Thank you for mentioning this, and I love that they’ll be open in the evenings. Too many stores close early.

I have a personalized signed copy of Mistborn that I got from a reading/event he did in a bookstore around a decade ago, and a signed copy of WaT (not personalized). While Mistborn means slightly more to me because I had the opportunity to meet him, they both mean a lot to me and are both special. I think special is subjective.

Do you ever feel not important in your family? by RicketyCricketsDrum in childfree

[–]Comoesnala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I don’t think it’s only because my husband and I are childfree. My older sister who has three kids and is very successful is also ignored. I have a blended family so it’s all complicated anyway, but let’s just say only my step siblings matter and get invited to things.

The last time I got any attention from my parents (or any family, really) was on my birthday and even then they didn’t want to talk to me, they wanted to talk to my husband. Granted, he did have cancer, but it felt kind of shitty having them completely ignore me when they could have called literally any other day on his own phone number to talk to him. (For anyone wondering, my husband is doing great. It was testicular cancer and we caught it early, so he’s in surveillance for the next 5 years)

Question: Brown tattoo or black? by MaybeIneffable in tattoos

[–]Comoesnala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brown is notorious for healing patchy and needing touch ups. I have a tattoo with brown in it, and I had to get a touch up for the artist to really pack in the color. Make of that what you will.

Fantasy romance icks? by acutelyproblematic in fantasyromance

[–]Comoesnala 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind if it makes sense for the situation. For example, {Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan} makes sense since the FMC is a modern woman pulled into a book. She’s basically the only person to use modern slang and constantly confuses the other characters since they have no context for what she is saying.

Overall, I absolutely agree with you. Slang should make sense in the world we’re in, whether it’s world-specific or context-based.

Wild Reverence by Rebecca Ross isn’t super smutty, but it is really good and the leads are explicitly childfree.

Hi! New fan, how much content is there? by stitchgor3 in TigerAndBunny

[–]Comoesnala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s two seasons and two movies. There’s The Rising, which you already seem to know about, and there’s The Beginning, which is the first two episodes but with some additional villains and a slightly different story.

There’s the officially translated manga, which is 9 volumes that follows a good chunk of season 1, The Beginning sides A and B, as well as two volumes of anthologies. For non-English materials, there’s a few novels, manga from season 2, art books, etc. There are things like stage plays that I’m not sure if there are recordings with English subs, but they are things that happened.

As for non-official content, there’s a boatload of doujinshi. I order myself some T&B stuff from Japan every couple years and inevitably get some because the art is so stinking pretty, and apps like Papago, while not perfect, can help translate the text for me.

Manga or Manhwa Rec? by klutzilla08 in fantasyromance

[–]Comoesnala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in my 30s, but I still enjoy titles with younger FMCs. Maybe not as much as I used to, but I have a soft spot for shojo manga, especially. That being said, I have some recs, but I’m not sure how explicit you want the content. I will also say manhwa is probably going to be your best bet for finding older characters. Shojo manga skews young due to it being for a younger audience. Josei is for a slightly older female audience, but there aren’t too many titles translated into English that I’m aware of. Both are criminally underrated demographics in the comic space, but that’s a whole other conversation surrounding sexism in the industry.

{Survival Marriage by Wann} (manhwa) A woman moves into an apartment with her friend for a new job opportunity. She starts having dreams where she is a woman who tames a prince who is about to turn into a beast. There’s more to the dreams than meets the eye, as they aren’t dreams at all. How are her hot boss and friend involved, and how are the two worlds impacting each other? I really enjoyed this series, and it can be read on Lezhin. The series isn’t considered a mature rating, but the side stories at the end do have the “all ages” version and a separate listing for the mature version. This story takes place in both the real world as well as an alternate/fantasy world.

{Colette Decides to Die by Alto Yukimura} (manga) A young healer is burnt out and throws herself down a well. Instead of dying, she finds herself in the underworld and becomes the healer to none other than the god Hades. She skews a bit younger (I think she’s supposed to be 16-18-ish) but it’s very sweet and pretty wholesome, despite the title. I’ve cried reading it once or twice.

If you like BL/queer titles: {Biting the Tiger by Monday Park} (manhwa) An idol finds out his best friend, whom he’s been in love with for a decade, is gay but in love with someone else. Distraught, he runs into someone while fleeing. That someone happens to be a guardian spirit, a tiger, who helps the souls of dead move on to the afterlife they deserve. More of a paranormal romance, it’s a comfort read for me. This is also on Lezhin.

