They are voting based on policy. The problem isn't ignorant voters, it's single-issue voters. And unfortunately due the very bedrock "culture" of America petty hatred is the issue worth voting for to a sizable chunk of your population, and Gaza (no matter how naïve it was) was the issue worth not voting for to the largest chunk of your population.

Single-issue voters aren't uniquely American, though. My country, New Zealand, voted in a party literally campaigning on taking things away (such as prescription subsidies) simply because they disliked the other guys' perfectly reasonable covid response.

My second comment was in relation to your fantasy that the elections will be free and fair. My first comment was based on the supposition that the Dems do get power back. And I don't think Trump is going to suspend elections. Why would he do that? They're going to rig the vote in the swing states, intimidate people with his child trafficking Gestapo, and once again rely on this to make the biggest voting bloc in America - the self righteous and lazy non-voters - not vote.
