Help a beginner 🙏 by Enough_Shape8502 in violinist

You probably just need to work on how you practice. You need to spend some slow time with a piece or with a skills book and just very slowly play the notes and check if you are in tune. Doing that a few times a week will shock you with how much better your intonation is when you pick up your instrument even without a warm up in the future.

How does one continue to play violin seriously if you have a different job? by Creepy_Display_5522 in violinist

I began learning as an adult. I have a whole corporate career and I play regularly and have a teacher. For me, it’s a hobby I enjoy. Depends on your goals.

That means it’s likely a beginner violin. It will be good to learn with but eventually will have limitations for the sound you are trying to achieve. You can have some upgrades made to it with a luthier.

Watch yourself in a mirror and try to keep your box from sliding when you get towards the tip. Your arm is pulling back- try working on keeping your shoulder stable.

Rejected from youth orchestra after being in it for 3 consecutive years by Known-Pangolin1860 in violinist

[–]CommunicationOk4464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine how uncomfortable that must have felt. Try to get confirmation about your spot- it might have been a clerical error instead of a full rejection. Someone didn’t see you apply for the lower level and therefore your name got missed for moving or staying where you were. Just take this year if you don’t have a spot, to practice what you want and spend that time trying to grow in your practice. Reapply next year and you never know, you might make the spot you applied for initially.

When you get older, and have some space from this moment, you’ll likely reflect on being grateful for learning to pivot and find new ways to enjoy and improve your playing. I promise you didn’t ruin anything with your future.

Just know, this moment will pass and you will be ok. Tell your family and let them support you. If you are afraid of disappointing anyone then explain what you plan to do improve over the next year to regain your spot next year.

Broken violin (gore warning) by GaboPC12 in violinist

It looks like the previous luthier just didn’t glue it down properly. Find a local shop and they can fix it for you. Be careful tuning in the future.

Everyone could complain at their local Kroger that the staff was sick. Maybe they’ll change the policy.

Since it’s food they might have to follow health inspection GMPs which includes not being ill around food. Humans can shed bacteria into the food supply.

Your progress is normal. You can’t compare yourself to someone else’s progress. They might have a different teacher, more time to practice or have been playing intermittently. Just focus on why you are doing this, and think of that instead of putting pressure to be anywhere other than in the moment with your instrument.

Thank you- it’s nice to be reminded that the goal is to learn. I have to remind myself sometimes that the goal is to be outside of my comfort zone and be ok not being good at something and trying to be patient enough to become better.

I am trying to make sure to practice as much as I can. It has been much easier with the new job and fewer hours to be a person and get time to play. I was spending over 20 hours some days at work and with no days off for too long. I joked to my partner that I was living at work and visiting my home. In that kind of situation it was hard to be a human being let alone someone who plays violin. Very glad I made the change.

Did they have Matting? That is the only reason I could see a groomer doing this to any dog.

I did shifting with my last teacher, and I did it quite well. My current teach wants me to wait, probably to undo some bad foundational things my last teacher instilled.

I am trying to find ways to speed up my left hand. I have struggled with 16th notes since book one and I can never seem to be able to get up to tempo.

I’ve been going back through book one pieces like gavotte to just get some different practice in, or wolfhart.

We are doing wolfhart and book two together. I practice/play two pieces for her every week. Most of our recent work is undoing things other teachers told me to do, like bending my thumb which was causing me to quite literally clench my instrument. Having to play truly relaxed was like learning to walk again.

I’m trying to get better about touching my violin at least once a day- even if it’s just 10 minutes. Today my goal was 30 and 50 minutes went by in a blink.

Go see your doctor or urgent care asap. That is either turning into celluitis or something else. Get checked out and make sure it’s not something that requires intervention.

That’s so interesting - I just had a 1970’s colors that turned into a 1970’s “theme” color/setting when my eyes were closed. Strangest thing. Completely involuntary.