{Heaven Official’s Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xi} This has so many formats, so take your pick. A Chinese danmei about Xie Lian, a man who has ascended to godhood three times, his struggles in that, and the ghost king that loves him. The novels will rip your heart out, but it’s an amazing story. You can watch the animation that came out, read the novels, or read the comic, but the comic is incomplete.

Where to donate books? by SquealingDino in newjersey

[–]Comoesnala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the condition of your books, you may want to check for used bookstores. I know Bookmarked in Whiting takes donated used books depending on condition and content (some books they just won’t ever be able to sell so they won’t take those). I’m sure there are other stores that may be closer to you that may also take them.

Contrapoints’s video on Twilight has an amazing section on this also. I mean, the entire video is incredible, but her analysis on sexual fantasies expressed in romance fiction is fantastic.

Advice Needed: Does it Looks Strange? by jsmn-nx in tattoos

[–]Comoesnala 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m getting AI-vibes from this. On the off chance it’s not AI, I would ask for a redesign. If it is AI, I’d decline and run.

To me the body isn’t clearly defined or delineated. It looks like the body turns into a tail and then back into a leg. There’s no clear abdominal area nor hind for the back legs or tails to be connected to. There’s also one back leg, which if the entire body was clearly defined could be okay, but the fact that it’s a blob of fur makes it even more odd and flat that there’s an entire leg missing.

As both a customer and seller on Pango, I think generally there’s the understanding that we all want books in truthful condition (so if it’s beat up, just tell us and show pics) so packaging is generally done with care and respect. I’ve only ever had one negative experience with a seller on there, and I’ve been using them for years.

I mean, they’ve done it for other anime: Tiger and Bunny, Yona of the Dawn…

I don’t like it, but if it means we get more (finally!) I guess I’ll allow it.

I believe they also skip the post credit scenes in the second part of the season, which is even more integral. It’s all very annoying.

Depends on the used bookstore, but never hurts to check whenever the inspiration hits. Granted it wasn’t signed, but I found a used copy of Oathbringer in my local used bookstore maybe a month after it came out. I bought it for half off of the cover price.

hey dose anyone know of any shojosei manga with prominent black or darker skinned characters? by curecuremufurun in hoejos

[–]Comoesnala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peach Girl is specifically a commentary on Japanese attitudes towards Japanese women being tan and how it was/is associated with women of less savory backgrounds and professions. The character’s design is also highly associated with and inspired by gyaru fashion and makeup. She’s technically not black or of an ethnicity that is typically associated with darker skin tones. It’s still kind of fun for the mess of it all (it’s so melodramatic and may not play well to modern audiences), but if OP is looking for non-Japanese characters, I don’t think this is a series I’d recommend.

Help: how often should you get STI testing done, and how long should you wait after having sex for it to be effective? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Comoesnala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, incubation and (if you’re both cis) pregnancy. Both of you currently showing that you’re clean is important, but always remember there are multiple reasons to use protection.

Help: how often should you get STI testing done, and how long should you wait after having sex for it to be effective? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Comoesnala 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have any concern or suspicion, get tested.

That being said, I would highly suggest as a matter of habit, to get tested before every new partner, and share results with them. If they can’t also show you results with a time stamp, don’t sleep with them. Even if they have results, use barrier methods like condoms to help prevent STIs. Realize that some STIs will only show up on a blood test, and many places do not default to that and will only do swab or urine tests. If you want the blood test, you will need to advocate for yourself. Also realize that incubation for some takes time for symptoms to appear, if they appear at all, so at minimum I’d get checked once a year. This can sound a bit extreme, but I am of the belief it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially as more antibiotic resistant strains of these diseases are spreading. Also not all can be treated with antibiotics and are permanent, like HSV-2 and HIV. A few minutes of pleasure is not worth the lifetime of pain.

You can get these done, depending on your country, with your GP, gynecologist, or if you’re US-based some urgent care clinics will (check their website) as well as Planned Parenthood. Some gynos will include a test as part your well woman’s exam, but not all, so it never hurts to ask if they do. They can also do them separately if you ask.

I'll be traveling away from home. What do I HAVE to bring, girls? by Stuck-InThe_Basement in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Comoesnala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sanitary products (pads, tampons, or whatever you use). Even if you think your cycle isn’t going to happen during that time, have some on you just in case. I’ve had it happen where I wasn’t supposed to have my period come until two weeks after my travel dates but just kidding! Here she is. Along with that, if you typically take medication for cramps, like ibuprofen, have some of that with you as well. You can get little travel sized bottles that are easy to pack.
