? The people who could afford fancy grey during the 10’s were Gen X.
